The Tamil Tigers’ political chief and number two in command was killed yesterday in an air force raid, dashing hopes for a quick end to the resurgent conflict in Sri Lanka.
S. P. Thamilselvan, 40, was the international face of the rebels, who are fighting for a Tamil homeland in the northeast, and was their main negotiator at the last round of peace talks in Geneva in October last year.
He had taken part in almost every round of talks since 1994.
The rebels said in a statement that he was killed with five other Tiger leaders in an air raid on their territory at about 6am local time.
Rebel and army spokesmen confirmed the deaths.
“Head of our organisation’s political division, Brigadier S. P. Thamilselvan, was killed by the Sri Lankan Air Force aerial bombing,” said the statement.
Brigadier Thamilselvan – always smiling and carrying a polished walking stick – was regarded as the Tigers’ de facto prime minister and second only to the group’s secretive leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, who has not been seen in public for years.
His death was seen as an important victory for government forces, whose conflict with the Tigers has claimed more than 5,000 lives since a 2002 peace deal unravelled early last year. It came the week after the armed forces were humiliated by a daring Tiger attack on the Anuradhapura air base, which killed 14 soldiers and destroyed eight spy planes. However, analysts said that Brigadier Thamilselvan’s death had further clouded the prospects for talks to end a conflict that has killed more than 70,000 people since it began in 1983. The Tigers, who launched their campaign to protect the ethnic Tamil minority from discrimination by the Sinhalese majority, usually retaliate for such military setbacks with suicide bombings.
The Government is now widely rumoured to be preparing to begin an offensive to capture the north and crush the rebels after successfully dislodging them from territory in the east this year.
Critics say that there can be no military solution to the conflict and have raised concerns about escalating human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings on both sides.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Defence Minister and brother of the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapakse, welcomed the news of Brigadier Thamilselvan’s death and pledged to kill the remaining Tiger leaders one by one.
“This is just a message, that we know where their leaders are,” he said. “I know the locations of all the leaders, that if we want we can take them one by one, so they must change their hideouts.”

This is like killing Gerry Adams or Martin Maguines during the Northen Ireland peace talks. Sri Lankan govt has shown it is not intent on peace by assassinating a Tamil peace negotiator. This attack does not give the Sri Lankan govt any military advantage whatsoever. So why did they do it? Sri Lankan govt is ONLY interested in anhilating the Tamils or at the behest of IC giving a peace deal rammed down the Tamils neck at the end of a bayonet. Tamil retaliation will be Eelam.

Are the international community convince enough that Sl gov has never been interested in peace nor bringing a peaceful solution to the ethnic conflict? The most worrying thing is the ongoing celebrations in rural singhalese communities after the death of SP.T. The peace messenger has been brutally murdered, now what? The only way the Tamils are going to leave peacefully is through gaining their own autonomy-Tamil Eelam.

