Torrential rain swept across Britain yesterday bringing flooding, tornados and death on the wettest June day on record.
A 28-year-old man died trying to unblock a drain in Hull despite the efforts of emergency services. In Sheffield, a 13-year-old boy who was swept into a swollen river near a playground was feared dead and a 68-year-old man died while attempting to cross a flooded road.
Hundreds of shoppers and office workers were last night stranded by rising waters in the Meadow Hall area of Sheffield as rescue helicopters were airlifting to safety those in most need. One of those trapped described cars floating down the road outside as floodwaters swelled by four feet in a matter of minutes.
In Humberside, hundreds of motorists were marooned on the main route into Hull as floodwater and stranded cars blocked the A63 into the city. Motorists and lorry drivers were standing in the road and sitting on their vehicles in the five-mile tailback in the South Cave area.
A spokesman for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said that the day had “possibly been the busiest 12 hours in the history of the service”. He said that the service dealt with more than 1,500 calls.
Elsewhere, hundreds of homes and businesses were flooded, schools evacuated and cars swept away as more rain fell in 24 hours across Britain than usually falls in the entire month of June. Tens of thousands of homes are this morning without power.
Four tornados were also reported, in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire; Treeton, South Yorkshire; Cranwell, Bedfordshire; and Telford, Shropshire.
A further deluge is forecast to sweep across the country from the South West at the end of the week.

South Texas summer weather has been dominated by an unusual summer monsoon (first I have seen here in my life). This weather pattern typically dominates Southwestern U. S.. Normally South Texas is dominated by a High Pressure area that helps to feed the Southwesten U. S. summer monsoon in Arizona, New Mexico with moisture from the Gulf.
Will this trend toward Global Warming bring about a shift in locations for High and Low Pressure Cells?
Stephen, San Antonio, U.S.A./ Texas
Too much water in England and forest fires in America. Melting ice caps in the North and snow in South Africa. We are changing the climate for the worse but all that we've done in the past 50 years are nothing compared to a serious volcanic eruption, earthquake, tsunami; we have to put things in perspective. We are polluting the air and the water which we need to survive on earth and that's very serious.
Serge Garand, Ottawa, Canada
I am amazed by the naivety of most of the comments here. Those of us who believe in human induced global warming are in a huge majority - because it is demonstrably true. Those who deny it do so not from true belief, but as a mere excuse to continue driving their Range Rovers without guilt.
A single drought or flood is no proof of climate change: agreed. But the expected course of climate change is and increase in extreme weather. That is happening.
Also, it is true that bigger climatic changes have happened than this in the past - but NEVER in the course of a single human generation. It is scary. The world is changing, and whether or not we survive it, many species certainly will not. As the only species on the planet to have a negative impact on the planet, can we view our survival over that of other creatures a success story for life on Earth?
Alex Elliott, Reykjavik, Iceland
Hi ya'll,
We Texans know a bit about weather change... that is... it always changes. Six years of drought and high heat, then a few years of storms with 12" rain in 12 hours... We like our changing weather, it makes life challenging and give us plenty to laugh and joke about. Please Al, don't mess with Texas!
Hey, we have more jokes of Al,s invention than mesquite in the fields. The only support he'll get from Texas is those who've recently moved here from the West and East Coast. They are just a tinkling sound, nothing to get excited about, for in ten years they'll forget all about such foolishness - then they're TEXANS.
Incidently, there are thousands of small graveyards here in Texas - the resting places of weather victims young and old.

