CNN was forced to apologise today after a news commentator called the Chinese as a “bunch of goons and thugs”.
Jack Cafferty made the comments on April 9 on CNN’s political programme, The Situation Room, in which he also described Chinese products as "junk".
In a statement, CNN said: “It was not Mr. Cafferty’s nor CNN’s intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and we would apologise to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way.
Cafferty was offering his “strongly held” opinion of the Chinese Government, not China’s people, the company said.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry had yesterday demanded an apology, saying that Cafferty’s comments reflected his “ignorance and hostility toward China”.
Jiang Yu, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign office, said: “We are shocked by and strongly condemn the malicious attacks on the Chinese people by CNN’s Cafferty. We demand CNN and Cafferty himself take back his vile remarks and apologise to all the Chinese people.”
Beijing had already singled out CNN as among Western news outlets that produced allegedly biased coverage of violent anti-government protests in Tibet and across western China last month.
According to a transcript posted on the CNN website, the famously curmudgeonly Cafferty said: “We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart.
“So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed,” he continued. “I think they’re basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”
Numerous Chinese web postings, YouTube videos and Facebook groups have criticized Western Tibetan news coverage, including a Web site called anti-cnn.com, which was set up especially to point out alleged media bias.
CNN maintained today that it was "a network that reports the news in an objective and balanced fashion".
It added: "As part of our coverage we also employ commentators who provide robust opinions that generate debate.
“It should be noted that over many years, Jack Cafferty has expressed critical comments on many governments, including the US government and its leaders."
CNN isn't clear and direct. Should be in prime time, with a most sincere apology admitting why its wrong to say so, and fire Jack Cafferty, so proportinally giving the justice to China and Chinese people, because the damage was huge among this and other recently biased/untrue reporting against China
jesse, Cambridge,
At the end of the above news article by Alexi Mostrou quoted: It should be noted that over many years, Jack Cafferty has expressed critical comments on many governments, including the US government and its leaders."
does not excuse him in any way. hes a racist and i will forever view cnn poorly

If there wasn't imported cheap goods from china in the past decades the US economy would suffered severe inflation. You are right in China's people are making around $1/hour, now I ask you where do you think the rest of profit went? US companies. Wonder why greedy Corp don't spend $ on Inspection
Cate, sf, usa
Actually,I have watched the video on Youtube, in fact, this guy didn't say that "I was referring to Chinese government not the Chinese people or American Chinese" I didn't hear that at least. I dont know why wiki encyclopedia adds the sentences for Cafferty. But I think he is real racialist !
David, Macau SAR, China
Everybody should just chill out, this is obviously another one of CNN's publicity stunt; say a few controversial words, cause an uproar, apologies and Cafferty makes his mark.
To give Cafferty some credit, he probably had to read quite a few reviews on ''Tripadvisor' to come up with such sophisticated words, goons, thugs and junk...his boyfriend must be so proud.
Just remember, human rights is so objective, depending on where you're from, where you've been and what you think you know. Don't judge because is trendy, no matter how many text books you read, the truth only comes from your own encounter.

Of coarse there is something wrong with the Dalai Lama and his government's notorious caste systems which divides ppl into 9 classes. The western media have limited knowlege about what the life was like in Lhasa before 1950s. I think , this time, chinese government has done whatever it was necessary to retore the peace.CNN 's news are lopesided, some of them are just pure craps which TELL NO TRUTH. These clowns are trying to make fun of themselves by generating fabrications and shamelessly claimed them as first-hand news. They are only talented at backing up their own version of stories by pictures cropped from film and elsewhere!!!!
Wyn, Singapore, Singapore
I wonder what the reaction would have been if Cafferty had used this kind of bigoted, racist language about any other racial or ethnic group. Shame on him and shame on CNN for its biased and distorted reporting on China and the protests in Tibet. We need to be building bridges and trying to understand each other, not spouting off Cold War rhetoric!

Jordan, The quality of goods has very little to do with the producing manufactories. it is the responsibility of the importer to make sure substandard products are not purchased. It is the greedy American corporations that exploit US as comsumers. Junk or no junk, no one force you to buy any thing. It is the as consumers. China raise the price, the corporations here will turn to Vietnam, Laos, etc.
"Chinese Exporters should raise the price of their products instead of adding low cost ingredients (harmful). The workers should ask for higher hourly rate. The world is such an unfair playground.

To Mr. Lane Jarsonbeck,
China definitely has a lot to learn from America, especially when it comes to Freedom of Speech. However, Freedom of speech should not mean you can insult other races. China needs constructive suggestions and criticism, not racist remarks. Why would you upset a group of protesters? Just as you feel hurt by the their actions or opinions, they feel the same. They have the right to post their opinions.
Edward, Sonora, ca
Western medias really hurt we Chinese young people...Nowadays most of the young people admire the western life, western political system, their free of speech..justice...In our mind...Western world is perfect...we have a long way to go...We do understand there is some weakness in our system..
but this time...our mind changed...western is not that perfect...I see the political darkness discribed in Prison break...This time...all the Chinese unite together and fight against Western medias and some political orgnizations...

