A flamboyant archeologist known worldwide for his trademark Indiana Jones hat believes he has identified the site where Cleopatra is buried.
Now, with a team of 12 archeologists and 70 excavators, Zahi Hawass, 60, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, has started searching for the entrance to her tomb.
And after a breakthrough two weeks ago he hopes to find her lover, the Roman general Mark Antony, sharing her last resting place at the site of a temple, the Taposiris Magna, 28 miles west of Alexandria.
Hawass has discovered a 400ft tunnel beneath the temple containing clues that the supposedly beautiful queen may lie beneath. “We’ve found tunnels with statues of Cleopatra and many coins bearing her face, things you wouldn’t expect in a typical temple,” he said.
A fortnight ago Hawass’s team discovered a bust of Mark Antony, the Roman general who became Cleopatra’s lover and had three children with her before their ambitions for an Egyptian empire brought them into conflict with Rome.
They committed suicide – he with his sword, she reputedly by clutching an asp to her breast – after being defeated by Octavian in the battle of Actium in 31BC. “Our theory is that both Cleopatra and Mark Antony are buried here,” said Hawass.
The archeologist, best known in Britain for demanding the return of the Rosetta Stone from the British Museum and for promoting the Tutankhamun exhibition at the O2 dome in London, believes the temple’s location would have made it a perfect place for Cleopatra to hide from Octavian’s army.
Work on the site has been suspended until the summer heat abates and is due to resume in November, when Hawass will use radar to search for hidden chambers.
The queen’s life and death were immortalised in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, and the Hollywood movie Cleopatra – starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who fell in love during the filming – but the location of her tomb has remained a mystery.
If Hawass is right, he could make the greatest archeological discovery in Egypt since Tutankhamun’s tomb was uncovered by the British archeologist Howard Carter in 1922.
Other experts are cautious, though. John Baines, professor of Egyptology at Oxford University, warned that searching for royal tombs often proved a “hopeless” task. He also doubted that Antony would be buried alongside his lover.
“It’s unlikely Mark Antony would have a tomb that anyone would be able to discover because he was the enemy at the time he died,” he said.
Hawass, however, remains defiant. “This is our theory. Others may disagree, but we are searching to see if we can prove it,” he said.

OMG!I can`t believe he is going to so RICH!And...I really hope he will find it and be a star!!!!!!!!!And it is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!
Caitlyn, Cherry hill, United States
Oh my god hes gonna be real rich. And he should do what he thinks is right!!!
Schaunagh, Bilton, Hull, England
Wow! If this tomb was actually uncovered all history books in the world will have to re-written and Oh my God that would be amazing that maybe one day we could go see the treasures from acient Egypt actually in our faces.. This man is going to be VERY rich!!.. ;)
Isabela H, Worcester, USA
This would be totally awsome. As a historian I am looking forward to what we can gain from this information. GOOD LUCK! Hope to see a success story in a few months and looking forward to reading about it and and maybe visiting one day.
Jenny Stewart, Lino Lakes, USA
I think he should go ahead and try, as in you never know whats below your feet!
Tara Phadnis, Reading, UK
Discovery of our mutual past should include the world and not just one country or nation, we must all learn from our history, how we got here and what did Ancient Egypt know back then but now has faded as time marched on. we are all looking toward our future but we need to know our past first.
Brian, colorado springs, usa
this is kinda upsetting i onlay wanted to be an archeologist to find cleopatra i really hope this is not her sorry but that was what i wanted to do when i graduated from high school this ruined my life goal!
April Clements, des moines, u.s.a
Dear Robert in Oklahoma... the treasures Dr. Hawass have found and will find do NOT belong to the WORLD they belong to EGYPT, seeing that they are excavating Ancient EGYPTIAN tombs and such. Therefore, being the head of the Antiquities entitles him to feel that they are his as well as his country's
Steph, KC, USA
Cleopatra was a mystic and used sex to gain political aims, the best book on Cleopatra is by Talbot Mundy (Queen Cleopatra), which is lesser known but a great read.
Andras Nagy, Sacramento, California
Every1always gets hung up on Cleopatra's alleged beauty.Ever1 seems2forget the obvious-she was Greek&contemporary likenesses have the usual 'big Greek nose'.Cleopatra was was extremely intelligent, well read, witty&spoke a few languages.Different2the typical brood mare roman wife Marc+Caesar left.
Jennifer Mills-Young, Darwin, Australia
Dear Robert (Oklahoma), Dr. Hawass may have his own personal motives like any good archeologist, but Egypt has wisely placed him a the head archiologist for their country; so what is his is theirs - let them both have the fun. The whole wortld wins with any new 'pubicised' find.