It amazes me the sheer volume of known scientific evidence for global warming and climate change that is rejected by denialists because of their political beliefs.
Many people actually believe in supernatural beings and have little faith in physical evidence.
Ignorance is indeed widespread.
Victor, rochester, usa
Yah, it is Bush's fault. Everything is Bush's fault. Not my fault, no way. The fact I can't get the water out of my ear is his fault, too. And the fact the rain fell and put out the fires in GA and FL is his fault. Its all his fault.
Let Hillary fix it. Yah, just ignore the problems and they will go away until the next GW is president then we can blame the next GW, too.
Al Gore, my hero, where art thou?
Johnny Cleg, Florida, USA
Actually, frozen water takes up the same volume as liquid water; a glass with ice will have the same level when the ice melts.
Ice at the North pole would not raise water levels if it melted since it is already floating. However, ice on Antaartica or Greenland is another matter since it rests on land.
Having said that, most of the land under the Greenland ice is below sea level (having been compacted by the ice over time) so the impact on ocean levels would be somewhat reduced if the ice there were to melt.

You don't need to be a scientist to admit that the earth is being plundered of its natural resources as never before, or polluted in diverse ways, that the gas emissions are dramatically high, specially in highly developed countries, that forests are disappearing, and consummerism is putting OUR PLANET (which belongs not to some but to all humanity and the future generations) in danger, so instead of adopting a patronizing and ironic attitude we should all reconsider our habits and what each of us can do to help, instead of adopting a totally selfish position.

"Where is the global warming with all this rain? "
Are you sure you're a professor? Global warming doesn't cause high temperatures, it causes freak weather.
starling, Lancaster,
whilst I have no doubt climate change is occurring, it is nonsense to think it is 'all our fault'...ice ages and other weather phenomena have ALWAYS occurred in the life of the earth..just accept it is happening and also the fact that all governments, especially ours are going to use it as an excuse for higher/more taxation.
Carbon emissions are only a part of the problem..try reducing all the other pollution that many industries produce first, before telling us we can't use our cars to get to work, or have a holiday abroad as a reward for our labours...even better tell politicians they can't have a holiday abroad and see what their response is!!
David, Cambridgeshire,
i think that more should be done to prevent situations like this, im 19 now and have been studying public services for two years, maybe the large amount of money that goes towards the UN,EU etc some of that should be actually benefiting our country, the weather conditions here were scary, it was a look into the future.
the North has to stick together and rebuild most of its communities, as for tony blair (no longer priminister) good riddens he or anyone else down there have helped with this tragedy.
also not to forget, i was in swinton a less affected area and my boyfriend was in more or less the centre of rotherham near parkgate, the worry enflicted on me from this was also emotionally upsetting.

I remember as a kid (I'm now in my 40's) that the sun was always in the southern portion of the sky, but now it seems to be almost vertical at mid-day. Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder how much effect this would have on global warming.
J. S., Spokane, Washington USA
I have been taking care of the planet in my little way since 1965 when Billy Graham used to preach on the radio and say that in 8 years there would be such a great famine we would all be starving. I just had my first child and it gave me the terrors for years and I still remember it. But having been brought up on a very limited budget (a very happy one) and suffered a similar shortage in my early years of marriage, I see waste of any kind as unacceptable. Having said that I live near some open land which appeared to be listed as flood plain, no longer, and a housing estate has been built on part of it. I think the excessive building on green belt land could be part of the flooding problem.
I am totally in favour of anything done to protect this planet but It is also interesting to note that about fifteen years ago, they said we were going to enter another ice age and I was worried that I still wouldn't have central heating!
Christine, Hayes, Middlesex, England
It's all Bush's fault. Drought, rains, snow lack of snow, the decline of Islam, the rise of Islam, pollution in China, beaching of whales, lack of other habitable planets, the presence of other planets, the poor showing of U2, Kylie Minogue's cancer, the worst economy in America's history, the best in our history. I mean really, how much more lame could Bush's critics be.

