An elderly man has killed himself by programming a robot to shoot him in the head after building the machine from plans downloaded from the internet.
Francis Tovey, 81, who lived alone in Burleigh Heads on the Australian Gold Coast, was found dead in his driveway.
According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, he had been unhappy about the demands of relatives living elsewhere in Australia that he should move out of his home and into care.
Notes left by Mr Tovey — who was born in England — revealed that he had scoured the internet for plans before constructing his complex machine, which involved a jigsaw power tool and was connected to a .22 semi-automatic pistol loaded with four bullets. It could fire multiple shots once triggered remotely.
At 7am on Tuesday he set the robot up in the driveway of his £450,000 house and activated it.
His notes suggested that Mr Tovey chose to kill himself in the driveway because he knew there were workmen building a new house next door who would find his body.
The scheme worked, as carpenter Daniel Skewes heard gunshots and ran to Mr Tovey's home. "I thought I heard three shots and when we ran next door he was lying on the driveway with gunshot wounds to the head," Mr Skewes told the GCB.
A neighbour, who did not want to be named, told the newspaper that Mr Tovey had lived at his home on Gabrielle Grove since 1984. "He was a really marvellous man, an ideal neighbour and I will miss him greatly," she said.
"He was born in England, like I was, and we used to enjoy our tea together. He had visitors from England and family interstate from somewhere far away in Australia.
"There was no inkling of anything amiss, it is just very sad."

There is nothing like a suicide to get the self-righteous bible-bashers up in arms!
It is about time that ALL religious nonsense was abolished. The world would be a better place, and this old guy would be left in peace. All gods were invented by men to explain what they didn't understand.
There is no god, there is no heaven, there is no hell, life is an electro-chemical accident.
Dean Fowler, Margate, UK
To William Brown - God bless sir. You're in my prayers. Have a peaceful and blessed Easter in the love of Christ.
Gaz, UK, UK
I am almost 80, and like this poor man, understand only too well the awful loneliness of an empty home, and the social limitations that come with it. I would be very happy to begone also. I lost my wife after 60 happy years of happy and adventurous marriage.
Like some others here, my own strength to remain also comes from the Christian Faith. I just keep remembering the wonderful days God gave us. I remember the beauty and fun of her sweet nature. I know she is even happier where she is gone. I am glad that my own dreadful pain, is instead of her having it, had I gone first.
So I surrender her to Christâs sure promise, sealed by His cross and resurrection, âThat where I am there we may be also!â and I count the days to when I shall one day sweep her in my arms.
That isnât claptrap. In the hell man has made of Godâs world. it is one of the great truths apart from which all else is meaningless.
William Brown, Edinburgh, Scotland
Good for him. Of course in this politically correct socialist riddled state I live in (the UK) you could not get hold a pistol, even a .22, (well actually I could , but 'you need to know da man init') but I'm glad to see the Internet has provided a quantity of research to achieve the same ends.
Shame on all the religious moralists who think they can tell others not to do these things. Of course one of the growing religions in the UK is that of the Jedi Knights, so I will need to look up their stance on suicide.
Peter D , London, England
This poor lonely man,he was being pressured and felt no hope for his future. He had felt no other choice then the conclusion of what he felt he had to do.I took care of my dear granny in the last years of her life.My family helped me by supporting me in the decision.I only wished that this poor man had that in his life. Please all who read my statement pray for this poor soul.So he may rest in peace.God bless the poor man and his suffering.
michael travere , batonrouge,la, usa
I am not simply being cynical here when I suggest if Mr. Tovey had survivved, he would have been charged with a firearms violation.
God rest him.
Dennis, Portland OR, US
What a terrible thing to happen, he could have been looked after with good paid care in his own home. He would have been close to people who loved him, his friends who knew him, and near to everything that was familar to him..
Valerie Andrews, Wokingham, England
So it begins.
I intend to make enquiries about joining or setting up a Bladerunner unit, but for now recommend unplugging all jigsaws and rogue power tools.
Harrison, Wolverhampton,
Adam, Baltimore, USA Maryland, No confusion, the point of the robot was multiple shots, less chance of survival
Alan, Chelmsford, UK
Shame on his relatives for not agreeing to look after him in his final years. I guess he would have disturbed their routine of daytime TV and shopping.
What is the point of a family if it is not to care for each other? I sincerely hope his uncaring relatives are full of shame at their heartless actions.
frankie, Abu dhabi, UAE
I'm confused here, what was the point of building the robot? If he had the gun couldn't he have done it himself and cut out the middle man?
Adam, Baltimore, USA Maryland
There's so much to this story that we don't know. But it's clear that this gentleman wanted to go out on his own terms, whether or not he needed assisted living. For me, it's not so much that he chose to end his life, it's that the person or people who found him have to live with the image fof a man shot in the head for the rest of their lives. Perhaps future robots can programmed to use more humane methods to euthanize their masters.
Leigh, Savannah, GA
God is in control. We all have to remember that. He loves us all and hates to see sin and suffering. I think it is sad that this lonely man killed himself before it was his time. However God's grace abounds and I am sure He will show mercy on this poor man, for He loves us. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." God is good!

