A Scottish mother of three out celebrating her birthday has been run down and killed in an apparent road-rage incident in Dubai.
Kate Wood, 52, from Inverness, was standing on the pavement with her husband when a Hummer 4x4 sports utility vehicle knocked her down before reversing and driving over her again. The driver, who fled the scene, was traced by the police and has been charged with murder. The man, reported to be a young local, may face the death penalty.
Jeff Wood, the dead woman's husband, spoke at the weekend of his horror after the incident ten days ago on Airport Road, a three-lane highway. Mr Wood, 54, who escaped serious injury after the car ploughed into their group, said that he had been married to his wife for 33 “precious years”.
He said: “It is such a waste of a lovely woman's life. Kate was only a little woman and didn't stand a chance.”
The couple had been out with their friends Danielle and Brendan Hunter on May 29 and had enjoyed a meal before taking a taxi to a nightspot.
Mr Wood said: “The taxi driver pulled up on the left and Brendan, myself and Kate got out and were waiting on the pavement while Danielle was paying the taxi driver. I heard Brendan shout something like ‘watch out' and the Hummer sent me flying about 6ft. Brendan was knocked against the fence but the Hummer went right over Kate. Then, to my disbelief, the driver reversed and went forward over her again.”
Mrs Wood suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital but she was declared dead on arrival.
The Gulf News, a newspaper based in Dubai, said: “At the moment the charge is premeditated murder. If guilty of such a charge, the sentence could be a long time in jail or, in some cases, death.”
It claimed that a witness told police that the Hummer driver had become angry after the taxi driver braked in front of him several times.
Mrs Wood's funeral will be held in Scotland tomorrow.

I feel very sorry at such a death of the lady. But we can't and should not say that it was done due to some discrimination. Strict road laws should be enforced and practised by all.And if they do not, there should be serious punishments. No one has any right to take life of any human being.
Musalmuna, Dubai,
Chris from Dubai-- are you joking? Don't pull moral superiority regarding cultural cohesiveness because you live in Dubai. Many of us, myself included, have lived and worked in the Muslim world for years. This has nothing to do with religion; this is anonymous road rage.
Ian, London,
I spent a month in Dubai Holidaying in various cities. One evening, whilst driving around Dubai we were pulled over to the side of the road for no reason, harrassed, questioned and treated with total disrespect, even spat at. When I complained, I was taken to the police station and threatened.
Niamh, Dalkey, Ireland
A truly terrible and tragic crime, but breathtaking ignorance is being displayed here. An 80% expat/20% local population can't function without religious tolerance. As for crime rates, I'd rather bring my kids up here than in my home country (UK). Try experiencing something before forming opinions.
Chris, Dubai, UAE
A poor woman has died, a family is distraught, a man has lost his life partner and some of you decide tthis is an opportunity to talk about religion and middle east? you are sad, ignorant and lonely people who obviously haven't travelled or been educated properly enough to have any decent manners
Golnaz , Dubai, UAE
My thoughts and sympathies to Mr Wood and the people who are mourning this tragic loss.
The reports of this crime are shocking but I really don't believe such an incident is any less likely happen in the US or UK. Infact, the UK news is filled with worse. Be sure, this man will be punished.
Jane, Expat in Dubai, Dubai, UAE
Thank you Victoria. I am also widely travelled, I live and work in the middle east and spend much of my professional time in Dubai. The comments made by Melissa, Sam and Clay are so absurd I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Please don't comment if you're merely going to display your ignorance
Mike, Manama, Bahrain
Dubai? Low crime rates? Ask Alexandre Robert, a French 15-year-old, who was raped by three Emerati men there. Rather than arrest the attackers, the authorities threatened Robert with criminal homosexual activity, and then hid the fact that one of his attackers was HIV positive. Great place.
RichB, Maidenhead, Berks
Probably the safest place in the world, but not for RTA's. They really like to drive fast and have a drink....not good.
Andy Cullen, Chelmsford,
Thankfully in Dubai the person who commited the crime will receive a proper tough punishment instead of the pathetic disgusting leniency that would be dished out here in England.
Vivek, London, UK
I was once in a Dubai taxi driven by a small, polite man from India, when he apparently upset two UAE nationals in a huge jeep. They forced my driver off the road, pulled him from the car and savagely beat him. When I protested they threatened me. They probably got away with it, as "nationals" do.
Michael Limb, London,
The ignorance being expressed in this comments section is frankly, staggering. As a widely travelled western expat born and brought up in Dubai I can knowledgably say it is the one of the most tolerant places in the world and relatively safe because of its zero tolerance attitude towards crime.
Victoria, Cambridge, UK
Perhaps this is being passed of as a road rage attack - because Dubai wishes to protect its tourist industry.
I have been looking at all those buildings going up over there & wondering if someone will be kidnapped.
A tolerant attitude towards other beliefs are a 2nd thought in that region.
Sam, London,
Dave in Dubai,
It is easy to use statistics. They are the devil's currency. Simple fact though is that some things considered crimes here in America and in Europe, simply are not crimes there. So, of course their crime rates are lower.
Melissa, Sacramento, CA/USA
To 'Clay' In Toronto.
I am a 'westerner' who lives in Dubai. Do you know anything about the UAE? It doesnt sound like you do.
Maybe before you dismiss a whole nation because of one incident you should compare crime statistics here with another major city in the world? Toronto maybe?
Dave, Dubai,
Yes, it was road rage, of course. It's not at all possible that this man could have been targeting the Woods and their group because they are westerners.
The United Arab Emirates was the only arab/muslim country that I would have gone too, but I won't set foot there now
Clay, toronto, canada
What can anyone say? Some "people" are incredibly cruel. How can anyone who is a complete human with a sound mind explain such cruelty? I hope the murderer gets the death penalty which he truly deserves. It's too bad that he can't be given at least ten death penalities.