If the Chinese government are "goons and thugs"--assuming Cafferty did not really mean the Chinese people--that what would he call Western governments which led the illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003 and, before that, 12 years of economic santions that were described by two UN Assistant Secretary Generals as "genocidal"? Over one million Iraqi children have been directly or indirectly killed due to Western actions on sovereign Iraq. As well, what about Western support for Israel's military occupation and apartheid of the Palestinians? Israel runs down Palestinian protests with tanks, indisrcriminate sharpshooters and F-16 bombs, mostly supplied by America. What Israel does to the occupied Palestinians -- from stealing their land to killing over 1,000 Palestinian children since September 2000 -- is far worse than what a massive country like China is doing to the far larger population of Tibetans INSIDE China. A minority of Tibetans have been using the Olympics to gain publicity.
Larry, Toronto,
CNN should never have apologized to a group of protesters living in America unappreciative of the fact our government did not run down their protests with tanks. Cafferty is right on about the Chinese government and the crap we are now importing from that group of bullies. I refuse to buy anything from China any longer- I will pack my clothes in a garbage bag before I by a suit case laced with God knows what bio hazard.
we are America- we are entitled to our opinions- if China wants to show us their compassion for their countrymen and stop starving them or poisoning them then let them take that giant step and prove Mr. Cafferty wrong. But until that day comes realize Cafferty is right and China is controlled by a group of censorship ridden cowards and imbeciles
LANE JARSONBECK, TAMPA, FLA
If the western society is willing to pay the price they pay for those quality goods from Switzerland and Italy, China wouldn't have had made / imported so much "junk" to us. Most of the factories in China are employed by us Westerners who pays $1, yes $1 a day to the poor workers so they could make a maximum profit. Bottom line is, do not use and abuse. Give every one a chance to climb to the top; Iâm sure America has gone a long way to become the strong leader as we are today.
Lukeis , Sydney,
chinese people living in america getting mad about jack remarks about a government (china's) that lead them to flee their country? and they want an apology without realizing that those comments were aimed to the government? i've never seen people that hypocrite than those, if you don't like living in america then get out!! and stop using latin america countries (taking advantage of their corrupted governments) that give (illegal chinese) visas to america, keep up the good work jack there should be more like you out there!

Take a look at Mr. Caffery's tracking record.
"About five people tried to stop Cafferty by running after the car, waving their arms and yelling, "Hey Stop," according to the complaint, but the newsman allegedly continued through at least two red lights, while dragging the bicycle underneath the vehicle." Mr. Caffery - "I am unaware I was in an accident," he said.

Perhaps if China was running an economic model like a developed EU country like Switzerland / Italy where good quality goods production is the main emphasis, parts of the US economy would not have been so indebted with a purchasing urge into cheap and convenient goods that are currently mass produced in China. The potential upside could even lead to a slimmer and high quality driven society than the US currently is.
If all Chinese goods were junk, I wonder how much "non-junk" Mr Cafferty embraced in his own apartment or life.
There is no free lunch.
If you want quality goods, pay the price. Everything has an opportunity cost, did we all not learn?
Vivian, London, UK
Viv, London,
Chinese media called the Dalai Lama a terrorist and never apologized for that.

If Americans would pay more, then they would get their jobs back. If China gets more expensive, which it has, there is always India, Vietnam and other low wage places that Wal-mart goes to... how do you think they can offer the lowest price. In my view, unless Walmart goes, you are not getting your jobs back. And let us not forget the fact that Americans were the ones that nearly wiped out the Indigenous Indians, had slave labour, treated Chinese immigrants who built the railroads poorly and sold Opium. Maybe that was the past...how about the recent sub-prime mortgages, Enron, junk bonds, internet bubble...stuff sold to other countries' pension funds? Does it mean that the US are all crooks? Look around you, if you don't want Chinese goods and components, throw it out. Since we make junk, I would love to see you dump your car, TV and other stuff that you have. Then go buy one that has nothing to do with China. I would be interested to see how you survive...good luck.
Ivan Ting, Hong Kong,
CNN must further an apology to both the Chinese government and the entire Chinese population by revisiting the points of having a good news coverage. If you are not targeting the Chinese population and wants to talk about real human rights, then show real support by staying focused on the games and have a zero tolerance for any violent behaviors. Yes, there are limitations and restrictions in China but don't all upright moral society have their own code of restrictions? What did the freedom in Western society do? Gang problems, violences, gun issues, drug problems, formations of odd cults? And as for the leadership of the Chinese government, imagine leading over 1 billion people to change from absolute poverty into a leading industrial country in 30 years or less. Try stepping into a Chinese leader's shoe before making another comment about 'goons' and 'thugs'. Apologize when you really mean it.
George Liang, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
HEY Jack,
Your insulting CNN and yourself.

"Cafferty pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, assault and harassment after striking a cyclist on May 14, 2003. Cafferty was sentenced to a $250 fine and 70 hours of community service. Mr. Cafferty was charged with the traffic infraction, along with misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, assault and harassment, after the police said he knocked a man off a bike with his Cadillac on Ninth Avenue. The bicyclist was slightly injured. A traffic officer and several pedestrians ran after Mr. Cafferty's car, but he ran at least two red lights without stopping, according to a police complaint." from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Cafferty website

The wise mans words should do no harm. The fools words endanger the meek and defenceless. Why doesnt Jack got to China and say this stuff. And he should take Lou Dobbs with him. Then we will be sure that there is no malice but the truth. Is it ok to comment on the work of others who put themselves at risk. Come on Jack and Lou we need live reports from you on the ground in China, Iraq and Afghanistan. Jay NYC.