To Juliet-Schwartz-Martinez:
Obviously you have never had to watch a loved one suffer on-end with Alzheimers, bad heart, unknown rashes etc. It is a terriable thing to watch someone whose body just won't quit but is causing them nothing but pain. It is terrible to watch a once brilliant mind turn into a bleeding idiot. I know. My wife and I are watching my 88yr old father-in-law. He WANTS to die. He's begged me to get a hammer and beat his head in during his lucid moments. I for one will be hang-gliding off a very high cliff with no hang-glider if I ever get diagnosed with alzheimers. While I believe in God, I do not believe in tormenting people who are in a physical and mental hell because their body won't quit. Get a grip and go meet some alzheimers patients. Go to an alzheimers nursing home and do some volunteer work. Then come back and tell me what you think.
Damon Hermann, Burbank, CA
Rest easy dude. I admire your courage but wish you could have found another way. I lost a family member to suicide and you religious nuts need to give it a rest.
Dick Gazinya, Cherry Hill, NJ
Robot murder of the future is close to this. If the bible were strictly followed, it'd be the most boring place sort of like the moon at present. Hell on earth is what most see everyday randomly in the world and he just left it.
Art Bellin, Las Vegas, Nevada
"Scheming kids?" Hah! You probably don't know anything about short-term vs. long-term memory loss. He could be quite capable of building a robot, if it's similar to things he has done in the past, and yet be unable to get himself fed, cleaned, and medicated and to drive safely. Until you know more, don't pass judgement.

We all know that God is dead. Get on with it! Suicide Robots for All
Doug Kolen, Toronto, Canada
yes it's real. he will have to pay for eternity. without Christ, there is no redemption.
Joe A, Los Angeles, CA
Those who have had suicides in their families as I have, would not say any of these things. If you have not, perhaps it would be wise to think for several days before typing anything.
John, Lincoln, Nebraska
Much more of this pathetic "It says in a book written as a political maifesto 2,000 years ago that this is wrong" rubbish and I'll be building a robot myself.
Judge not lest ye thyself be judged. How'd ya like them apples?
J. Wilkes, Gloucester,
How I despise people who say things like, "Now he has to pay for eternity for a split second decision." Let me tell YOU something, Jennifer (in Federal Way, Washington): Unless you've experienced debilitating depression and hopelessness, don't presume that God is going to simply send a person to Hell because he took his own life. People who commit suicide are usually already experiencing their own personal Hell. Sometimes the emotional suffering becomes too great to bear, and God deals with that person is God's business, not yours. Frankly, any God that would just exchange one person's Hell for another isn't a God I would want anything to do with.
Jerry Jennings, Bluefield, West Virginia, USA
What a tragic waste of life.
Stephen, Vancouver, , Washington
Such a level of commitment -- very sad. I see a trend on the horizon for the elderly. I can't help but see this act as a way he thought wouldn't be a burden to his loved-ones. I don't condone suicide, but we are free to choose. He made his choice, and did so with an exercise in creativity.
JohnAlfred, Arvada, Colorado
Jennifer, "he has to pay for eternity"?!? Um...that stuff's not real...
Matt, Lancaster, NY
I doesn't matter what you think of the Bible and God. It's still His Word and He is still your God. He will judge. ALL
Stan C. Wilson, Mtn. Home, AZ
I hope that before he died he left his house to charity so his scheeming kids never got it.
Walter Nicholes, Orem, UT, USA
The last time I checked, the Bible declares that there is only one sin that would not be forgiven...blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
Are you condemned to Hell if you commit suicide? I do not know for sure, but I believe that God's grace abounds, and that if the Spirit of God is in him, then he will be saved. After all, if we were to die in a car accident, and just before we died, we were in a "road rage", which would be a sin in God's eyes, would we be condemned to hell? I don't believe so, "because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. Rom 5:20

