Shots silence Afghan leader
KABUL Hamid Karzai, the Afghan President, cut short an address to mark the murder by al-Qaeda of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the resistance hero, in 2001, after police fired warning shots to control Massoud devotees. The National Front, the main opposition group, is made up of many of Massoud’s compatriots. (AFP)
Protests over bomb attacks
ALGIERS Political parties, unions and civil society groups organised protests against terrorism that were attended by tens of thousands of Algerians after two suicide bomb attacks claimed by an al-Qaeda offshoot killed at least 52 people. (AFP)
Rifleman kills eight in village
ANKARA A man shot dead eight people with a hunting rifle in a small village in southwest Turkey before fleeing. The shootings took place in the hamlet of Karaadilli in Afyon province. The gunman was identified only by the initials O.T. (AFP)
TV host sacked for Nazi praise
BERLIN NDR, the German TV network, sacked Eva Herman, 48, a talk-show host, after she praised the Nazis’ family policies at a news conference for her book on child-rearing. She said that Nazi-era family values were “something good”. (Reuters)
Escape tunnel is unearthed
JERUSALEM Israeli archaeologists said they had discovered the subterranean drainage channel used by Jews to escape from the Roman sacking of Jerusalem in AD70. Pottery shards, vessel fragments and coins inside the channel confirmed its age. (AP)

MADRID Shepherds from across the world joined their Spanish counterparts, left, to lead sheep through the centre of Madrid in defence of grazing routes threatened by urban sprawl. (AP)
Votes cast in violent election
GUATEMALA CITY Voters in Guatemala cast their ballots in presidential, legislative and municipal elections after a bloody campaign in which 50 people were killed. Candidates have pledged to tackle rampant crime and violence in the country. (AFP)