The so-called apology of CNN was indeed a further insult to the intelligence of the people in the street. Who are they trying to fool? There is no sincerity in the statement. They are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of those who have very little understanding of the English language.
If I were Chinese American, I would sue CNN and Jack Cafferty for its racist slander, which in US is a very serious litigation case. One lawyer in Hong Kong has already commenced a legal proceeding against Jack Cafferty. I hope more people would follow suit worldwide. If CNN is gracious enough, they should sack Jack immediately to make amend.
The statement, by any standard, and use it anywhere to any country or people is just totally unacceptable; it reflected his lack of mannerism and the respect for others people. That is simply poor taste. Interestingly, I wonder what would be the reaction of the Americans if Jack were to replace the term "Chineseâ byâ Americansâ in the same statement?
The prejudice and arrogance of western media towards the East in general and China now in particular has never been so explicit and malicious this time. CNN, BBC, the German and French media during the past three weeks, have been happily competing and echoing with each other to distort the facts, doctored the pictures and condoning the violent acts of the rioters.
What happened on March 14 2008 was a serious riot in Lhasa, Tibet where the rioters killed, burnt, robbed and beaten up innocent people. The riot were worst than the riot in London 1990, but not as serious as the riot in Los Angeles 1995 and the one in Paris 2005. In all the three cases happened in the western world, the western media were quick to condemn the violent riots. The ways that Polices in LA and Paris in restoring law and order were rather high handed at that time. But no one accused them of âcracking down peaceful demonstrationâ. What happened in Tibet on the 14th of March was quite similar to those three riots I mentioned earlier, but the treatment from the western media was a world of difference. Have you read any western media or for that matter western leaders, condemning the merciless and cruel acts of the Tibetan rioters? Not a single word. Instead they pointed the finger at the Chinese Police, who in fact were too lenient and defensive, which allowed the rioters to take advantage and lengthen the riots to three days and finally spread to other provinces of China as well.
The western media can fool us and the rest of the world in those days when CNN, BBC, Reuters, AP, etc had the monopoly of the media. Thanks to Phoenix (A Chinese CCN counterpart) and Al Jazeera and yes the internet, no one can cover a lie for long these days. We should be thankful to the few westerners (one Australian, one Canadian and one French) tourists who were at Lhasa to witness and video the happenings then. By the time when all their videos were put on YouTube, the cat was let out of the bag. The western media should run for cover for their shameful and distorted reports. But would they repent and change their attitude? I doubt.
The western media has certainly lost its creditability for its self-claiming of investigative professionism, independent and unbiased reporting. Jackâs outburst was the last straw.

I belong to 80s in China, actually, before what happened in Tebit and Olympic Torch relay, most of 80s admired the west, we thought western people were friendly and civilized because Chinese Media often report good things about West. Of course, we learn a lot about the difference between west and east from internet. We are able to judge right or wrong by ourselves.
But now, I am so disappointed to the untruthful news and prejudice from western meida. My friends, schoolmates and colleagues told me that they had same feeling as me. West hurt Chinese people deeply. This experience has changed most of 80's Chinese's mind on so-called "objective" and "fair" western media. Anyway, we won't turst the news from western media any more.
The lies and fabricated stories from the west just make All Chinese People more united more clear, that's why recently tons of Chinese added "LOVE" China to their MSN name.
Wang Shuang, Shanghai , China
If CNN acknowledges that Caffery is a person with "strong opinion" and he often emits opinionated comments, then just tell the the public that "We are a network dedicted to featuring bias and please criticize everything we report".
It is hypocritical for CNN to exclusively hire such biased and ignorant commentators, yet maintains it's a network that "reports the news in an objective and balanced fashion".

CNN did not apologize but attack. In their view, they did not say anything wrong on 04/09, but the protesting viewers had a problem in interpreting them. CNN 04/16 insult added to their commentator's insult+injury inflicted on a quarter of the population in the global village.
Cinian Durbin, Ames, IA
If you compare what the US has been doing in Iraq and Guantanomo then I can see that the USA may seem hypocritical, yet China has mischaracterized and tried to vilify the Dalai Lama who is a beloved Buddhist leader by many throughout the world. The Tibetan people where not oppressed by a class of bourgeois monks as the Chinesse goverment , the Tibetan people dearly loved their monks and religion and it has been the utmost horrible propaganda and ridiculous lies by the Chinesse government. I sympathize with the many oppressed chinesse Christians and others. The history of China under Mao has many dark spots, I think more people died and starved under Mao than any time in the history of the world. I hope that conditions in China will improve for the common man and that it's oppressive police state government will soften as it is bad for everyone, and as an American I am sorry for the Iraq war and I hope conditions in our country will improve as things have not been good.
Lars Giles, Framingham, MA
The statement issued by CNN was barely an apology, since they 'apologise to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way'.
How else would the public interpret his blunt and xenophobic comments towards chinese people/government?
If you bare in mind that Jack Cafferty (or anyone who feels the same way) has a choice NOT to consume any products/services from China. Or Maybe the US government should stop all imports from China altogether?!
Carmen Kan, London, London
It's really funny to hear an american, being one of the MOST HATED nation in the whole world, to use human rights as a weapon to attack other people who don't agree with them. Take a look at what's happening in Iraq, 1.2 Million Iraqs have been killed yet all your media has to say is more than 4000 soldiers are dead since the war. Who are you to feel and say your system is better than others' .
Nancy Pelosy says "If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China and the Chinese in Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak out on human rights" .
I say, "If freedom-loving Chinese people throughout the world do not speak out against western bias against China and the ignorant westerners keep on turning a bind eye on what's really happening in China, that's when we TURLY have lost all moral authority to speak out on human rights "
John, Beijing, China
funny to hear Chinese officials lecturing Western media on press independence and objectivity, given their appalling record...
Btw, this "journey of harmony" (huh??) has become quite farcical, hasn't it?
Jean Dupont, Versailles,
The recent biased reporting on China/Tibet issues by CNN and many other western media are cultivating misunderstanding and hatred among the people and nations in the world.
These behaviours are extremely irresponsible and harmul for the world. The ones that are going to pay high price for these stupid behaviours are our children and grandchildren!!!
So let us protect our later generations from the biased report and lies from CNN, BBC, ... ...
Jack Cafferty should be fired immediately!!!
Otherwise CNN should be banned.
At least the Chinese government shall ban CNN in China to protect the dignity of 1.3 billion Chinese people!