âthe tamil tigers started this war to protect the tamils from discrimination by the sinhaleseââ¦. Readers, please donât believe this statement, this is an absolute and blatant lie! The constitution of sri-lanka does not discriminate against anyone nor is there any kind of legal discrimination. In contrast, the different ethnic and religious groups in sri-lanka get on very well with each other. It is truely a rainbow nation. Just look at the sri-lankan cricket team! If you donât believe me, please visit and observe for yourself.
In addition, in order to rectify disempowerment of sri-lankan tamils from political power and the political process, there have been various power sharing proposals suggested by the sri-lankan governments over the years at least for a decade now all rejected by the tamil tigers themselves who are only interested in militancy and war to the detriment of all sri-lankans who were hoping for an early peace.
Kerry, London, UK
Killing a peace negotiator proves that the Sri Lankan Government is not really interested in peace. The Government officials boasted about the targeted killing. This is a new acquired capability by the Sri Lankan Government. Who supplied this capability? How this has helped democracy , justice for all or peace?
Balendran, London, UK
What is surprising is that rather than going for a military leader of the Tamil Tigers, the Sri Lankan government had decided to kill the groups Political Head.
Why?
Peter Ratnadurai, London,
This attack on the LTTE's 2nd in command will definately cause an all out war. Already, the international tamil community are angry over what the Sri Lankan government has done, just imagine what the feeling would be in the Tamil Tiger Camp. This has in no way helped the peace negotiations, and I feel that the international community will now side with the the Tamil Tigers because of this cowardly act. I was on the fence about this situation, but now I can clearly see where my loyalties lie.
Michelle, Melbourne, Australia
Tamil Chelvam was a terrorist - pure and simple. Time and time again he proved to be a stumbling block in peace talks and along with the rest of the LTTE delegation, never participated in good faith. He never passed on the opportunity to whitewash LTTE crimes including the murder of the respected foreign minister Kadirgamar. At the time of his death, Tamil Chelvan was leading the LTTE cadres in the frontlines in a military capacity. This was a perfectly legitimate target. He will not be missed by anyone who truely desires peace and do not believe in appeasing terrorists at any cost
Niro, London, UK
The Tamils are an enthnic group who are mainly Hindus.
The sinhalese are another ethnic group who are mainly
Buddhists. Somethings gone wrong in their relationship with
each other. Would'nt it be better in the first instant to form a
confederation of two states, the Sinhalese state would have
a Sinhalese prime minister and the Tamil state would have a tamil prime minister, but there would be one President for the
whole nation. If after 10 years the two states wanted to split
and become two nations, then that should be done peacefully.
Jeremy, Somerset, England
What the GoSL did was very wrong and quite cowardly becuase they killed him while he was sleeping. R.I.P Thamichelvan. The tamils will carry on fighting for their homeland Tamil Eelam....May we get pease soon!
Kavi, London, UK
Sri Lanka has given a clear signal in eliminating a non-combatant, political, peace negotiator in a cowardly manner. No talks; it is all out war, stooping to the lowest levels imaginable. This may turn out to be an important juncture in this civil war (which the government propaganda calls as "war on terror") as escalation of violence from both sides is what I foresee. How the world opinion views this killing will have an impact on the future course of the war.
Bala, Notts, UK
This crime against Peace by the Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka will sonn the face the horror of thr war.
Alex, toronto, CANADA
The brutal killing conducted by the Sri Lankan govt continues. This is another evidence that the govt does not want peace. If the Sri Lankan govt ever let the world media to enter the north and east to view the actual situation, that point the entire world will know about the brutal massive ethnic cleansing conducted by the cruel Sri Lankan govt....
Asanka, Auckland,
Liberate tamils from what?
The only thing the tamil people of sri lanka need liberating form is the terrorist LTTE. They are a law unto themselves and feed of the very people they are "setting free" while enslaving and brainwashing their children into child soldiers.
Now tell me, what are they liberating the tamil people from?
May Thamilselvan rest in peace, but may peace come to us too.
3, AL, SL
LTTE is not a terrorist Organisation. They are fightinh to liberatte innocent Tamil People. You should know the difference between terrorism and freedom fighters.
IF YOU CAN GURANTEE THE SAFETY OF TAMIL CIVILIANS. I CAN DISARM tAMIL FIGHTERS.
BALA, LONDON, UK
what rubbish is burator talikng...international terrorism?
this is a fight for minotiry freedom taking place in sri lanka
you are right the sinhala government is provoking mass killing of innocent people
RajasH, Lodnon,
Beware though ... there are also rumours that Thamilselvam was not in good terms with the Tiger leader towards the latter part of his life. This can be understood by the fact that he rarely made any comments or statements to the media in the very recent past (it was one Mr. Rasiah Illatharan who did most of the talking) - so I would have an open mind about who actually took his life ... whether it's the govt. or the tigers themselves.
Chanaka, Aveiro, Portugal
A good hit in the war against international terrorism. Unfortunately it is also likely provoke further atrocities by the rebels, such as the mass killing of innocent civilians in Colombo.
