Police leaders have warned that a new website allowing the public to criticise the service could be hijacked by troublemakers.
The website, mypolice.org, won best idea at a social innovation camp held in Glasgow last week, an event funded by the Scottish government and National Lottery.
It aims to improve the service offered by Scotland’s eight police forces by allowing victims of crime to post feedback on the way their cases are handled.
The site, modelled on Patient Opinion, which encourages online criticism of the NHS, will allow people to suggest areas for improvement or to offer praise.
However, officers have expressed concern that the site will be hijacked by disgruntled members of the public to make unfounded criticism.
Sarah Drummond, 22, a Glasgow School of Art graduate, came up with the idea after a friend, whose flat was burgled, complained about the way the case was handled by the police and the lack of feedback.
“I am passionate about Britain’s public services so I thought why don’t we do something that gives feedback to the police?” said Drummond.
However, Calum Steele, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, said he feared the website would be counterproductive.
“The police service already have ways for the public to express dissatisfaction. Whether this site is allowed to flourish or is hijacked by people with anti-police feeling remains to be seen,” he said.
Drummond and her design team will meet the police in the coming weeks to discuss how they can use and interact with the site. One idea is that all complaints and comments are tagged geographically to help identify crime hotspots.