SHYork, Salt Lake City, USA
I don't trust Dr Hawass. He treats the treasures of Egypy like they belong to him instead of the whole world. If he's found it then more power to him. What a wonderful find, but someone needs keep an eye on the dig and make sure we don't find the wooden head of a young Tut hidden in a wine box.
robert , oklahoma city, usa
Apparently they have found Cleopatra's sister Arsinoe at Ephysus and she had an African mother. Certainly if Cleopatra is found that the knowledge gained would give an insight into the people who ruled Egypt then but expect that what we know of this history may not be that accurate.
Mike, Oshawa, Canada
I have always been fascinated with the story of Cleopatra...I knew she had a total of four children...one with Ceasar and three with Anthony...I always wanted to be the one to discover her tomb, but it Hawass discovers it will be over joyed...He is a great archeaologist and I admire his work...
Raquel Roberts, Vacaville, United States
Hawass is the best of the best, in my opinion. What would be his point in hiding the truth? He's out to uncover and discover answers from that magical time. I also have done some research and I think Antony would be beside Cleopatra. Octavian granted her her final wish.
Jennifer, Casper, United States
I have found nothing more on this yet, which is very sad. Anyways, I agree with Hawass. After reading Plutarch's Life of Antony several times, and as he tells us that Cleopatra gave Mark Antony a formal burial and that after her death Caesar granted her burial next to her beloved husband Antony.
Hannah, Grand Rapids, USA
i hope that they really found cleopatra tomb because i am doing a project and i am going to make a sculpture af her at the time of her death and so that they can know how she really died
anna, newyork, new york
I belive all though Hawass a great archeologist he does stand firm on anything he personaly belives right and then rubishes all others opions on the subject. Many people feel he is hidding the truth. As for cleopatra it would be a nice end to a long career for him. and i wish him well.
ash, chester, uk
this is a great break through for me, i was studying egypty for 1 year when i came across cleopatras love story and her tomb not being found, after a year of studing her and trying to find clues i had to give up and now that her tomb is found i am inspired again and hope i can contine on mi studies
melodie, oamaru, new zealand
I am doing a project on Cleopatra, and I hope he did find the tomb. That would be so great because it would solve the question of if she was pretty or not. If they did (it's 2008 now) I hope I can find out where what and who for my project. I hope they found her!
Ally, Camas, USA
My 10yr old daughter wanted to find Cleopatra's tomb... for archeology's sake, I hope that Dr. Hawass has discovered it - however, I hate to break the news to my child that her goal will need be altered....
Pam, Ft Worth, TX
personaly i believe hawass did find the tomb, he is a brilliant man ,we know she existed ,it is posible!
olivia , salt lake, usa
If that is Cleopatra finale resting place, how come it took many centriues to find her resting place in the tomb, Can her mummifed body explain another history towards her life expericence. I'm named after her, so I just want to know about more of her history.
Cleopatra Stewart, Huntsville, AL
if it were not for the rest of the world finding these things for egypts cuture then they would still be in the dark ages about this subject sorry hawass finders keepers
TIM FOSTER, bournemouth, england
The Berlin and British Museums properly conserve and safeguard Egyptian antiquities. If the history of the pharonic mummies stored in a stairwell for years, handled by bare-handed Egyptian museum staff is any indication, no doubt the antiquities received better treatment abroad than in Egypt.
Jeff, Gurnee, U.S.A.
As a reputable Egyptologist, Dr Zahi Hawaas has all the rights to claim back his own countrie's treasures. It is very sad to know that for instance the Obelik was taken to Paris, the bust of Nefertiti to Berlin, The Rosseta stone to England, etc etc
My respects to Dr Hawass for his determination
Enrique, Vancouver, Canada
Egypt has the right to have her treasures returned. With items spread all over the planet, how can her own archaeologists have any chance of obtaining that one little bit of information that is missing when it is "missing" in some dusty drawer of an ancient museum! Return her things, her history!
Susi, Charleston, USA
Dr Hawass is right to demand the return of antiquities that England (and other countries) took from his country. I imagine England would be pretty upset if Egypt had the Magna Carta and refused to return it. Despite his flamboyance, he's still careful with the digs and I wish him good luck.
Joy A, Sacramento, USA
For Hawass to come out and say what he has I beleive he already has the evidence in hand. This will increase his respect and power around the world. I like the guy and expect to see something great come Nov-Dec of this year.
D. Howard, Mt. Holly, USA
I hope the place Dr. Hawass finds is actually Cleopatra's tomb
Hannah, Keelung, Taiwan
In the Fur language of Darfur kuo fuo means the blower of the spirit. The name is composed from two words , Kuo means spirit the second word Fuo means blew.
The Fur believe that Kuo Fuo is the God of soul and that he is the endower of life
Mohamed Baraka, Slough, Berkshire
I think Hawas is one fo the greatest archeaologists and alot of people don't like him because he think UFO's building pyramids is rubbish. He is very knowledgeable and looks like a true descendent of the ancient Egyptians himself.
