India expressed concern yesterday over Australia’s continued detention of an Indian doctor suspected of links with terror attacks in Britain.
The worries follow an order from Australia’s Immigration Minister that Mohamed Haneef be held at a detention centre in Sydney for immigration violations only hours after a magistrate freed him on bail in connection with the terror allegations.
John McCarthy, the Australian High Commissioner, was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi yesterday to hear of India’s concerns. He said the Indian Government had “showed concern about the impact of certain aspects of the legal processes as portrayed publicly in Australia”.
Human rights activists in Australia have expressed anger at the way the Government ignored a legal order to release Dr Haneef after he was granted bail of A$10,000 (£4,200). The magistrate said there was no clear evidence linking him to the bomb plots in London and Glasgow, where a Jeep laden with explosives was driven into the main airport terminal.
A 50-page government dossier outlining the case against Dr Haneef was released in Sydney yesterday. It claims that Dr Haneef had been in regular contact with his cousins, Sabeel and Kafeel Ahmed, who are both in custody in Britain.