""paying for all eternity" is simply judgmental as they know no
more than anyone about eternity but are fast to preach "da word of da lawd".
they know nothing, i know nothing, and neither do you of eternity.
nothing more personal than ones own life, it does not belong
to god, the state or anyone but that individual.
chris, arkansas,
The single, most definitive act that any human being can lay claim to is the right to suicide. The question is in the reason. At 81, he doesn't need to explain to me his reason, he can act and I am fine with that.
Of course it helps that I do not believe in hell, Dantes suicide woods or, well, the arrogant claims of religion, in general, for that matter.
Power to this guy...when I am old I am renting a Ferrari and driving it off a cliff, a really tall cliff.
dan c, stormville, NY
No doubt he has also rewritten his will so that the proceeds of the sale of his home and belongings go to charity and not his relatives. Good for him!
Michael, Edinburgh,
Wow Chris, I like your problem with "thumpers" is thier tendency to judge people, yet you judged them before anyone had said a single controversial thing. Who's the hypocrite? I hope your mouth is big enough for your feet haha
Joe, Chicago, Illinois
Now he has to pay for eternity for a split second decision. Not the best idea.
Jennifer, Federal Way, WA
A split second decision? I don't think "scoring the internet" and then building his suicide machine etc etc etc really counts as a split second decision. I think everyone deserves to choose when and how they go; this guy really knew what he wanted, methinks.

To Juliet-Schwartz-Martinez:
I'm sorry but your argument makes no sense. If God has determined our span of years then that would mean that those of us killed by others were destined to be killed by others in God's plan. If that's the case, the those doing the killing could hold no moral liability as their actions were predetermined. The fact that we supposedly have free will and DO hold murderers liable for their actions means our span of years in not determined. This applies equally to smokers...surely a person who dies of lung cancer after smoking hasn't been forced to smoke by God so they die at the right time??
Simon Murray, Manchester, UK

"Now he has to pay for eternity for a split second decision. Not the best idea." Jennifer, Federal Way, WA
Yes Jennifer, he can join J.C. in eternal damnation...., after all is there any doubt that he could have got himself off that cross?, therefore Jesus comitted suicide...., right?
P. D. Cunningham, Camden, SC/USA
To Juliet in Florida,
God has detemined our years? Am I to understand that the almighty decides who lives and dies? What a stupid concept.
People of faith also believe their God will burn them for all eternity in pain and torment if they do not tow the line. No thank you. This man excercised his free will and determined his own death. Good for him.
Brian , Gumboro, DE
He must have been catholic and wanted plausible deniability. He didn't pull the trigger so was it truly suicide? Talk amongst yourselves
Actually...if he activated the robot, then he did pull the trigger himself, thus commiting suicide.
D. Scott King, decatur, Alabama
As a Christian woman, I believe the Bible, not man's religious claptrap and assumptions. "For God sets before man no appointed time that he should appear before Him in judgment." Job 34:23 AMP. The idea we only have a set number of years came from Psa. 90. Moses was lamenting that the Israelites were dying at 70 yrs. It was not intended to refer to anyone except those under the curse during that particular 40 yrs. because they rebelled against God.
Do people go to hell when they die of a sick body? No. Then why would they go to hell when they die because of a sick mind?