How can people deny climate change?
The very fact that an aircraft takes off every second and another one lands in the next surely depicts the grand scale of the amount of pollution we are creating?
Or if you still fail to believe that aircraft are a major cause - I'll come round your house, and pump 50 years of jet engine exhaust fumes into your lungs - and let you tell me that you feel like going for a run as you are so unaffected by the process.
Jack Frost, shropshire,
Yes And the Big climiate change some 45000 years ago when the Ice cap that covered all of the alps, northern Germany, Scandanavia, and the entire British Isles melted. This was Jorge Bushes falt also! Cave men had to many industries, drove cars too much. there had to be billions of them to cause so much global warming. Now totally discount the amount of
Polutants put out by Volcanos, changes in the sun's enegery output, and that the CO2 rise came after the tempature rise by 20 to 30 years.
Robert Jewett, Woodbridge , Virginia/ USA
New houses constantly being built on flood plains in the uk isn't helping. Flooding in our village is getting to be a regular occurance but so is building close to the winterbourne, currently three houses are proposed where formally there was only one. People are greedy to make as much money as possible out of any bit of land that can be built on with very little consideration of the effects on the environment. When parish councillors raise concerns they risk having legal action threatened against them.
Mrs Richardson, Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire
USA writers, considering the fact that you are one of the biggest polluters i can see the fact why you try to sweet talk the whole situation, maybe you should calm down on your fuel then we'll talk. we have already start to make changes, but because you and your country are so proud you wont maybee someone should bring u down a peg or two.
Big heads!!!!

You people think record extremes of weather and highly irregular patterns are normal? Talk about head in the sand!
Eric Eagle, London, UK
Now, every incidence of unusual weather will be attributed to Global Warming....or better said, Global Whining. I've seen these fanciful maps depicting most of Florida's coast underwater as a result of melting glaciers. If this is true, and if it's just simply a matter or time as the Great Oracle Gore says, then homeowners in Hillsboro Beach should be thrilled to sell their soon to be underwater mansions for a song. Right?
Rafael, Miami, FL
Global warrming; drought; disaster for all. What's this all about? Surely whatever happens in this world climatically must be through natural causes and it's nothing new. For violent weather changes such as we are seeing in the north of England to be the result of mans actions is quite beyond belief. Unless of course, you want to ride on the back of it in order to collect additional spurious taxes.
Paul Savage, Lambourn, UK
I think it is all George Bushs' fault.
B. Lightbody, Chula Vista, USA, California
The tragedy of people being injured or killed by any weather event is always very regrettable, but one day of very heavy rain is hardly a harbinger of anything, except that lawns will grow better than normal for a few days. As for climate change, we could use a little more warming here in Maine!
JT, Bangor, Maine
It has to be Cheney who's doing this! And Tony Blair! And the new Iraqi government! No other explanation!
Actually, I agree will an earlier poster who stated it's the recent run-away and rabid news media once again instilling fear and fabricating news/disaster. I've been around for 53 years (many places in the world) and I don't see anything unusual anywhere.
Patrick, Williamsburg, Virginia

It's a little bit of rain... last year it was Loch Lomond that got flooded and a two years ago that it was Carlisle. I remember Poole in Dorset being flooded in the '80's. There has been flooding in the UK since "records began". No big deal. Just buy a place where it don't flood.
dachaidh, rhu, scotland
The last hurricane we had two years ago the rainfall was over 8 inches. No flooding for me. Only low lying areas were flooded. The average thunder storm has over two inches of rain. These people must live in a desert to have 2 inches flood.
STEPHEN, FORT LAUDERDALE, USA/FLORIDA
Over here, most of us don't blame everything on President Bush or anyone else. Over here, most of us are intellectually honest enough to admit that the world existed long before humans, climate change, warming and cooling were and are extant despite the presence of humankind. Global warming however is a fad money-maker for grant seekers and hucksters trading carbon credits.

