A Nasa astronaut has been charged with attempted kidnapping after driving 900 miles to confront a woman she believed was a rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot, according to police documents.
Navy Captain Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, drove 12 hours from her home in Texas to Orlando International Airport so she could intercept Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, who had just flown in, it is said.
She allegedly told officers that she wore a nappy, as astronauts do during launch and re-entry, so she would not have to stop on the journey.
Mrs Nowak, a married mother of three, was friendly with Navy Commander William Oefelein, a pilot on space shuttle Discovery’s trip to the space station last December, and believed Ms Shipman was having a relationship with him, it is said.
In the early hours of Monday morning, wearing a trench coat and the wig, she waited for Ms Shipman to arrive and then followed her to her car, saying she wanted to talk.
But Ms Shipman, an engineer assigned to the 45th Launch Support Squadron at Patrick Air Force base near the Kennedy Space Centre, became scared and locked herself in the vehicle. After pretending that she was stranded, Mrs Nowak persuaded Ms Shipman to lower her window a couple of inches and then allegedly squirted pepper spray into her eyes.
Ms Shipman managed to drive away and the police were called.
Detective William Becton interviewed Mrs Nowak at the airport. In the charging affidavit he states that Ms Nowak was involved in a relationship with Mr Oefelein, a father of two. “The relationship was categorised as more than a working relationship, but less than a romantic relationship. Mrs Nowak discovered that Mr Oefelein was also involved with Ms Shipman.”
He adds in the document: “Mrs Novak stated that she was not trying to cause any bodily harm to Ms Shipman and that she only wanted to scare her into talking with her.
“I asked Mrs Nowak about the steel mallet and the BB gun. Mrs Nowak stated that the BB gun was going to be used to entice Ms Shipman to talk with her.”
Mrs Nowak was charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail.
A Navy commander, Mr Oefelein is a former test pilot who attended Topgun, the US Navy Fighter Weapons School. He has flown more 3,000 hours in more than 50 types of aircraft, including over 200 carrier landings, according to Nasa.
A Nasa spokesman, James Hartsfield, said that, as of Monday, Mrs Nowak’s status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged.
“What will happen beyond that, I will not speculate,” he said.
Officers also found rubber tubing, $600 (£305) and rubbish bags inside a bag that Mrs Nowak was carrying when she was arrested, authorities said.
Inside Mrs Nowak’s vehicle, which was parked at a nearby motel, authorities uncovered latex gloves and e-mails between Ms Shipman and Mr Oefelein. They also found a letter “that indicated how much Mrs Nowak loved Mr Oefelein,” Ms Shipman’s home address and hand written directions to the address, the arrest affidavit said.
“If you were just going to talk to someone, I don’t know that you would need a wig, a trench coat, an air cartridge BB gun and pepper spray,” said Sergeant Barbara Jones, a spokeswoman for the Orlando Police Department. “It’s just really a very sad case. ... Now she ends up finding herself on the other side of the law with some very serious charges.”

If there is anyone out there that can "cast the first stone" at this woman, or the two others, please do so, otherwise, go look in a mirror!!! Not saying what these people have done is right, but they have a Judge and what they sow, they will reap. Let us use this example for the rest of us to clean up our acts, whatever that may be. Pray for each other instead of judging, for with whatever measure you judge another, you will be judged.
God Bless!

I am so sorry to hear about Mrs Novak and her problems.
It just goes to show regardless of intelligence emotional problems

This woman has just shown exactely that, she is in fact a woman! She must be an astonishingly driven person to arrive at what she has, I mean my understanding is that to be an astronaut one has to be a scientist, a pilot, and very disciplined mentally, not to mention physical toughness required for the job. To than go and fall fowl of jelausy to this extenct, (we're not talking threatening e-mails here), add to this that it is also adultery, proves that she is just as fallable as anyone. Perhaps more so, all that training and competition, she is a Navy officer, had to explode somewhere, and it almost did!

absolutly absurd behavior......unbecoming of an astronaut...professional person or woman of such education.

Not surprising, if you know successful engineers, scientists, and military pilots. That is who is in the astronaut corps. They suffer from tunnel vision. Because they are gifted, they don't fail frequently so they can't handle failure and rejection. They also think that they are special and the rules of life don't apply to them. I was an engineer. I was also a pilot trained by the reserves. The most interesting book I ever read was on salesmanship, "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins, because, in constrast, successful salespersons fail and are rejected many times daily.

Sadly, after Lt. Watada's conviction for "conduct unbecoming an officer", a charge that could be leveled against any officer attending Happy Hour at the "O" Club, (been there, done that) we will certainly be tortured about the upcoming efforts by military justice to get their pound of flesh from the two high flying US Navy, diaper wearing astronauts and an Air Force Captain involved in a trilogy of high altitude sex and "fraternization" with married partners plus a charge of attempted murder to eliminate a younger woman from the sexy plot!
This brings to memory the Air Force Captain B-52 female pilot who was having an affair with an (omigosh) enlisted swine who dared to dip his wicket in an officer! Shame, shame!
Will this all be relevant to the National Security of the United States? Will we still be able to sleep at night knowing that all this hanky panky is going on in the military, AGAIN?
What will the Commander in Chief do???!!!
BTW, how do Navy Captain's drive 900 miles without a stop for gas?

Emotional discipline , or lack of it, can overcome the best of people. The breaking point is different for each person.
It is interesting to see that an astronaut, who is trained , tested and proven in analytical thinking, can be blinded by emotion.
Yes. She needs help to deal with this. So do her teenage child (and 2 five year olds).
She recently separated from her husband.
We all need someone to listen to our emotions.

Well she won't find much space in jail

This poor young woman needs compassion and understanding. She needs help with dealing with her emotions; someone needs to explain to her in the sternest possible way that her behavior is unacceptable.

No, CAPTAIN Nowak does not need compassion and understanding. She is a mature adult who holds one of the highest ranks in the Navy. At her rank she could just as easily be commanding an aircraft carrier or nuclear submarine, entrusted with the lives of thousands of sailoras. Criminal charges aside, she she should face a general court martial, dishonorable discharge, stripping of all rank and privileges, and made to repay the American taxpayer the millions of dollars they have invested in her career. This is surely what would happen to a young enlisted sailor. Commander Oefelein? Perhaps a little less, for his "conduct unbecoming an officer" also led to the entire mess!

well when you mix your life with adultery, work with lustful deeds, not thinking what your kids gonna think of you when they found out, then the husband that you are going to betray, plus the relatives, the NASA and how the public is going to respond? This is only few things to think about. What about murder or attempted murder? Her carrier did not really matter afterall. why didn't she just engage in sex education rather than wasted all her effort and time and money to get where she is now then ruin it for ONE lousy man???
this blows my mind to bits!!!

Wow.

my own opinion regarding this matter is love is a powerful force either directed or misdirected. all of us carry this precious feeling inside us and at different levels. channeling this feeling is can be complacated. i sincerely hope that as we read this account, a proper understanding of this situation will be acquired. let us be thankful that all parties in this situation were spared a worst fate.
