UN acts to contain Darfur fallout

UNITED NATIONS The UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution yesterday authorising a European Union force and a UN mission to two African countries where civilians have been caught in the spillover of the Darfur conflict.

The EU has been authorised to deploy a military force for a year in eastern Chad and northeastern Central African Republic to improve security, ease delivery of aid and help to protect people in danger.

The resolution also sets up a UN mission in both countries that will include international police and experts in human rights, civil affairs and law. It will form a new unit of Chad police for refugee camps and areas with large numbers of displaced people. (AP)

Another meaningless resolution from the good-for-nothing money pit that is the UN. No doubt they'll be able to make up this new force from the leftovers of the peacekeeping force they have yet to send to Darfur.

Perhaps one day people will realise that these "resolutions" are just empty gestures. Some hope.