Something fishy about this story. Lets wait and see what police investigations reveal.
John, County Durham, UK
Having control over one's life is one of the privileges of being an adult. God is not controlling who lives and who dies--how could he/she possibly keep track? This man deserves respect for living life on his terms and dying the same way.
Eric Berg, Plymouth, Minnesota
He built the machine to do it because one bullet from a .22, while sure to stop him from firing any more shots, would not have been sure to kill him. As a practical consideration it makes sense -- to the extent that suicide ever makes sense.

As a Christian woman, I believe that our bodies do not belong to ourselves, but to God.
The premeditated self-homicide was an immoral
act in my opinion.
I am opposed to euthanasia and abortion as well.
People of faith realise that God has already determined our span of years, and that we do not have the right to make that self determination.
Juliet Schwartz-Martinez, Miami, FL, USA
This is exactly why we should take a different view of death, which of course happens to all of us. Here's a guy that was capable of building a robot that would take his life. He knew that time was not on his side. He was going to end up in a nursing home. He decided to chose his own time of exit. Now really, what is so bad about that? We should have centers where a person can go, and after proper evaluation, slip away under proper care, and with dignity.
Steve Hollar, Lake Elsinore, CA, USA
Suicide by orgasm,
A better plan would have been to make love to young pros & leave a sizable tip to the young lady after dying of a heart attack from the final solution = Death by orgasm.
I started this plan a few years ago....but....my depression dissappeared. Go figure.
David Brandon, Boston, Ma
I was thinking about how he did it and wondered if he didn't get just a bit of final folly - not that committing suicide is anything of a folly- but to build the machine as opposed to pulling the trigger himself makes me wonder. Perhaps he like most everyone was afraid to do it himself.
I am only 56 and live alone and am fearful of aging alone too. I know some people in their 80's who still run, play golf, are surrounded by loving family and fun. But for some it must be intollerable...especially with people egging you on to give up your independence. Sad. Very sad.

Who want's to go into assisted living. They smell, the foods bad, some sexual abuse, administratiors that don't give a damn because they look to the bottom line. Maybe if we get government control out of assisted living it we would have decent elderly care

Time to ban robots.
Chad, Columbus, OH
I find it sad that you have to reduce this mans final action, to one of humour. I accept that you all see as funny. such clever dismissal of a mans life you know nothing of.
He was as we are in so many instances not required any more. Just an old man in despair, hounded by relatives sent up by americans well no change there then.
chris, kent , uk
Well,
Since the robot shot, since it was his "hand", I suggest the
robot be prosecuted. If there would be not court
for robots, I suggest to set up one so that we can
bring them to justice (my favorite phrase from TV). ...
Byuzand, London,
Clearly, the robot has been framed. I'm not the only one to cooment actions like this completely contravene The Thee Laws Of Robotics.
On a negative note, i't's clear that quite a number of people from Texas read this paper. (Just kidding, folks - you're alright! Let's give it up for the Texans.)

"How do we know the robot didn't fake the note? maybe it was murder"
I think a robot with a jigsaw hand would have a bit of trouble writing on paper.
David, Raleigh, NC, USA
Why are "they" calling "it" a robot? It sounds more like a gun hooked up to a jigssaw held together with some duct tape which I believe could be called a machine. I just thought that was kind of stupid. If he wanted to die, he lives in Australia where practically everything can kill you; the trees, the toads, the snakes, the croc's, the sharks, .........
Andrew, Salt Lake City,
Aha!The robots have slipped up and shown their hand. This is how they plan to take over the world! They promise us they will resolve complex family problems if we will only give them a gun:But once they have the gun, they force us at gunpoint to write lengthy suicide notes and then shoot us to death! This robot was brilliant!Brilliantly devious.Lesson:Do NOT talk to robots that you meet on the internet!
garmin khyle, coeurdalene, ID,usa
Douglas Adams was right when he said: "I don't think anybody would argue now that the Internet isn't becoming a major factor in our lives. However, it's very new to us. Newsreaders still feel it is worth a special and rather worrying mention if, for instance, a crime was planned by people 'over the Internet.' They don't bother to mention when criminals use the telephone or the M4, or discuss their dastardly plans 'over a cup of tea,' though each of these was new and controversial in their day."
Berty Basset, Brisbane, Australia
How do we know the robot didn't fake the note? maybe it was murder
Goth, Endicott, NY, USA
Here I was thinking that Europe had fewer dolts than America. But taking into account your reactions to Mr. Mitchell(Texas) few of you understand the subtleties sarcasm. He was referring to to Asimov's laws lagging behind "robot" technology. Not advocating stricter end of life laws, or restrictions on internet usage.
-Needless to say my worldview is duly chastened.

