World's population of migrants hits 175m

THE number of migrants in the world has more than doubled in the past 25 years and is set to continue rising, according to the United Nations.

It says that 175 million people live outside their country of birth, amounting to almost one in 30 of the world population. The majority of the world’s migrants live in the developed world, a report by the UN Population Division says.

About 2.3 million migrants move from the Third World to the West every year, or a total of 12 million in the past five years. About half of these go to North America. Only about 16 million people, or one in ten of all migrants, are refugees.

More migrants live in Europe than anywhere else: 56 million residents live outside their country of birth, with Britain, Germany and France the favourite destinations. By contrast, there are 50 million migrants in Asia, and 42 million in North America.

The US was home to 35 million migrants in 2000, more than any other country.

About 40 per cent of countries have policies aimed at cutting immigration, with developed countries the most likely to pursue reductions.