JOCK, MACCLESFIELD,
Not to make light of the plight of those in England who suffered loss in these storms, but there are other parts of the world - also in temperate climates - where this kind of stuff happens all year long. Here in northeast Texas, we recently lost people to flooding. We also have tornadoes - all the time - and hailstones the size of tangerines and larger, and on and on and on. When it passes, we talk about it, and then go on about our business. Life goes on. Weather happens. In fact, here in Texas, if you don't like the weather, just wait 20 minutes.
AnnoyedMan, Grapevine, Texas, USA
What? No one is blaming Global Warming, George Bush, or Tony Blair? This truly is a miracle.
Good luck to all across the pond.
Jon, Houston, TX. / USA
Global warming will cause unpredictable weather. Even if we get ice sheets a mile thick like we had several thousand years ago, you must understand it is the fault of human-induced global warming. Please, the science is settled on this.
Ric Heard, Dove Canyon, USA California
Best wishes to those in England and condolences to those who've lost loved ones. You are in our prayers.
Over here, we blame EVERYTHING on Bush.
Linda Hansen, Palm Coast, FL, USA
Noone is blaming this freak weather on global warming in this article but it sure is a relief to see so many Americans commenting on the subject. There may still be hope for us all if their awareness reaches the majority population of "God's own country".
On the other hand, let's all forget about our impact on the Earth's future and George Bush, since we are all powerless to influence policies anyway. If we all don't abuse it NOW, then surely someone else will. And rather us than the Russians, right? We all need big SUVs to fetch a Starbucks and get a bigger house than our neighbours so we'll have even more useless space to aircondition. All while we drive up the fossil fuel commodity prices and leave the developing world to pay the price of our greedy and expanding consumerism.
Hope the weather will stay dry for the cleanup work to be quick and good luck to you all up North.

The earth goes through cycles people. If we (or Bush) is causing this, explain the crazy weather over 100 years ago, including glacier melting. You can't. This global warming crap is all politcal and a way for these nut groups to keep the money flowing in. Some of you are so naive.
James Culpeper, Boston, MA
Not to be mean or anything, but I find it strange that people think that the polar caps melting would cause the ocean levels to rise uncontrollably. I mean, most of that ice is underwater right? So, since water EXPANDS when it freezes, that would mean that the water level would drop when all that ice returned to its un-expanded, room-temperature form. So, if the water levels are rising, then that means that there is more water coming down from the atmosphere or more ice is being formed in the world's oceans.
Dan, Billings, MT
By the way, you know what really annoys me? That the comments of a British newspaper are always overrun by people from the US, usually with big, arrogant mouths. And you wonder why so many people are anti-american. I KNOW there are plenty of nice US citizens, but you lot are not helping to change your reputation.
starling, Lancaster,
This wouldn't have happened if Al Gore were President. He would have found some way to make carbon credits steer the storm back out to see. Kind of nice, though, that we can read these stories on the Internet that he invented with Bill Clinton.

Kojiro Vance, London,
well - the possible 'climate change'/'global warming' angle certainly brings out the cranks!
And to those bemoning the lack of rain measurements in inches (its an EU plot!) the local and national media have ALL reported how much rain fell in both imperial and metric measurements (4 inches in the worst affected areas - twice the monthly average for June in 24 hours!).
With 2 major cities all but cut off (physically) the blame game that has started is quite irrelevant until the situation on the ground is rectified, then please feel free to blame the whoever you want, the local council, NuLabour, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, Bush, Climate Change, God and the 3 degrees!

Could some man-made climate change deniers riddle me this? Why would people claim that climate change is man-made? For fun? It's hardly convenient, is it? I can only see reasons to DENY man-made climate change (profit, laziness, convenience), not to confirm it (unless all these people have shares in windmill farms).
starling, Lancaster,
This wouldn't have happened if Al Gore were President. He would have figured out a way to use carbon credits to make the storm stay out to sea. At least we have the benefit of reading the story on the Internet he and Bill Clinton invented.
Cable Guy, Colebrook, NH
Whether or not weather events such as those taking place in the UK are related to proposed human related Global Warming is debatable. I would agreee that blaming everything on Global Warming seems a little ridiculous. However, posting comments critizing those less educated on the topic but interested in learning is also ridiculous.
You can blame President Bush and his administration for thwarting efforts of many organized Americans to reduce emissions and protect the environment. Even if human induced Global Warming is a farce, is it not wise to protect what we have and improve the environment regardless? I think it is unfortunate that we as a race have to be pushed by a changing climate and degrading ecosystem into realizing that by protecting the environment and placing an emphasis on sustainability we are protecting ourselves and future generations.

