An Iranian police chief in charge of fighting vice in Tehran was jailed today for reportedly consorting in an underground brothel.
Local media reported that General Reza Zarei was jailed after being caught with six naked women at a prostitution den in the Iranian capital.
Ali Reza Jamshidi, a spokesman for Iran’s judiciary, confirmed today that Mr Zarei had been taken to jail. He refused to elaborate further about the case, however, saying it was now “in the legal stage.”
But officials, speaking anonymously, have supported the allegations, which have been extensively reported in recent weeks.
Prostitution is illegal in Iran and even talking about sex is frowned upon by the hard-line clerics ruling the country. The order to raid the alleged brothel was reportedly given directly by Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.
Mr Zarei was in charge of a program to clean cities from corruption and in recent months had reported arrests of young men and women for illicit relationships and not respecting the Islamic dress code.
State media in recent weeks reported Mr Zarei’s replacement but made no mention of his arrest or the reasons that led to his detention.
Iran’s strict Islamic rules allow little socialising between the sexes, and young Iranians have been jailed and flogged for dancing together at birthday parties.
Under Iranian law prostitution is punishable by death. But in the past decade, prostitutes are becoming more visible on Iranian streets, mainly due to economic hardships.
The rise in prostitution has led to suggestions that brothels be legalised and monitored. Some Iranians say brothels could be run according to Islamic rules, perhaps under the Shiite Muslim tradition which allows men and women to enter into “temporary marriages”, sometimes for less than 24 hours.
Most clerics, though, maintain that sex outside marriage can never be condoned by Islam. After the 1979 revolution, clerics destroyed brothels as un-Islamic and corrupting.

What about the practice of "temporary marriages" (several days in length) that is expressed in Iran and elsewhere? This provides a venue for these men to "try out the goods" of their partners with the blessing of the clerics' dictates to the masses. Sounds like cop outs to me.

I was attending a U. S. Navy school in San Diego years ago. Also going to school was a group of Saudi Arabian navy guys. They "prayed toward Mecca," and wore their robes and head rags twice a week. But every night they were going crazy out in town. They were a bunch of obnoxious drunks who tried to bed anything alive and female, and most of them had their main mama...the bigger she was, the better, it seemed to us at the time. Or maybe it was that nice looking girls would have nothing to do with these rich, egotistical hypocrites who really thought they were irresistible to women. They rarely took showers, but they doused themselves with strong cologne; you could smell their car before you saw it. I'm not making this up...we all looked at these guys as we would a group of immature perverts whose behavior worsened the more they drank. No wonder they can't operate the simplest piece of equipment back in Saudi, but need an American to sit down in their chairs in wartime.

How refreshing to see that the next country we are planning to invade has the same kind of "Do as we say, not as we do" leadership as our own country.

Interesting - I wonder, will he be lashed or stoned or tortured or hung or set on fire or be subject of another form of "honour killing"? Or is that the treatment which is very kindly reserved solely for women?
And tell me, if prostitution is punishable by death, what 's the punishment for soliciting a prostitute? Slap on the wrist, is it?
Who's he upset, I wonder, as I'm sure that this wasn't his first visit....
