The threatened closure of the Diageo bottling plant is a body blow for Kilmarnock, and a serious setback for an area struggling with unemployment.
That does not justify some of the more hysterical reactions of politicians and councillors as they wade in to attack the company's decision and warn of the potential disaster it foreshadows. Demanding that Diageo reverses its decision, on the grounds that it could destroy the Scotch whisky industry, is empty posturing. We are no longer living in the Eighties and rerunning the Battle of Ravenscraig.
Diageo's reasons for wanting to expand elsewhere may be unpalatable, but they are understandable - and by no means unique. Companies the world over are rationalising their production lines, and looking closely at traditionally-run plants.
The more mature approach is, first, to be ahead of the game in understanding the industry and its needs. Second, to have on hand plans that are at least a viable alternative for a company looking to out-source its production. And finally, to take a professional approach to the issue rather than playing to the gallery.
Scottish Enterprise is now examining the figures, but it is late on the case. Diageo has made it clear that it is not interested in moving its bottling operation outside the country. But pressure to find a cheaper option may grow if the downturn continues.
The Scotch whisky industry needs wisdom and maturity in working out a strategy to protect it - not the kneejerk reactions of politicians in search of votes, or ministers who prefer a TV studio to discussion in the boardroom