They say George Bush was seen blowing up the levees here in New Orleans during Katrina because he hates the shwarzens, and the only reason Cheney wasn't out there was because of his heart condition. I did not see this with my own eyes but it certainly sounds plausible, I mean they did blow up the WTC on 9/11, so they certainly could have pulled off the levee destruction. If I were you Brits I would be looking at the street video tapes taken the day of the flood to see if a guy who looks like a chimp is skulking around causing mayhem.

Last weekend we had as much as 6" to 8.5" of rain fall in about a three hour period in the suburbs of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. We had a lot of high water, but that is to be expected. This year we are having a much cooler & wetter year than 2006. The only constant in weather is change - both short term and long term. I get very tired of the HYSTERIA that is put out on the latest "crisis". Any crisis, whether it is "Global Warming", "Shark Attacks", "Wildfire", "West Nile Virus", " Tornado", "Lyme Diseae", "Stingray Attacks", "Asteroid Impact ", etc... are spelled by most media the same way: PANIC!!!
Tom Boley, Coweta, USA / Oklahoma
Global warming is nonsense; it is the result of big-government liberals who want to find new ways to tax the people who do real work for a living. Most weather records in the US and UK only go back 100-150 years, so the claim that the 'weather in the last 100 years has been quite extreme' is just an unfounded statement. We've had wetter and colder than normal year in Texas, but in the view of scientifically-illiterate liberals that is proof of global warming.
J Meeks, Fort Worth, Texas, USA

It's funny how people with no training whatsoever in a science as highly sophisticated and challenging as most others believe they can understand the climate and climatology of this planet. The past 100 years have been highly unique in the relatively calm weather patterns. Today we are seeing changes that are more natural than those previous patterns. Please, if you think you can do heart surgery without an education and lots of experience do not think you are qualified to exercise an opinion that you have only optained through another's political, not scientific, purposes. Relax. The sky is not falling.
John , Warren, RI, USA
One more(and real)culprit: The hardworking, economically struggling , average American white male.Everyone here is telling us that we are stupid, and that we are causing Earth's warming. Now THIS in your country--I can hardly take it anymore, because I love England.

I just returned from Scotland, and it was already beginning to rain heavily. Clearly, George Bush and Tony Blair, are up to secret experiments and causing all of this. I do like the NZ sheep thing though, it can be my "enabler conspiracy" for everything now.
Victor, Dallas, Texas, USA
I do agree and I don't agree. With the world going through a change it has nothing to do with global warming, but instead the moon is moving further and further away from the planet earth. It is moving 3.8 centimeters per year; considering year after year it's been drifting further away from earth, has an effect on how our planet behaves in regards to rain and drought. I beleive this is the answer you've all been looking for. Has nothing to do with our oil, gas or coal we burn. With that said, 3.8 centimeters per year x 50 years is 6.23 feet.
Darren, Kingsdown, UK
How much rain fell, how many inches, wait, we're not allowed to tell you that. The EU forbids us to inform you about this in english, sorry about that.
We are told in gobbledegook and weirdo and you have to then translate it into english and let us know. Its all to do with milli something but none of it makes sense.
We suspect though that somewhere along the line global warming will be cited as the cause and as usual the usa will get the blame for it. You can almost write the headlines now.

