President Mugabe betrayed yesterday signs of anxiety over tomorrow's elections as the scale of the clamour for change throughout Zimbabwe became ever more obvious.
About forty armoured vehicles, including four Israeli-made water cannon, anti-riot trucks and six armoured personnel carriers packed with heavily armed troops, travelled through central Harare in the afternoon - a show of force never before seen in any election since independence 28 years ago.
The President had delivered earlier an angry statement via State media, warning Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader, and his faction of the divided Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) against staging demonstrations if they lost the election. “If they make a disturbance like in Kenya, you will see,” he said. “We are not joking. We warn the MDC, if they want to put a rope around their necks, that is OK.”
Mr Tsvangirai has been urging his supporters to stay around the polling stations after casting their ballots, “to defend your votes” against attempts to rig the election. Despite Mr Mugabe's threat, Mr Tsvangirai repeated his call late yesterday to frenzied supporters at a rally in the neighbouring dormitory town of Chitungwiza. He held talks yesterday with the two other opposition leaders, Simba Makoni, Mr Mugabe's former Finance Minister, who has shaken the ruling Zanu (PF) party by his challenge to his erstwhile mentor, and Arthur Mutambara, leader of the smaller faction of the MDC, to work out a joint strategy against the expected attempts to rig the vote.
The three were due to make an unprecented joint appearance at a press conference, but Mr Tsvangirai had been delayed, Mr Makoni said. He added that the three had been discussing the threat of cheating and that their consultations had been “under way for some time”.
“It is crucial that the three of them confront the rigging jointly,” a Western diplomat said. “They have to do it together or Mugabe will beat them.”
Mr Makoni showed photographs of a large, empty field in a Harare township, where the only signs of development had been pegs in the ground to mark plots for would-be homeowners. Yet, according to the electoral roll, it is a ward where 8,000 people are resident with specific addresses, at a density of up to 75 people on each 30 sq m plot, and who are to be served by ten polling stations. “This is evidence of a deliberated, sophisticated and premeditated plan to steal the election from us,” Mr Makoni said.
Mr Mugabe denied that his Administration had rigged elections and was about to do so again. “They want to tell lies, lies,” he said.
However, his denial is undermined by the determination of Tobaiwa Mudede, the Registrar-General, to keep opposition parties from getting hold of a digitally searchable copy of the electoral roll, which still includes the names of the first two MDC activists murdered at the start of the 2000 election campaign, and that of Ian Smith, the former Prime Minister of white-ruled Rhodesia, who died last year.
Two years ago Mr Mudede defied court orders to give independent researchers access to ballot papers from the 2002 presidential election, when Mr Mugabe got 54 per cent of the vote after a savage campaign of intimidation.
It is not clear whether the President is aware of the depth of feeling against him, boosted daily by worsening hardship. Queues for bread and money in Harare yesterday appeared to have lengthened, as the basics of life become more difficult to find.

The last time someone in the world stood up to a violent and oppressive dictator guilty of murdering his own people, the rest of the world cried shame.
That was only five years ago. How can anyone expect any nation, especially the United States, to have the guts to remove another dictator?
Hugh, blank, Australia
An international arrest warrant for Mugabe should have been sworn out for genocide so would have been exposed to the world for the murderer he is and would have been in Court in the Hague. There is no need to invade Zimbabwe. It should have been done in the 1980s when he murdered 20.000 Matabele tribesmen, his Shona tribe's opposition.
But the world had to wait until thousands of Zimbabweans are dead or living in abject misery as many Africans hav in te last 60 years after getting their "freedom", and a country is just about finished before taking the correct action. Ian Smith, who spoke the truth as we now witness, should be venerated for the wise and excellent leader that he was, not terrorists. History should be written truthfully, not by Marxists.
Ian Smith's statue should be in London in a prominent place as true Englishman (an RAF fighter pilot in WW2) who helped to civilise the world until the Western masses were taken in by Marxist propaganda. Shame on us all!

People who are in far away lands should exercise restraint when commenting on Zimbabwe. We are here and see whats happening. For someone to support tyranny and dictatorship is an act of blind worshiping a certain individual whose deeds have taken away not only lives but hope, freedom, prosperity and above all the most basic of human rights such as right to express oneself. We live in fear because of the CIO,Army,Police who terrorise anyone who dissents from those in power. We have questions and it will be good to have them answered by those responsible one day and that day is here with us, if you do not believe it come here and see for yourself. In any case the forex you bring would do our country a lot of good compared to your blind support of Tyranny....
MLT Njanike, Harare,
Why do people have to continually take snipes at America by saying that the only reason we don't invade Zimbabwe is because there is no oil. So you'd support our invading the country?? Like hell. If America entered the fro it would just be one more reason for the world to hate America even more than it already does. What bothers me is that everyone hates us but still expects us to intervene in far away countries whenever there are gross human rights abuses, or to bail them out with policies like ZEDRA, which calls for the US to forgive all Zimbabwes debt owed to the US, the World Bank, and the IMF, and then set up a Zimbabwean Economic Recovery Unit in Zimbabwe to help rebuild their infrastucture... If you didn't hate us so much perhaps we would go in if we believed that we would at least have popular support, rather than being villified which is of course what would happen. You can't have it both ways. We are very apprehensive about "helping" any country because of the fall out.

