Charles and Laura Marks
The production manager Charles Marks, 51, will be in charge of the BBC unit at T in the Park this weekend. His daughter Laura, 22, a musician and presenter, will be one of the hosts of the show.

There was a mad thunderstorm when Laura was born. Six o’clock in the morning, ready to take the world by storm, that was my wee girl. I’d been working as a tour manager, looking after people like Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, BB King and Nina Simone, but had also started my first job for the BBC on Rab C Nesbitt. So I was a busy guy, but I don’t remember it keeping me from my children. In fact, because a lot of my work was in the evenings, I spent quality time with Mark and Laura.
Laura’s always been an entertaining child, never shy. But she’s not one of these people who shows off all the time.
When she was nine, Laura started going to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on Saturdays. Next thing we knew, she came home with a crumpled piece of paper in her pocket.
“What’s this, Laura?”
“Oh, a week ago I had to do some singing for some people and that’s the letter,” she said. It turned out she had been chosen to play a main part with Scottish
Opera. She did seven shows with them. I cried every night and I still do when I see her perform.
Two years ago she was on the main stage at T in the Park with the band she plays with, El Presidente. I couldn’t help but nudge folk and say: “That’s my wee girl up there.”
Despite my job I didn’t have any idea she was auditioning for the presenting role at T in the Park. Nothing’s changed — the first I find out about a new job for Laura is when I see her on the television or catch her on stage.
It’s a different side of things I deal with, making sure the equipment is there, health and safety being adhered to, even the loos being in good working order. We will be lucky if we bump into each other in the canteen at T in the Park, we’ll be working so hard. I’m so proud of both my children, but they’re easy to be proud of.

What can I tell you about my dad other than he’s great? I think he’s the reason I got into television and the arts. I liked to sing and dance as a kid and the next thing I knew my dad said: “Why don’t you go on the Singing Kettle?”
I knew I’d found what I loved doing and I knew I’d have every encouragement. Whether it was Scottish Opera or doing Barmy Aunt Boomerang for two years with Toyah Willcox, he was right behind me.
Despite the fact we’re in the same business, he’s never pushed for me to get work. He’s very supportive, but I think he’d refuse to help me even if I asked. So I never have. Dad’s a great believer in working your way up. Growing up in Castlemilk, it was his ambition to live in one of the places where the red buses go, and that’s what he got through sheer effort.
My mum thinks we’re both crazy. She’s a pharmacist, so she thinks television is just a presenter and a camera. It is nice to talk to my dad about the ins and outs. It’s a precarious job, presenting, but I don’t think he’d have tried to dissuade me. Now he’s getting “You’re Laura’s dad?”, whereas for years I got “You’re Charles’s daughter?”. He pretends not to like it, but I know he’s thrilled.
