Scores of residents were killed over the weekend and hundreds more trapped in their homes as the worst fighting in 15 years battered the ruined Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Allied Ethiopian and Somali government troops fired tank and mortar rounds into heavily populated areas for the fourth day running, in an attempt to flush out insurgents backed by remnants of Islamists driven from power in December.
The International Committee of the Red Cross expressed deep concern for thousands of civilians trapped by the fighting which it said was the worst seen since the early 1990s when militias fought with US special forces hunting wanted Somali warlords.
An outraged Somali working for the United Nations accused the Ethiopians, who have used tanks and helicopter gunships to pound rebel positions, of committing “war crimes”.
“They are firing heavy artillery into residential areas . . . innocent people who have nothing to do with these insurgents, let alone Islamists, are being slaughtered. Where are all those human rights groups who go on about Mugabe now; this is ethnic cleansing dressed up as a war on terror,” he told The Times.
Estimates of the number of people killed vary widely. Some now put the death toll as high as 150, but with most of the Indian Ocean port city a “no-go” area it is impossible to verify. Hospitals across the city are overflowing with wounded. Residents say that they represent only a fraction of the casualties.
Some of the heaviest fighting has taken place in the Ali Kamin neighbourhood, a rabbit warren of narrow alleyways, and the area around the main stadium in south Mogadishu, for years a stronghold of Somali gunmen.
Witnesses said yesterday that they saw at least six bodies of civilians lying in the street, unable to be retrieved by relatives because of heavy crossfire.
“There are tanks everywhere. Shells are landing everywhere and this is very scary,” Hussein Ali, a resident said. “I cannot confirm the exact casualties, but a lot of people have been killed and others wounded.”
Witnesses also reported the charred bodies of Ethiopian soldiers, near a burnt out army truck, and said that tanks had taken up position on main crossroads. All access to the areas of the heaviest fighting have been prevented by road-blocks manned by a joint force of Ethiopian and Somali government forces.
In another ominous development, a Ugandan peacekeeper – part of an African Union (AU) force supposed to maintain order after an Ethiopian Army pull-out – was killed on Saturday and five others wounded after mortars fired by the insurgents slammed into their base at the Presidential Palace. “We are not surprised by what took place, we expect those people [insurgents] to do more of such things. We are not in any fear at all,” Major Fe-lix Kulayigye told journalists in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
Regional experts, however, said that the AU force, which controls the airport from where the Ethiopians had launched helicopter raids against suspected insurgent positions, was no longer seen as a neutral force.
The US, which has supported the Ethiopian incursion, says that the Islamists have links to al-Qaeda. Somali experts say there are some links, but the imposition of a President from the Darod clan of southern Somalia has united rivals in the Hawiye sub-clans of central Somalia against a common foe.
“This is clan-based civil war now, the Islamists are fighting on the side of some of the Mogadishu clans but they are not leading this insurgency. It is very dangerous for the AU forces,” said a Somali expert. He cannot be identified for fear of reprisals in neighbouring Kenya to where many Somalis have fled.
The Ethiopians drove the Islamists from power in December, ending the only period of calm the city has seen since 1991, when Mohammed Siad Barre, the former Cold War dictator, was overthrown.

What happening in Somalia is a clear violation of all international norms, UN charter, and Security Council resolution 1725. The only difference is that US, UN, AU, EC, Arab and most of the international community are so silent which encouraged Ethiopia troops to commit these atrocities. The international contact grouped for Somalia is partly responsible the current crisis in Somalia. The contact group supported the imposition of the TFG and the invasion of Ethiopian troops in Somalia.

It is unbelievable that the so-called "international community" has allowed a mass murderer, a war lord, a killer of children, women and elderly to impose his murderous will on Somali people of Mogadishu. This killer and destroyer, the so-called "president", Abdillahi Ysuf, is busy right now, with his Etrhiopian and American supporters, shelling and destroying the Somali capital of Xamar, one of the most beutiful cities in Africa. This destruction of thousnads of years old city and its inhabitants by a rabid mass murderer and his criminal supporters from America and Europe will go down in Somali history as an act of horrible, horrible crime against Somali people. And we Somalis will rember this for a long time to come. Our enemies will never be forgoten.!!!!!
Is there a "international community" out there? Is anyone listening to the cries of babies and women who are being slaughterd by "a government" supported by Americans and Ethiopians?
Yusufg Nur, Toronto, Canada
Im from Somaliland and will not allow our government to be silent even though the opposition parties have spoken against the genocide committed against Hawiye Clan by the Tigrinya regime.
This war has nothing to do with war on terror or Islamist. Its a war led by Majerteen Warlord A. Yusuf who wants to commit crime agains humanity. He misled previous Ethiopian Government led by Mingisto but Mingisto didn't fall his trap and put him in Jail where he belongs unfortunately Meles Zenawi has other agenda but will fell. Times online should contact former president of Ethiopia Mingisto Haile Miriam to find out why TFG leader A. Yusuf was in jail in 80s. My humble opinion is dont trust this butcher if the world is ready to save humanity and put him where he belongs in Jail.

