Armando Ianucci’s political satire In The Loop was the big winner at the Bafta Scotland Awards, presented last night at the Glasgow Science Centre.
The film won Ianucci the directing prize, and the writing prize for his work in a team that also included Jesse Armstrong and Simon Blackwell. Peter Capaldi won the Bafta for Best Acting Performance in a Film.
Robert Carlyle was awarded Best Acting Performance in Television by a Man for Channel 4’s The Unloved. Nardini won the female prize for Acting Performance in Television, for her role in the BBC Four murder mystery New Town, which also won the Best Entertainment Programme award.
In the Loop was created by the team behind the highly acclaimed BBC television satire The Thick of It — the second series of which is now being broadcast. Capaldi plays the spectacular monster of spin Malcolm Tucker in both the TV and the cinema versions. When the film was released, in April, The Times said that it “fizzes like concentrated sulphuric acid”.
The comic revenge thriller Crying with Laughter won the award for Best Feature Film.
Bill Forsyth, the director of Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero, was given a special award for Outstanding Contribution to Film and Sir Jeremy Isaacs was honoured for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting. David Jones won Outstanding International Achievement in Digital Media, and Patrick Doyle won the Robert McCann Prize for Craft.
Helen Anderson, of Bafta Scotland, said that the ceremony demonstrated the country’s breadth of talent: “I hope tonight’s awards have inspired the winners, nominees and indeed new talent to continue making excellent work.”