I was at Ann Arbor for a year to study for my M.S.E. in Engineering degree long time ago. All the people I met there were nice. The Chairman of the Department was extremely helpful to me.
I am surprised by the racial remark from Jack Cafferty. I feel that USA and Canada should work together for world peace and harmony among all human races. He should apologize!

Joseph S.,
I think if you make a judgement about a country and its people, simpling based on "all you have to do is read the Amnesty International reports to look at the MANY instances of human rights violations," the sole message you conveyed is your IGNORANCE.
Look at what America did in Iraq, in Guantelama Bay....what a good example of human rights.
maple, New York, U.S.A.
Finally CNN offers its apologies for its unbalanced and insulting way of its news coverage of nations deemed by the channel to be "unfriendly" towards the USA. Hopefully the CNN would change its attitude towards Venezuela, which is a democracy way more liberal than that of the USA. Its only sin is to channel the oil rent into social programs and not to let it disappear to the consumer countries and oil transnationals through low oil prices and taxes. In Venezuela the medias are even more pro USA and anti Chavez government than the US medias and still US medias, such as CNN portrait the country as a dictatorship. This is extremely unfair and one is tempted to ask wether the CNN pursues balanced news coverage or if the only criterion on which a news report from this country is judged is wether it strengthens the totally far out myth of the countrys elected and very popular president as a dictator or not. Probably it is too much to hope for balanced news coverage from CNN in the future
erick, caracas, Venezuela
I did not see any apology from CNN. It simply said that if you felt insulted then we are sorry.
I do not think Cafferty should apologize - he is simply not capable of doing that. He did not direct his comments toward the Chinese government. He is too much of a racist to be able to make such a distinction.
CNN please stopped whitewash Jack Cafferty's comments. His racist comments were directed towards the more than 1.3 billion Chinese people and should be condemned.
E Jiang, Monterey Park, California, USA
Jack Cafferty should apologize to no one! Way to go!
Sean, London,
CNN, along with the rest of western media is disgustingly biased. Even this article! Phrases like "forced to apologize" and "alleged" media bias are suggesting that Chinese are touchy and overreacting.
Can you imagine what the backlash would have been if the insult had been directed to African Americans or the Hispanic community? CNN learned a lesson that although Chinese don't usually make big protests about insulting remarks, it doesn't mean we will take it lying down.
Of course, I realize the media has blatant biases about all sorts of issues, not just on Tibet and China (So unfair! It was initially a race riot targeting Han Chinese). They like to say what we like to hear, create figures we love to love and figures we love to hate. Many people like me have completely lost faith in media in general.
Jenny , RANCHO PALOS VERDES, ca
CNN has gone down in objectiveness and rational, their style of reporting is borderline sensationalism. Would we see this style of reporting on the BBC? At the same time, CNN should before broadcasting commentators such as Jack to state that his opinions do not represent or reflect the opinions of CNN. Having grew up in Hong Kong and US, it's sad that CNN felt they had to apologize to a govn't, because news network should uphold freedom of press, but they should have explained before this type of shows broadcast that opinions of the commentator don't reflect and represent the station.
Cathy W, Berkeley, USA
I feel that Jack Cafferty needs to "retire" (better word term), because he betray the CNN spirit, some people come and some people need to go is very normal, especially for CNN,
give some fresh face and fresh air to CNN, otherwise, CNN will loss the media track, and fewer and fewer people watch and read CNN......
Steve, California,
What China is lack of today is the smooth skills to play the international games in politics, media, democracy, and public relation like America. Once China finish its learning curve in a few more years (yes, a few more years), this hyperpower will dominate international games including CNN. Probably, CNN will become a subsidiary of "Chinese News Network" soon.
This type debate and anger is, not doubt, part of this growth for not only China, but the rest of the world, which may have limited knowledge about China's transition, although they, including little Jack, think they knew it as 50 years ago. In this case, he, an outspoken commentator, just did his crazy job to raise his profile and got a better American media rating before his see God.
David, Houston, TX
Rob, re: anecdotes about abuse of authority in China, I can provide some of my own: When I was a high school teacher in America, one of my 9th graders was violently raped by a police officer. He told her that he'd "find marijuana on her" if she talked about it. When a man rapes a young girl, you expect him to do hard time, right? This cop quit and was hired the very next day in the neighboring town. Where's the media? Where's the justice?
Rob, wherever people have power, some abuse it. China has problems, but every time I go back, China has improved by leaps and bounds. The Chinese are richer and more free every year. When I go back to America or the UK, they're a little poorer and a little less free.
When you were in China, Rob, did you see machine gun toting, jackbooted stormtroopers patrolling the streets? Did you see CCTV cameras on every street corner? Did innocent foreign guests have to worry they'll be shot in the head on the subway by the police? How about in London or NYC?
Bob, Niigata, Japan
There is a persistent negative portrayal of China amongst Western and particularly US media that passes for journalistic impartiality. My own take of this is when you apply western democracies and moral viewpoints on many issues, the inevitable outcome of journalistic impartiality can only paint China in a negative light. Middle Americans with their couch-potato foreign policy (as Obama painted not as eloquently as he would have liked) runs with this image and as a result China is demonized and becomes the source of all American woes from ethical values to unemployment based on rationalizations similar to those that allowed the KKK to flourish.
But what has the global China ever done to world to deserve it's vilification? Are they a source of terrorism? Do they start wars over oil and cover it with lies? From Japan, Korea to Vietnam whatever their intentions, haven't Asians more to despise America than vice versa? The difference lies is in local attitudes and media perception.
Mike, Hong Kong, China
People like Cafferty, Limbaugh, and "King" O'Riley contribute nothing to society and international relations. I also think that anyone who believes that these individuals are in fact "speaking the truth" should really visit the countries or regions that they're criticising.
Ironically, we have always been relatively respectful towards the Rome that is Washington DC. You never see CCTV or any of the TV networks in Hong Kong nor China saying anything remotely like what Cafferty said. I mean, please, show some respect.
Adrian , Hong Kong,
Would CNN have apologized to Hitler or Fidel Castro or the former USSR?

