Joaquim Chissano, a former President of Mozambique who led his country to peace after more than a decade of civil war killed a million of his citizens, became the first ever winner of a new £2.4 million ($5m) prize for achievement in Africa today.
Mr Chissano, who was in power between 1986 and 2005, was awarded the Mo Ibrahim award for achievement in London by Kofi Annan, a former United Nations Secretary General.
The former Mozambican President is credited with starting negotiations with the armed rebel movement, the Mozambican National Resistance, to bring an end to the murderous conflict, which had started after the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975. As a result, a peace agreement was struck and a new constitution was developed in 1990, bringing a permanent end to the civil war.
As well as one million deaths, the conflict in Mozambique left 1.7m people displaced. By mid-1995 the refugees - who had sought asylum in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia, Tanzania, and South Africa - had returned home as part of the largest repatriation programme ever seen in the region.
Announcing that Mr Chissano had won the award, Mr Annan said that the former President had set an example for young African leaders of the future to follow.
"President Chissano’s achievements in bringing peace, reconciliation, stable democracy and economic progress to his country greatly impressed the committee," Mr Annan said. "So, too, did his decision to step down without seeking the third term the constitution allowed."
The $5 million prize was established by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation which was launched last year to boost governance in Africa. Dr Ibrahim, the founder of the African telecommunications company Celtel International, is one of Africa’s most successful business leaders.
The winner was selected by a committee that assessed every sub-Saharan African leader who has left office in the past three years.

What really amazes me is the infinite capacity the people of Africa have to tolerate hardship. I hope some of the 2.4 million is used to aid the people of the country and not just to buy another Mercedes or beach property. The richer the politicians of Africa become, the harder it is for the common man to survive. As far as Mugabe is concerned, the less said the better. I was at Victoria Falls a month ago. Even the cooking oil has run out. Pity. Such a beautiful country. I swopped a $200 000 banknote for a beer!

What a man! You deserve this prize while living hero so you can feel how greatful we all are for your highly commended achievement to bring about the end of conflict, lasting peace, vibrant democracy and stead-fast economic growth to our country. I hope that you can use this prize for you and not-to-forget those who hand-in-hand also contributed to it. Not being so meaning, I also hope that rebel leaders, such as Mr. Afonso Dlhakama who co-signed the peace deal in Rome, putting they arms beyond use and by playing a constructive opposition role should also be prized!

Well done to Joaquim and the people of Mozambiqu who have silently gone about rebuilding their nation without drumming their chests. No doubt he will be humble in accepting this and donate it to his people. What a contrast to the man, whose wedding Chissano attended as best-man, just over the mountains from Mozambique. Mugabe will hear of this and no doubt his vanity will conclude for him that this is meant to make him look bad in the eyes of his people, not that he hasn't done that himself. Everything has to be about him in southern Africa but let's not take away what Chissano and Mozambique have achieved. Not the prize, but they have rebuilt their country and will succeed further. They are now better off than the ZImbabweans who used to chase refugees from their cities, calling them streetkids and rebels in disguise.

President Mugabe played a very important role to end civil war in Mozambique, the whole world should know that Zimbabweans soldiers paid with their blood to achieve the peace and stability in Mozambique.

Long live Africa! Chissano may young Africans follow your steps in this right direction .

This is some kind of sick joke isn't it? On what other continent would a political leader would get a cash prize for leaving a country so corrupt that it ranks 111th out of 179 countries in the world for political chicanery and whose son has been charged with economic crimes and the murder of an investigative journalist? And just to put the icing on the cake, the judges panel includes Kofi Annan. There is absolutely no hope for Africa but that is no doubt the fault of the West, isn't it?