America yet again causing international problems based on their own agenda. The Islamic courts were working and providing peace in the country and seemed to have good out look regarding the west, they never had a chance to govern long enough to say one way or another. I can't see Sudan trusting the western countries anytime soon now.
Seamus, London,
Ethiopian troops and the militia of the transitional government committed war crime and crimes against humanity by purposefully targetting civilian neighbourhoods far from the fighting area. Furthermore, Ethiopian troops intentionally targetted and destroyed two medical centres in Mogadishu. Abdulahi Yusuf, warlord cum president told VOA Somali service that his troops and Ethiopian forces will target civilians. If that not a clear case of war crime, I do not know. What the international comuunity and all the human rights organisations need to do is to launch an investigation as to how to bring those crininals to justice. We have to remember also that there will never be any peace in Somalia without justice.
Mukhtar, london, UK
What is happening in Mogadishu, Somalia is a war crime committed against unarmed Somalis. The world should see this for what it is and ignore what Ethiopia and its puppets are saying.
Please visit this website and listen what the president of the Somalia TNG is saying. He is talking about his plans of how he wants to wipe out the Hawiya Clan. This is his authentic voice and any Somali would recognize. Please listen and spread the word. Thanks.

abdihakim, miltonkeyenes,
What is happening in my country is an act of genocide of mass killing civilians using war planes, artillery shelling, and all type of military equipments as define by article 2 of the convention of the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide as any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group," There are no terrorist in Somalia the only terror is the sound of the tank firing, continues shelling, and the war planes dropping bombs on children and elderly people, where is the UNITED NATION on this where is the world on this why arent they condemning and putting stop to this inhuman acts, this is causing continues severing and destruction of lives, Please write to your MPs or who ever you think can bring this to light so that you can end the mass killings of innocent civilians, Thank you and may god bring peace and happiness to all.

I am from Mogadishu and it is clear war crimes are being committed in my hometown. Abdullahi Yusuf, Ga'amadheere, Salad Ali Jeele and the Ethiopian leadership and military should remember what happened to good friends of the US who committed war crimes in support of US foreign policy such as General Pinochet of Chile. The US could not protect him when he was charged with Human rights violations in Europe and Chile. The so-called Transitional government in Somalia is a Vichy regime in Somalia.
Mohamed Hussein, Mogadishu, Somalia
The only time Somalia seemed to enjoy some relative order and peace over the last 15 years was when the Islamic Courts were in control. Instead of recognizing and supporting that progress the contempt of the US and Allies towards Islam has refuelled this current bloodshed [with the support of the so-called transitional government]. War on Terror?! War OF Terror more like! Very sad situation indeed.
Sue, Stamford Hill, London,
I am from somalia and I am part of Hawiye Clan. What many are claiming: that there is fighting between hawiye clan and Darod clan is totally baseless. Remind you, most of the minsters of the government are from diverse group of Hawiye clan. These members of hawiye clan, who are part of the government are supportive of the ongoing disarmament of Mogadishu people. If you need veryfication for this, you can contact with the Prime Minister: Ali Gedi, Deputy Minster of Defense: Salad Jelle, or The Minister of Interior: Ga'madhere. All these powerful positioned members of the Somali government are diverse members of the majority subclans of Hawiye clan, and these government minsters are supportive of the efforts to fight against the Radical ISlamic Courts recieving support from International terrorists.
So I would advise the international community to contact with the government officials for clarification and not listen to the sympathisers of Radicals, who are playing the clanish card.
Awo, fairfax, Virginia
So called "Christian" forces supported by the west should withdraw from Somalia and leave the Islamic people alone to choose their own form of government. The Ethopians are interfering in Somalia's internal affairs. Get them out of there.