I have been living in the US for nearly 10 years and have travelled all over the world. Believe it or not, Americans (and Canadians too) are more friendly and inclusive people than many other parts of the world.. There will always be people like Mr. Cafftety who makes a living by making extreme comments. I would encourage people in China not to turn it against American people because some individuals like Mr. Cafftety.

Hope oneday he can say such comments in mainland China and nobody will ask him to apologize.

T Hunter, this issue is nothing related to free media. As a journalist, he should be able to distinguish fair opinion &r criticism from vicious slander & libel. Judging from what Mr. Cafferty said, he is obviously racist and hostile to Chinese.
We welcome fair opinion & criticism based on facts. "Dont be too CNN".

Let's see what will happen in the US, a so-called "righteous" and "fair" society, after someone saying such insulting and malicious words to another country.
Out of question, this behaviour will be hated by all Americans if it involved no China.
Obviously, Cafferty's words is toward all Chinese people, who was called a "bunch of goons and thugs". But strangely CNN denies this to some degree in its apology and seems wanna help Cafferty get out of troubles.
I believe Cafferty will not be punished internally at all by CNN. And he will soon come back to his position, warmthly welcomed by the people who hold the same view as him.
Now, you will find a real CNN, in a a so-called "righteous" and "fair" society of America.

It's always a matter of scale, a country of 50 mill - 1 bill is always gonna be hard to get right. Yes the Chinese system is an unfair one where the government has so unfair rights for themselves. In the US the government are all wealthy connected people, not much difference there!
Brian , Melbourne,
It's kind of funny to see the Communist News Network (CNN) apologize to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for simply telling the truth (unusual for CNN at any time).
No one need apologize for stating the truth.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
Peace and understanding! Jack Cafferty malicious attack on China and the Chinese people should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
I am immersely proud of the achivements China has attained on the social, economic and technical field. Globalisation should bring nations and people together, not separating them. The media has a responsibilty to this end.
Han Teck-Fong, Stockholm, Sweden
Chinese Exporters should raise the price of their products instead of adding low cost ingredients (harmful). The workers should ask for higher hourly rate. The world is such an unfair playground.
Jordan, Palo Alto, USA
Learn some Chinese if you really want to know China and its people. The bigger part of translated Chinese writing is misleading, because the Chinese language is so advanced after thousands of years of refinement and the translation of it is so difficult.
If you can speak and read Chinese language you can know that China used to be a country of poetry. All the leaders MUST be able to write poetry in the most strict rhymes and meters. And Chinese people are peaceful and hard-working.
Think twice before you criticize anyone else. Because if you judge someone before you know them, the condemned may be yourself.
Welcome to China. If you want to be a friend, we have delicious food and wine. If you want to be an enemy we have our love of our country and our ancesters' spirits guiding our brave yougn men and women.
Welcome to China. The world is smaller than you think. The gap between us is much smaller than you think. We are nicer than you think.
Hou Zhiyong, Beijing,
Jack shld buy a air ticket to China and stay there for a few months to savour the teeming humanity that is china, iso of lobbing salvos from his armchair. The trouble is pple like him are so parochial in outlook and so insular in his little well that he has failed to catch up with modern developments on the ground.
chan wc, singapore, singapore
I am not critizing Mr. Cafferty to have a point of view. However, as a professional, he should know that CCN should not be the platform for expressing such a view. Also he had simplied all issues of "Chinese junk product", lost of job etc. One cannot blame a government alone for all these problems. Should it be the importers' and exporters' responsibilities on quality control? After all, US corporations are pocketting a handsome profit and a good number of consumers are satisfied. The case of Tibet is even more complicated. The main issue is: Mr. Cafferty's comments indicated hatred and racism, therefore CNN need to apology and he need to be fired as America will not tolerate hatred, racist or discriminatory remarks spread on public media
Alice, San Francisco, CA
From the transcript, I can't see that chinese gov is the only thing that Jack intended to criticize - I see it an insult to chinese people - and only ignorant people would do such thing. No people is better than the other, but this may be a difficult fact for some people, such as Jack, to accept. And what's the point to boycott chinese goods? If they are not with good quality, just simply not to buy it as not to buy a bad product, regardless its originating place. Don't raise it as a political issue.
Craig, Toronto,
The world is changing. Remember China, or you call THE MIDDLE KINGDOM (you might think it's a bad name, actually it's the opposite) has been the most advanced and CIVILIZED country for many thousands of years. Our number of dynasties is bigger than your number of presidents.
Hey, WESTERN guys, Chinese money value is on the rise, and your green backs is becoming PAPER. Western brands took many years to achieve that standard and Chinese brands are only emerging.
Chinese people are getting more and more educated and their working skills are getting higher and higher. Chinese workers are demanding higher salaries and Chinese factories are developing their own technologies to produce produts of higher quality in all aspects.
Wait and see, in the near future you wont be able to afford a MADE IN CHINA. Remember Japanese cars? A few years back you thought they were juck. Now? History is a funny thing. It often repeat itself, If you don't know the past you won't know where you are going.
