Al-Qaeda today appeared to have claimed responsibility for three deadly car bomb blasts targeting the Algerian Prime Minister and police, which killed at least 23 people and injured 160 others in the capital city Algiers.
The first explosion, at the six-storey city centre offices of the Prime Minister, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, shattered windows and showered rubble onto cars and surrounding buildings this morning, killing at least 12 and injuring 118 at 10.45am local time. A police source later told Reuters that a suicide bomber had caused the blast by driving his car into a guard post.
Shortly afterwards, two other near-simultaneous suicide car bombings took place outside a police station at Bab Ezzouar, in the capital's eastern outskirts near the airport, which killed 11 and injured 44 more, the country's civil defence department confirmed.
In a statement issued after the explosions, Mr Belkhadem – who was uninjured – called the attacks a "cowardly, criminal, terrorist act."
This afternoon, Al-Jazeera television reported that a caller who said he was al-Qaeda's branch leader in North Africa had claimed responsibility for the explosions.
The attacks represent a devastating setback for Algeria as the country attempts to close a violent chapter in its history, which saw 200,000 killed in an Islamic insurgency.
Violence recently started increasing in the aftermath of a decision by the country's main guerrilla group, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), to adopt a new name and deepen its ties to al Qaeda.
The north African group, now known as al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb – feared by France as its main terrorist threat – has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly bombings in Algeria targeting security forces and foreigners.
The attacks come a day after three suspected GSPC militants wanted in connection with the March 11 bombing of an internet café blew themselves up in Casablanca, Morocco – killing themselves and one policeman – as security forces closed in. A fourth militant, wearing an explosives belt, was shot dead by police as he wielded a sword.
Today, police were scouring the Moroccan capital for 10 possible suicide bombers.
In a statement, police said: "We are searching Casablanca for about 10 extremely dangerous terrorists, as they are ready like those yesterday to blow themselves up."
One Algerian member of the former-GSPC was Haydar Abu Doha – an associate of Osama bin Laden known in militant circles as "The Doctor". London-based Abu Doha was indicted in 2001 for masterminding the "millennium eve" plot to blow up Los Angeles LAX airport. He is in Britain, fighting extradition.
Algeria descended into near-anarchy in 1992 after the military-backed authorities scrapped a parliamentary election that an Islamist political party – not tied to the GSPC – was set to win. Up to 200,000 people died in the bloodshed that followed.
The killing has subsided in recent years following several amnesties for insurgents but rumbles on in mountains east of Algiers.

Dr Mohammad, thank you for being so forward thinking. I agree that it is hard to generalise on "Arabs" but I did the same earlier about Muslims but what I meant, as I imagine you did, was reference to extremest elements who don't have a similar value set to their adopted countries.
How can radical Islam be reformed when its followers are often too scared to stand up in public and be counted. How does one turn talk into action? I think things have got to get way worse yet before they get better. Congratulations tho Dr Mohammad. You would be welcome in my home and country any time.
Craig, Sydney, Australia
Dr. Mohammed - It's not "you Arabs". It's extremists that have perverted the faith and declared war on western culture. We are in the fight of our lives, but most in the US and Europe just go about their day, Starbucks in hand, blissfully ignorant of world affairs. As Einstein said, "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing about it."
Marco, Miami, USA
Being an American and seeing the reports every day of the bombings of innocent people simply to promote a radical ideology is astonishing. The sooner we all figure out that these radical islamists want nothing less than the entire destruction of anyone who doesn't agree with them, the sooner we can come together as a world force and stop this threat to world order.

This is a tragic event. Islamist terrorists shame Islam which is peace. By killing preemptively these fanatics lose the claim to be true Muslims since no true follower of Muhammed would do such a thing. We are dealing with something that is akin to Nazism and just as dangerous. When will Westerners, particularly left liberals, wake up and smell the semtex? It will unfortunately be necessary to target Muslims with anti-Terrorist measures, there is no other solution since the suicide murderer problem seems to be unique to Islam at the moment. Whatever happened to the great Islamic tradition of Ijtihad and kalam? Islam has produced some of the greatest thinkers eg Ibn Khaldun, Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali etc but these fanatics spew ignorance and hatred. Islam can reform but it must first cut out the Islamonazis who promote cultural genocide.

Dr Al-Jiziri, congratulations, how brave, but that shouldn't be the reaction. The reaction should be based on the argument.

The Religion, so called, that these people shelter behind, has nothing to do with any faith and those people who perpetrate such murder, whether in Northern Ireland or Algeria, also have nothing to do with religion. Their religion has only one end and that is Power. (Who are the British Government talking to now?). All religions advocate a peaceful existence. So by what right do these people claim to belong to any religious belief?
I personally have no religious belief in case you were wondering.

What a sad day for my country, We thought Algeria was getting better and better and was becoming a safe place to go to. But it doesnt look like it! While the extremistes win there will never be peace.
Shame on you whoever planned this attack and God Bless Algeria.
Islam is about Peace and Love and NO to hate and bombings.
A Mesbah, Nottingham/Algiers, UK/Algeria
ridiculous outbreaking spunt around the peaceful -should -be world , it is heartbreaking and totally unacceptable to see so much violence and insurgency continually
contagious terrorism penetrates in the delicate heart making us coward and timid , we are really grateful living in a temporarily peaceful and flourishing enviornment , whist the pressing responsibility warning us we should undertake the obligation , with more outstanding commitment
Hoping there would be someday we could share a world silent and peaceful , prosperous and harmonious leaving the next generation more beautiful dreams

Until Islam deals with Islamists I am afraid that none should be allowed in the West. Christianity had its evolution from darker days and has evolved into a stable and positive religion.
The solution has got to come from within Islam. Where are the true believers who can put this into perspective for muslims. I have only ever met muslims I have liked and so surely there is a disconnect between the man on the street and the terror we are seeing around the world. Who is going to stand up and speak with authority that Allah would not approve of these bombings and killings in his name.
Craig, Sydney, Australia
What a shame! Our world need more peace! We don't deserve it..All I hope is that argelian people don't suffur more agressions like this and that these terrorists be arrested and judged as they deserve.
Carlo Azambuja, Santa Cruz do Sul,RS, BRAZIL
Doc, you can't paint all Islamists with the same brush!!!! Christians have been blowing each other up in N. Ireland for years and I as a Christian have nothing to do with those Prats. You, it would appear are an Islamist however want peace

Can Al-Quaida be stopped?? or is it going to get worse
far worse?
David Nigel Braham, Milan, Italy
Guess what, the same people are killing again. We really are in a War on Terror. If you do not believe me, go to the graves.
Desmond Taylor, Houston, TX
Darn Islamists! Go away and leave the rest of us in peace so that our sons and daughters can live free, healthy, peaceful and prosperous lives. Today, US/Brazilian scientists reported on curing diabetes through stem cell treatment whilst we Arabs are engaged in stupid, pointless murder and political mayhem. Shame!
