Jacob Zuma, the newly elected president of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was at the centre of renewed controversy yesterday after accepting an invitation to address a “blacks-only” meeting of South African journalists.
Mr Zuma, who is in line to become the country's next president in 2009, said that he saw nothing wrong in the decision by the Forum of Black Journalists (FBJ) not to allow any white journalists, including those known to be favourable to the ANC, to attend a luncheon at which he was the guest speaker.
Three well-known white journalists who tried to attend were asked to leave. The incident has infuriated many South Africans, of all races, who fear that it is a sign of Mr Zuma's intentions if he succeeds to the presidency when Thabo Mbeki steps down. Mr Zuma, who currently faces corruption charges, was elected ANC president in a bitterly fought contest last year.
“Such exclusion has no place in South Africa today and certainly not in a forum that represents journalists,” the South African National Editors' Forum, which represents white and non-white editors, said in a statement.
Radio 702, a popular phone-in radio station, has complained to the country's Human Rights Commission about the decision of the FBJ to restrict attendance to the event on the basis of skin colour alone. “What we are seeing here is reverse racism,” said one indignant caller, who was black.
Abbey Makoe, chairman of the newly formed FBJ, said that it was an association of people who “would politically in the South African context be defined as of African descent, coloureds and Indians”. He said that the body's “modus operandi” was to redress inherent past imbalances that affect journalists.
Mr Zuma appeared to agree. “All of us as South Africans in the 13 years of democracy come from different backgrounds ... there are experiences that people would have that they want to share together,” he said.
Many South Africans, particularly white people and those of mixed race, fear that a Zuma presidency would mark the end of the multiracial dream of a modern “Rainbow Nation”.

D sleeaman South African whites are not to blame for what's currently going on in Sa. And look at the rest of Africa famine, rape, murder, corruption the list is endless what could Sa possibly learn from them? The white people in South Africa build a country out of nothing , protected it against countries like Cuba ecs... If it wasent for Afrikaners Sa would be just as poor & corrupt as most of the other African countries. White people are the only hope Sa has for a better future.
Leo Nel, Bloemfontein, South Africa
Racism is defined thus... a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Cant see a colour described once in that defintion. It may shock Africa that when a Zulu calls a Xhosa a filthy name because he is Xhosa, he is being racist!

Mr Zuma
You are the next president of South Afria
On you shoulder will rest the fate of an entire nation
Including your black brothers and sisters.
It is time that you refine your actions, your wardrobe,
your self image to bring respect and authority to
the office you are about to hold
If you want a black only gathering, have it at your house
If you attend a back only conference, as a future leader
dont be nasty to exclude people of color for remember it is
on the backs of some people of color, particularly white, through dangerous time that the horrors of South Africa was revealed to the world.
By infurating those who wish, want and finance progress for the blacks you cut your own throat.
By themselves in this universe blacks in South Africa have fought bitterly, died in great number under attrocious conditions but on their own have not achieve alot without the help, assistance and protection of people from other races.
Zuma, you have not learnt from history
Bantu Michael Wilson, Atlanta, Georgia
The Rainbow Nation always was a dream, and is even more elusive now, not because of some lunch but because of Affirmative Action and BEE.
Many whites who are able to do so have already left SA, and many of those still there who can will leave when unemployment and/or crime becomes intolerable.
Whites tend only to mix socially with other whites (that includes liberal such as journalists0 and the same goes for blacks. I never saw a black face at any party I ever went to in Johannesburg. And once or twice I was the only white at a black party.
The lunch is not so very different from current Joburg society. Totally non-Rainbow.
David Short, London, UK
I'm sure the white journalists didn't miss anything interesting.

The thoughts of geneticist Dr Watson about the average level of intelligence in Africa gets proven every year. There are many intelligent Africans but sadly they are in the minority and can make no difference when uneducated communists such as Jacob Zuma are voted into power.
The end is in sight for the whites despite all the ANC propaganda and Mugabe's methods are now being adopted in SA. That is why Mbeki did nothing to censure Mugabe, and all the "stupids" in the West believed he was trying diplomacy with a man who laughs at such methods.
Now soon we will be expected again to hand over hard earned tax money to rescue such countries where the leadsr drive around in expensive cars and live in palaces while the masses live in shacks. As some blacks have already said on TV, "We were better off under Apartheid".
B J Deller, Marbella, Spain
It doesn't matter. In 20 years, there won't be any whites left in South Africa anyway. Same as what happened in Zimbabwe. The problem will self-solve. Everyone will be satisfied.
Paul Francis, Brisbane, Australia
Yes D Sleeman, white people do have themselves to blame. For going to a place, colonising it, controlling the population and have the audacity to complain when the local population fight back. Things maybe bad now but further white rule , black would have ended up like the native people of Australia and North America. It was only a matter of time before apartheid collapsed. Whites were outnumbered and the global economic system was against them. In a just world 2 wrongs don't make a right but this isn't a just world. The best solution was to agree in a power sharing with the blacks. The world order is changing. Get used to it!

Apartheid re-opening 2009, now under new management
John, CapeTown,
If this had happened 20 years ago it would be on the front pages, those rascist pesky Whites. Now its relegated to the middle somewhere; it did not even make the news in Canada. 61 people died at Sharpeville and it will be remembered forever and ever. More than 1000 have died in Kenya since the election and its just another Afican country in turmoil. Go figure.
GK, Calgary, Canada
The people of South Africa want a better future and they want the legacy of the nation to be a multicultural, diverse place where all it's components form an integral part of the country. That is why there is so much dislike for Zuma, because he represents backwardness and that is not where SA needs to go. But most annoying still is people like Mr James and D Sleeman, whether dissidents or not, alike former Rhodesians who only make their comments about Africa in trying to apease their guilt (believing that a nation of blacks could never succeed) because they have fled and hidden in the comfort of whites in Europe, safe to make comments from far away. Notice few comments are made here by people in South Africa, rather it is the exiles who make these grim and dour predictions about the prospects of SA and Africa. Shame on you, Mr James and D Sleeman! If you abandon Africa, do not continue to pretend your emotional opinion of it to be anything but bias and tabloidism.
Dean Mapaba, Newcastle, UK
Shocking indeed! I am presently reading this book ` A History of South Africa` by Frank Welsh and i have to say SA blacks has suffered a lot in the hands of the Afrikaners, i wish they never discovered our country but, we have to move on. Most people from all races in South Africa wants to live together in piece and what JZ is doing is absolutely wrong. I trully hope that people can see what damage will be done to our beautiful country if this man stays in control. You can just see by media reports were his PRIORITIES lies. People fought very hard for us as a nation to be were we are today. We know it is not all manna from heaven in SA but we are working towards a better future, as a nation of all races, unfortunately people like this will lead us into a dark hole.
tebogo, enfield,
âWhat we are seeing here is reverse racism,â said one indignant caller, who was black.
MMMMMMMMMMM
Interesting.
Reverse racism?.......
Classic black view...that racism is 'white on black'
This was not 'reverse racism'.... IT WAS JUST PLAIN OLD RACISM....
South Africa is already well down the tragic hill of ruin.... just like Zimbabwe!!!
Mr James, Sutton, England
South African whites have only themselves to blame; they were sold out by De Klerk et al, They learnt nothing from the history of other African nations,
The rainbow nation is a big con anyway,
D sleeman, Geneva, Switzerland