Hou Zhiyong, Beijing,
The Chinese government either cannot understand the difference between them and the Chinese people, or they have managed to convince the Chinese citizens that there is no difference. When we insult Chinese party officials and other leaders, this is in no way directed at the individual worker who is working to survive. I believe the Chinese government is trying to cling to a Mao-era belief that the unelected leadership somehow is "the people". Unbelievable.
donald, tejas, USA/TX
Americans should really focus more on domestic issues over foreign policies at this moment. We don't have anyone else to blame for the current economic recession and the lost trillions of dollars over the Iraqi war. The globalization of economy is happening despite of the public opinion. We also outsource customer service of many Fortune 500 companies to countries like India. Should we blame India for taking away these jobs from us? We should be grateful there are cheaper labor in other parts of the world so we can forge the competitive edge of innovation and technology. We should be grateful there are huge markets like China out there, so we can keep exporting our goods while our domestic economy goes into a recession.
JayZ, San Francisco, CA, US
How many of the people who replied on this has actually been to China?
Can any of you comment on Boston, New York City, San Francisco, Dallas, without having been there?
And regard to the protest....Bush gets a riot welcome wherever he goes. That's where American leadership has gone down the toilet.
Kin, Hong Kong, China
Spence, I lived there for six years. That was long enough to see past the veneer. The party members bully ordinary citizens mercilessly behind the scenes. They are a class of untouchable masters, who always get their way. I know of one incident where a vicious assault was captured on a security video. The victim obtained it from the building managers and provided it to the PSB. The agressor was a Communist Party member. The police said"There is no video, go home before we put you in jail". I wonder how many rapes (I know of one)and murders, beyond the usual thievery, go unchallanged there. If you want to support this caste then that's your choice, but I think you're being blind. I think "thugs" is on the weak side. The victims there must remain silent, but here we can speak. Look beyond the veneer crafted from lies and violence, and you will see a different picture. This odious regime should never have been awarded the games in the first place.
Rob, Vancouver, Canada
I for one fully support the Chinese and this Olympic games - I spent a year living in China - and have to say its a great nation with lovely people - Comparing it to Nazi Germany is just crazy - western ignorance as demonstrated in recent days is horrible to witness. Jack was right to apologize and I think the CNN + BBC should also offer an apology for their propoganda job.
Spence, London, UK
Part II:
When We Tried Communism, You hated us for being Communists
When We embrace Capitalism, You hate us for being Capitalists.
When We have a Billion People, You said we were destroying the planet.
When We are tried limited our numbers, You said It was human rights abuse.
When We were Poor, You think we are dogs.
When We Loan you cash, You blame us for your debts.
When We build our industries, You called us Polluters.
When we made you consumer goods, You blame us for global warming.
When We buy oil, You called that exploitation and Genocide.
When You fight for oil, You called that Liberation.
When We were lost in Chaos and Rampage, You wanted Rules of Law for us.
When We uphold law and order against Violence, You called that Violating Human Rights.
When We were silent, You said you want us to have Free Speech.
When We were silent no more, You say we were Brainwashed-Xenophobics.
Jane, New York, ny
Somebody put it better than I did:
When We were called Sick man of Asia, We were called The Yellow Peril.
When We are billed to be the next Superpower, We are called The China Threat.
When We were closed our doors, You smuggled Opium to Open Markets.
When We embrace Freed Trade, You blame us for Taking Away Your Jobs.
When We were falling apart, You marched in your troops and wanted your "fair share".
China was broken into pieces. And You killed, burned, maimed and looted,
Just go to the British Museum and the French Museum, you will find the proof.
Never again, we said, We stood up and fought for our survival.
And piece by piece we put our nation together again,
All of a sudden, "Free Tibet" you screamed, "it was an invasion!"
Never mind that those who shouted caused the original suffering and pain.
Jane, New York, NY
I have been living in the US for many years. I have been blessed to have met and make many American friends, as I know that most Americans are honest, nice and friendly people. Unfortunately, like in any other country, there will always be some arrogant, close minded people, like the kind of Jack Cafferty and Adolf Hitler.
From the interview, We can see that Mr. Caffety's sense of supremacy is based on ignorance and lack of respect for other people and their history.
There is no doubt that Jack's comments was aimed at Chinese people. At least, he should be honest and stand by what he said. The way that CNN handled this incident is foolish and laughable.
I agree that indeed, there are some Chinese products that lack good quality. But if Jack doesn't like those junks, he is not forced to buy, just walk away and let the market decide.
Dennis Chu, Monterey Park, CA, USA.
dennis chu, Monterey Park, CA/USA
American investment, under American management--all those low quality staff manufactored at American invested factories in China. Chinese workers are only CHEAP labours for American investors. in this case, you should blame on your business men. for them, important is profit not your life.
thugs and goons? Americans are. you are in Iraq robbering their oil, you provide weapon to every countries in the world to make them killing each other; you pretend weak your dollars to make all of the world paying your debt; you are the one who trained Taliban and gave them the weapon.....Cafferty, why don't you call your government goons and thugs? it is racism comments from my point of view.
