Bomb attackers are given life sentences
NEW DELHI A court sentenced 23 people to life imprisonment for their role in bomb blasts that killed 58 people in a southern Indian town nine years ago.
A total of 70 people were convicted for their role in the planting of 19 bombs in Coimbatore on February 14, 1998, shortly before Lal Krishna Advani, the Hindu nationalist leader, was to address an election rally. He was not present at the attack as his flight was delayed.
S.A. Basha, the founder of a banned radical Muslim group, Al-Umma, was among those sentenced yesterday.
The town was the scene of clashes between Hindu and Muslim mobs in November 1997 when 17 people, mostly Muslims, died. (AP)