Sound of mind, he exercised a fundamental civil and human right. It is the hight of government arrogance to criminalize this personal decision.

The robot was clearly a terrorist. Perhaps it was a Muslim robot. I recommend rounding up all Muslim robots and deporting them to Nauru. This is why I support euthanasia for robots.
Sanjay, Boston, MA
why all the fuss? I think he went out on his own terms. And why say this death has no dignity? good for him. the reason he used the robot is to take it out of his hands once the machine was activated. he also used four shots to make sure the job was not half done.

Australia does have a good form of assistance to people to keep them at home as long as possible. Things like "Meals-on-Wheels," for the midday meal. Someone to do the housework, according to need. To be taken to and from shopping and messages, or if needed, to do this for them. Taken to and from medical appiontments. There could be more I am unaware of.

"Why would a man capable of constructing a complex machine need to be in a nursing home?" Maybe his family thought he needed to be in a facility where someone could watch him because otherwise HE MIGHT KILL HIMSELF.
John, Darien,
If he made this complex machine from scratch at 81 years old, then he was certainly able to look after himself. It seems that is the statement he was making in his method of suicide. God bless him.
Chris, watford, England
If people want to off themselves thats fine, but woldnt you rather do something wild and die in the process instead. For instance, you could do skydiving and pull real low, see how low you can pull, or you can attempt to assassinate a dictator, or climb Mt. Everest.

What is unlikely and sad is that he probably didn't leave any organ donation instructions - and none of his organs have likely been transplanted. It is amazing how many different body parts can be transplanted to people in need nowadays.
Derek, Orlando, USA / Florida
Steve, before you damn the family, remember that there are so few details. Perhaps this man was acting in a bizarre fashion - in fact, going to the trouble to build a robot to shoot oneself when you could do it yourself more easily seems very strange. There are mental problems which make a person unable to be responsible for himself but in other ways may be very clever.
Christina (RN), St. Petersburg, FL
The robot obviously should face murder charges. Then we could build an executioner robot to carry out the sentence. Sorry, this is a sad situation, but at least he's kinda famous now.

What is sad is that his family failed to value and support the elderly in their family--a man who could do what this man did has so very much to offer--and yet, it seems like he did not feel valued by anyone.
Rather than learn to savor and enjoy the good that comes with age, the culture is hell bent to hide them away and ignore them--no wonder he chose to kill himself!
What is needed is the inclusion of the elderly in life rather than another way to kill them--sticking them in a building and forgetting them is a spiritual death already--and it should not be acceptable to anyone.
Ann, Bryan/College Station, Texas