loui, prescot, uk
I'm sorry to say I haven't seen any comments here...including Cafferty's... that show the least understanding of how products are imported into the US from China (or anywhere else).
Just one key point is that the products are made for American companies according to American specifications. For example, Mattel toys are designed in the US, and then the designs are sent to China for production. Mattel tried to blame China because some toys had lead paint, which of course Mattel didn't design into the toys, but the much bigger problems was industrial strength magnets n the toys that WERE in the American designs.
In fact, the CEO of Mattel went to China to apologize for creating the incorrect impression that China was to blame for everything.
Them's the facts. I studied this very carefully because I was teaching about this very issue to Chinese graduate students last Fall.
WW, Fayetteville, GA
I agree with Cafferty's comments, recognizing the "dollar a month" as hyperbole. Ironically the junk imported from China is high quality compared to what manufacturers sell within their borders. Industry within China has to import its infrastructure in order to run a reliable operation. With little quality control over domestic products and relatively low control over exports a lot of junk is slipping into markets around the world. With the recent melamine and lead scandals, a little ire is well-deserved.
As for the "goons and thugs", the Chinese government is still a dictatorship with a poor human rights record and little recognition for individual freedom as an innate human right. Their demand for an apology from a single commentator is proof of their backwards, childish petulance.
Zolodoco, Omaha, NE
I've always thought that Jack Cafferty is a waste of space with his rude and puerile comments. Why on earth CNN has to drop to the level of Fox and talk radio beats me.
As for toxic toys, it has been known for at least 40 years that plastic toys from China could contain lead. I analysed some at that time. Surely it's the fault of greedy US corporations that their products, made in China, do not have adequate quality control.
Archie, Sarasota,
It's sad to see so many people been brainwashed by CNN etc about China. Take a trip to China to see how it has changed. Why don't you think, see before you believe?
Jerry, Libertyville, US
So once again the American media bows down to China. But so what - all the rest of corporate America has broken its collective back doing the same thing.
Cafferty is right as are the protesters that show up everywhere that the Bejing Olypic torch appears.
Gerard Roney, San Jose, CA
West, Fort Benning, GA, USA
"See ... Rise of Nazi Germany 1933-1938 for justification of the above arguement.". I saw so MANY west people are saying this, arrogantly. This makes me sick!!!. Communist chinese goverment existed for over 50 years. I do see the goverment is improving towards moderlized direction and doing more things for the people (although huge improvement still needed). If one compare it to Nazi, I will argue with him still next Olympics.
Bob Li , Oxford, UK
the world's biggest problem is that people often take one thing as a whole.
I find many people here are spewing something full of hostility, like many chinese people, they are rage over everything they don't like in they behavior pattern without employ they brain to think, i know many americanized people.
china has it's problem, but at least today, everything is getting better.. i understand why you western guys show so much hatred towards chinese people, because there is no way for you to hear directly the sound of chinese people.. there is a barrier, that is formed by language, cultural and the society structure and political system...
i am not saying i like chinese government and this suffocating system, but that's what it is. We crave for democracy, respect of individual, and free, and at least part of chinese young people (include me) believe that many things here are making progress.. we are not living in a Mao's age any more, please update youself, people!
we want to be free,
pyx, guangzhou, china
hattadol, I have bought numerous products made in China too; none of them have broken down - computers, iPhone, even my nice big cushy sofa. Of course, you do get what you pay for - I'd probably give 5 pence sandals a miss, wherever they were made.
Jeff, Manchester,
Jack commented that china exports junks to USA. I think the problem is that USA prefers to buy junks. No buy, then no sell. Correct?
Ming, Houston,
I think Jack hit the nail on the head. Yes...I will agree that his comments should NOT have been directed at the people of China, but specifically he should have called out the PRoC government. That was his only mistake. The only reason the apology was made was because of business concerns...nothing more. I'm sure Jack will address this, and I hope he clarifies and redirects his remarks in order for the Chinese people not to take offense. Let's be honest...when your government has to have a special unit traipse behind the Olympic torch as it makes it's way round the world to keep protesters from bringing attention to the injustices against the people of Tibet...when then...I think Jack has some very valid points.
Ray II, Mechanicsville, VA
What he said was in no way offensive. If you LISTEN and READ what he said, then you would know he was referring toward the Chinese Government and not the citizens. And what is funny is that it comes from a government which blocks internet sites that cover the violence in Tibet, censor news and web content.
Corporations such TIME Warner which owns CNN, have folded to the demands of the Chinese government because of how much China financially has America by the tail. So for that $200 dollar, 50 inch plasma flat screen TV at Wall Mart, Americans continue to sell their soul to corrupt China and lose our freedoms.
Adam, Bridgewater, New Jersey
To Sean from NJ, I agree that Cafferty spoke honestly, and CNN shouldn't have apologized, but you're dead wrong on Lou Dobbs. Dobbs has been the lone voice speaking out against China's abuses, as well as on the outsourcing of jobs, and the violations of Davis Bacon (corporate and business interests seeking to violate wage standards protections) and on so many issues. American citizens have civil rights, and human rights considerations, no matter how inconvenient you find that fact.