Cathy, Kenner, U.S.
I wonder if she had a big nose afterall?
Thursty, Wollongong, Australia
I disagree with prof baines. Antony was not the enemy at the time he died, so it is quite likely that if Cleopatra is buried there, then he would be with her.
Rome was at war with Cleopatra officially, rather than him; and Octavian ordered their tomb completed and their burial plans honoured.
stuart, llanelli, uk
If anyone can find the tomb of Antony and Cleopatra, it's Dr. Hawass. I look forward to the day when this discovery takes place and the facts are finally revealed about the two. Their story is one of the most romantic tales ever told ---it will be very interesting.
Deby , Cerritos, United States
My hope is that the excavation of her tomb, if it is, reveals the truth about her. The recorded history that most of us know for 2,000 yrs was recorded by Rome and Rome resented her. These suspect records I hope will be dispelled and the true intelligent dedicated to her country Cleopatra revealed.
Michele Sarrazin, Northampton, Massachusetts
I hope this is Antony and Cleopatra,as knowing most of the struggles they faced and having their lives cut short together, its great to think that they may actually be together in their tomb, for them being together was something life took away from them.
Louise Hopkins, Newton Abbot, England
I have to agree that Dr. Hawass is an egomaniac and a constant promoter of himself and anything he says is "suspect". However, he is a competent archeologist who is in control of Egypts archeological secrets. The world need to "humor" him in to sharing all as I don't think he necessarily has.
jack sahakian, redondo beach, usa
Maybe they should try to disprove it, instead of trying to prove it...
I just hope that Hawass doesn't organize yet another televized flop like he has a before, and that he doesn't just decides to use a drill again, without any idea of what could be on the other side of the wall he destroys.
John Materson, San Francisco,
can't everybody just leave poor Cleo Aloooone? boo hoo hoo
tom, haverford, usa
To be able to find any historical data on Cleo is amazing for in the history of Eygpt the people would try to destroy any data on their Pharohs depending on how they treated their people. Cleo knew what the Roman Empire was about and she only sought to protect her people by sacrificing herself.
Tammy, Jacksonville, USA
So many of the ancient legends have turned out to be true, or at least have elements of the truth in them. I think of the recent discovery of what most assuredly is the cave of Romulus and Remus - what a mindblower that that has been located!
What if they find Atlantis? I will swoon!
C. Kaye, CHICAGO, USA
I'll follow this with interest. Egypt continues to yield interesting finds and to generate controversy. With the scientific techniques available today it should be easier to identify whoever is in this tomb. Whatever is said about Dr Hawass his methods are rigorous.
Dealga O'Callaghan, Liverpool, England
Cleopatra,s tomb would be an amazing discovery, and would close another chapter in history. However, the chances of Anthony's burial there also is slim.
Johnson Bailey, Broken Arrow, USA
When history is revived from the pages of books and brought to life, it's a beautiful thing. I wish for them that they find Cleo and Mark after all their hard work and I wish for us all to learn the true history of the past.
Phil, West Palm Beach, FL, United States of America
Mark Anthony in his Will requested he be buried with Cleopatra. Octavian illegally opened Anthony's Will while Anthony was alive. It had been left in sacred trust with the Vestal Virgins in their temple in Rome. Octavian turned Rome against Anthony using this information.
Later he honoured Anthony and may have agreed to bury him with Cleo
Rose Moloney, Findhorn,
Extremely cool!
The minute I get word of anything conclusive (I have a friend/licenced guide in Egypt) I am down there!
Sarah, Rome, Italy
Antony probably is buried with Cleo. The ancient sources all say that Octavian permitted it as per Cleo's request. This is not necessarily for "love", but more for political/religious reasons.
frances murray, Des Plaines, United States of America
Dr. Hawass has only punished archaeological missions and individuals who have released excavation information without clearing it through the Supreme Council of Antiquities, not because he wanted to share in someone elses discoveries.
Pat Patterson, Dallas,
I think it would be wonderful if they actually did find Cleopatra's tomb. i don't think however that they would find Antony with her. It doesn't seem right.
Nancy, Dade City, United States
Hawass is in control of who has access to Egypt's ruins. He has always been an egomaniac who has forced archaeologists to 'allow' him to share discoveries and punished them when they haven't credited him.
I suspect just about anything this man says.
Mr Bigg, Seattle, USA
Octavian spared the children of Anthony and Cleopatra. Caesarian (potential rival and son of G Julius Caesar and Cleopatra VII) was eliminated but might also be buried in the same chamber. The idea that Octavian, the winner in the contest, would be magnanimous makes sense.... I hope they've got it!
David, Charlotte, United States