This may well be caused by worldwide climate change; but, having said that, why the hysteria? As one climatologist commented several days ago, {paraphrase} 'climate on earth has always changed, and who is to say that the current weather pattern is the optimum, or even the preferred, one'. The upheavals that changing weather will cause will be uncomfortable, but we, as a species, will adapt and survive.

climate change? of course! but the earth's climate has never been static!!
Stop the Global Warming Hysteria!!
John, Briton,
During a warm april the BBC and others were confidently predicting a hot summer and drought conditions for Britain during the summer. May and June have proved very cold and wet and yet GEVE sees this as proof of climate change too. Is any weather anywhere in the world of any kind 'proof' of climate change? If it's dry and hot its a disaster, and if it's cold and wet it's a disaster? This sounds like an hypothesis which is not disprovable, and therefore not science at all. Strangely the webcam which the BBC were trumpeting in Kew Gardens which would record the coming drought is not being publicised now. Perhaps it's been swept away.
In Australia two years ago environmental writer Tim Flannery predicted that Sydney would run out of domestic water this month. As it is constant heavy rain and cold weather here have boosted dam levels to levels not seen for years. I'm sure this is proof of climate change too, right?
nick mallory, sydney, australia
ITS NOTHING TO DO WITH CLIMATE CHANGE!!!
Its so frustrating that everyone seems to be an expert on the worlds weather all of a sudden. Once upon a time it was a national joke that the British always commented on the weather - now everyone seems to be an expert. The thing about weather is its only news worthy when its extreme and there will always be extreme weather somewhere on earth the equilibrium absoloutely relies on extremes...problem is now there is a bandwagon to jump on when extereme weather hits - tornados in the US its climate change, monsoons in the UK its climate change, no snow in the alps its climate change
NO ITS NOT NO ITS NOT NO ITS NOT
it is just simply the moving average of the worlds weather, there has been worse, tornadoes, droughts, monsoons, snow, lack of snow...even drizzle - 100, 200, 300 years ago. Its just now we have a ravenous world news network, ignorant viewers and politically motivated spin doctors.
ITS NOT CLIMATE CHANGE!!!

It's George Bush's fault, like everything else. Some in my country think George Bush can cause hurricanes and stop climate change! And of course, George couldn't do all these things without Tony's help.
Jerry Robb, Atlanta, GA
Which lighthouse is pictured? What, no Global Warming? Isn't that the beauty of weather? It varies. Dr. Zecchino's forecast for UK & North American entity: warm the next three months or so. Late August, early September, temps will cool. How odd that the chimera known as Global Warming remains powerless Autumn's cooling? Shocking.
Dr. Paul Vincent Zecchino, Englewood, USA/FL
I haven't really got an opinion just wanted someone from England to make a comment and my comment is that by the usual standards of British weather yesterday was very unusual and because it was unusual it was very scary to those caught up in it.

Evidently, the Master of the Universe is expressing his displeasure with the surge in antisemitism in England.
ebbe, oob,me,
Sad to hear about the loss of life, may God have mercy on their souls and my condolences to the bereaved.

With out a doubt, this is caused by uncontrolled sheep shearing in NZ. When will they learn? What about the rest of us? So selfish!
Yvonne, Paris, Fr.
It has nothing to do with "climate change" . it's not even particulaly unusual June weather if you examine long term records
Marshall Askew, Moraira, Spain
Wettest June day on record? This story fails to tell how many inches fell.
Gunner, Los Angeles , USA/CA
Well, now I know where all of our rain has gone--it's gone to England by gosh.
Please send some of it back to us in the USA before the whole country burns
and turns into a vast dust bowl. Our lawns have turned brown and the crops
have wilted, including my orchard which will have no crop again this year.
Dan O'Connor, West Harrison, Indiana, USA
what climate change?
Matt Drudge, Miami Beach, Florida
And how much rain was there?
mike, winnetka, ca. usa
What? No one is blaming this deluge on Global Warming? A miracle.
Best wishes to all my good friends in England. I love the place. So sorry to hear of the tragic losses of life. God speed.
Mark Stoddard, Spanish Fork, UTAH, USA
This is all on account of Climate Change. I cant imagine what it would be like if this change accelerates.