Chris from Austin: its more than a statement...have you seen the residential care facilities here in the united states, unless you have money, they are nothing to brag about. i have bad memories from seeing my great grand father in one...smells of urine are what i remember...so sad.
Nadia, LONG BEACH, CA
perhaps the relatives wanted to get their hands on that £450000 home? this man took control of his destiny and obviously having built this device, he was not a candidate for assisted living. Its a shame he didn't want to stand up to them. A real tragedy, such a creative soul lost to the world.
Bob, Albuquerque, USA, New Mexico.
Well, the law beat the technology, but there's simply no way to enforce such a law. Very sad story and I agree we should examine the way we care for our parents and grandparents (great grandparents in some cases I'm sure.)
James, Denton, Texas
The true travesty is that this man had to end his time in such a violent and impersonal manner. In a society which is fully aware that everybody dies, the elderly are forced to spend their wanning years herded into assisted living. This man, who lived a full life, only wanted his independence. That taken away, he wished to go out on his own terms. Instead of creating laws which would enable a person, be it elderly or terminally ill to end their time with family in a peaceful way, his option was a robot and a driveway, alone. Very sad. I pray that when I enter my golden years, I have a leagal option to never be a burden to family, or squander my estate on expenses incurred by assisted living vultures.
J, Philadelphia, USA
The man was 81 and "Scoured the internet for plans to build a robot"...Built said robot....and his family wanted to put him in a nursing home?!
Sounds to me as if the man was sane,Intelligent and still physically capable.
AND he went out on his own terms....good for him.
Mark, Meriden, Connecticut
Sadness all around. Why isn't there a more humane, lawful way to leave this life with dignity, without such violence and pain?
JAK, Raleigh, NC
Yeah, no doubt some law somewhere could have kept this man from killing himself. Maybe a law the filters everything one can look up on the internet. Or possibly have monitors creating psychological profiles based on internet usage, which could intervene when something is amiss. Or, maybe we should have laws against killing oneself. Oh...bother, we do have such a law. What now?
Yet another case of stupid people saying stupid things. Thank you to Robbins Mitchell of Houston, Texas.
On a positive note, it would seem that there are a good number of people in Texas reading this UK paper.
Andrew, Houston, Texas
Sorry, Robbins, but Isaac's 'Three Laws' only applied to SENTIENT robots ... that is NOT what this was ... to call this a 'robot' is a disservice - it is an AUTOMATON ... I wish Dr Kevorkian were still allowed to assist people with their RIGHT to die with dignity ...

Hmm..the earlier 'have your say' posts seem to have gone but I recall one person saying(from Texas I think?) something to the effect that this man should have been in care. According to a (local) news report, that was the reason he committed suicide.

"Why would a man capable of constructing "a complex machine" involving "jigsaw power tools" need to be in nursing home care?" by Merv, Powell, OH, US
Gee Merv ... let me think about that one for a bit.

This is a classic case of mental abuse of an senior citizen. My guess is that this man had a very brilliant and rich career. His children couldn't make the same grade as their father. Unfortunately, putting an elder in a home to leach off their fortune is a centuries old tactic. This guy had the last laugh. I hope to transferred his fortune to a charity and left the family with everything they deserved -- nothing!

Sounds like he was extremely depressed and felt he couldn't stand up to the rellies demands. A lesson for us all to keep in touch with our neighbours. With so many of us working during the day, they miss out on the social interaction which is vital to maintain healthy communities. The sad thing about this story is that he may have enjoyed living in an aged community with people his own age. So sad

all married men should own this device.
mac, New york city,
If people want to off themselves thats fine, but woldnt you rather do something wild and die in the process instead. For instance, you could do skydiving and pull real low, see how low you can pull, or you can attempt to assassinate a dictator, or climb Mt. Everest.

Obviously the man was "with it" enough to find plans, order them, get the parts, and make this contraption. Why on earth did people think he needed assited living?

I live in the same Suburb and this is the first I've heard of this. Makes me feel guilty that I've been so busy I don't even know what's gone on in my neighbourhood this week.
He went to all that trouble to end his life. Very sad.

Isaac Asimov, call your office....this is a direct violation of the "1st Law of Robotics" formulated by Asimov in his robot trilogy : 'I,Robot','The Naked Sun',and 'The Caves of Steel'...wherein a robot can never do anything to harm or kill a human being....somebody forgot to tell the yobs who wrote the plans for this online monstrosity...yet another example of the law lagging behind technology

It's very sad that this gentleman felt he had to end his life rather than go into assisted living. A statement about the how we 'care' for the elderly in our society perhaps?

was it premeditated?