lt makes me so angry at times when l see these politians in thier expensive suits and cars fight for power through means of violence at the expense of the poor. l urge all those voting tommorrow to know were they put their x and the penalties to be paid if thay make a bad choice. l have lost lost of relatives and friends due to illness that could have been avoided if there had been enough medication. I hear people demand more sanctions and l ask myself , why? lt is our poor relatives who suffer, those with the money and higher positions prosper at our expense. why is everyone so power hungry, this is all just greed

Why is the white world more interested in Zimbabwe than Black people? Why did Mugabe become a monster to the white world only when he sacked white farmers? As an enlightened Black man, I support Mugabe to win not because I agree that one person should rule forever, but because it is the right thing to defy the dubious white people claiming they love Black Zimbabweans more than they love themselves! God Bless the majority of Zimbabweans for refusing to be recolonized!!

My prediction is that Mugabe will win by a landslide and we will be forced to endure that smug SADC rubbing everyone's nose in it. They will be lauding how excluding foreign interference has kept the Zim election free and fair.
Even if the election is rigged, SADC will deny it; we'll be lucky if their delegation makes it out of their five star hotel on voting day.
Basically, the free world will be forced to turn its back on the suffering of the Zimbabwean people for another five years. Then, when the truth finally comes out, everyone (particularly the SADC countries) will be asking "How could this have happened?"
It's tragic

Take time to listen to the lyrics of this song. Zimbabwe goes to the polls on Saturday 29th of March ,2008. There is no sunshine until he is gone. Here is to a new Zimbabwe. Free of Tyranny. For those who have ears.... let them listen and make the change for a new dawn, a new Zimbabwe.

I can safely confirm that this is the Armageddon of Mugabe and his desciples ! We have suffered for too long and call upon the alliance of all oppositional forces to amalgamate his downfall . My Zimbabwe a former land of plenty is now as heart bleedening as the ochestra played on a sinking Titanic ! Hetheto , the departure of the tyrant will bringforth a second Biblical Feeding of The Five Thousand with 3 Loaves and 2 Fish !

Its time for a CHANGE and that time is now! How much more suffering will the people of Zimbabwe endure before they realize that Mugabe is not the one! I urge people of Zimbawe to fight either through elections, and if that gets rigged, then i'm afraid do what the Kenyans did!
Kevin, London, UK
Now is the time a change in Zimbabwe, only Zims can make that change, start building what once was the power-house of African economy..yes there will be problems as ussual with Mugabe trying to steal votes but the people can win and send this evil to the dumps for good..I pray and hope people think well before casting their votes and make the right mark and start building Zim again.
Make this happen please vote him out.

Does anyone know if Mr. speaker Martin has been on a fact finding tour of Zimbabwe? We seem to becoming rather more like this great democracy every day!
Jim Golightly, Prudhoe, England
Mugabe will, of course, rig the election. The only thing that might put an end to this is if the MDC went ahead with the protests, and Mugabe's reaction was so extreme that South Africa's leaders felt compelled to intervene.
But given how tepid their reaction to the crisis has been so far, I doubt it. Africa's elites have been allowing Mugabe to get away with this.
Owen, London, UK
i find it remarkable that we are STILL reading about this. It is like a retrospective window looking back in time.
WHY is nothing been done about this? WHY I ask?
What about the citizens of Zimbabwe? We need to help them and their hyperinflated economy ... 100,000% inflation.
It is gross negligence that we are still sat here watching this happen in what is meant to be a highly civilized western democracy.

If only Zimbabwe had oil!!!!
mike, GLOS, UK
please take this chance and stand up and be counted Vote him out and move out of this Dark Cloud that Zimbabwe has lived under for so long. We in the West have to ready to help the Zimbabwean people as Mugarbe will not go quietly. I have family still left in Zimbabwe and we are only being told a fraction of the news and the feeling within that country. I hope MDC win and the numbers are so great that Africa has to get involved and get rid of Mugarbe once and for all. People are having to indure hardships that they do not deserve. Be Brave...