China is one large embarassment, it is an authoritarian, brutal and backward regime. It's people ought to be ashamed of a society that believes poisoning others, including it's own people is acceptable. Those Chinese who rationalize such things are no different than those who rationalized slavery. I refuse to buy anything made in China, it might take a little effort, but it's worth it. I won't support scum.
Jenny, Grand Rapids, MI, US
Ah, silencing the media, another fine export of the Communist Party of China. CNN should have told them to go jump in a lake.
Time to boycott the Olympics and Chinese products, me thinks.
Shaun Smith, Toronto, Canada
Hello U S of A,
You don't have to buy any and all Chinese Goods and Services. If not for these low cost goods, your inflation rate is going to be much higher. The Toys companies will face hardships; your arrow shirts will be more popular and costlier. Wake up America! The World is changing, U can come on board or stay on the shore.
Don, Peace River, Canada
What I wanna say is: Has Mr Cafferty been to China before? Has he ever tried to know the development of our country? We, our Chinese are showing our friendship and peaceful will to the people all over the world through the torch relay of the 2008 Olympic Games.
Mr Cafferty, why didn't you critic the one who destroy the torch but our friendly people? If some day, someone said the same thing about your country, what would you feel? I feel so sorry about your words.
Jacqueline Wong , Suzhou, China
Jack hit it right and shouldn't apologize. He isn't referring to the Chinese people as goons and thugs, but of their government. Majority of the products they ship over here is garbage. Walmart is the big sellout ever since Sam Walton died. And for Ellen in Toronto, Canadians should think their lucky butts they're bordered with the US. I can't think of anything imported from Canada that isn't of US orgin. We like warmer climates anyway, Mexico has much nicer people and country side.
Bryant, Cincinnati, USA
Jack Cafferty is right. I agree with him to a certain extend. China exports a lot of junk. I bought some of Chineseâs brand appliances. None of them last long. On top of that no warranty. However, I never have any problem with Western brand made in China though. In 2004 I bought a microwave, a GE made in China. It broke 4 months after. I returned it and got a new one. At least Western brand has a warranty, and is more responsible to its products.
All in All, He doesnât need to apologize.
Hattadol, Bangkok, Thailand
There is a lot of corruption in China and that is where the controls break down for product safety, etc... So criticism against the Chinese government is warranted for that.
However, the furor over Tibet by most of the world outside of China is a joke. There was little news on Tibet before the riots and now it has become a focal point of the media/public when there are far more serious human rights crimes being committed in Africa and the Middle East (too many nations to list).
Many comments here by Americans are ridiculous when they harp about human rights and freedom. They are clueless about the actions of their own government and military, yet have no problem blaming a convenient foreign target for their troubles.
Benjamin, Canada,
No one think it's unfair to be critical for chinese government, however, for Jack to say chinese people a bunch of thugs and goons for the past 50 years it's truely offending. If he represented CNN, definitely it's not objective and balanced. After reading so many supportive comments, no wonder he will have his job. If he said something even less negative about Isreal, he will be gone.
sam, seattle, usa
I bet Jack, as a commentator, should have known that Chinese people are very sensitive about remarks on China, though it's clear that his remarks are made irresponsibly, because he forgot that China is STILL A DEVELOPING country.
Though I'm happy that China is being compared with DEVELOPED countries like USA, etc a lot, and that everyone is holding a much higher expectation for it, yet I definately feel and believe that the benefits that China has brought to the rest of the world, like producing cheap products, should not be neglected.
Again, it's not the products that are cheap, but the large population that make the labour cheap, and correspondingly the products.... I'm just sad to learn that our products are just labeled as 'junk' by him.
This is a world full of differences. But if we only see what the others doesn't have, what is the outcome?
Brian, Shanghai, China
Jack Cafferty MUST apologize to all the chinese people as his comments was very subjective and contained bias, he has not practised in a professional way. If he didn't mean to offend Chinese people, ( but actually he did), he still need to be responsible for what he said. Think about it in this way,If some one killed another person but he said I did not mean to kill him, could that be an excuse for not being punished by law????.
Once again, Jack Cafferty must apologize to all Chinese people in person, not by CNN.
Zhe Min, Boston, MA
CNN need to apology and Jack Cafferty need to be fired. That is American's standard way of dealing with those who made hatred, racist or discriminatory remarks publicly.Jack Cafferty can have his racist opinion, but he has no rights to use CNN, and get paid to spread his hatred on public media! Talking about truth, isn't that
Jeremiah Wright just aroused rage by talking some of his opinion, and also truth, about America? This what Obama said: âHad the reverend not retired and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldnât have felt comfortable staying there at the church,â
CNN, if JC don't get fired, we'll boycott CNN!
eric , New York,
The whole thing is a joke. Dalai Lama, apparently a former slaveholder, now become a leading human right fighter. Are we really THAT stupid??????
Michael, MIssissauga, Canada
If you'd like to know more about Tibet, please do not lose sight of the fact that the Tibetans in exile and their supporters have consistently exaggerated the human rights abuses that have taken place in Tibet, as Barry Sautman and others have convincingly demonstrated. Such exaggerations from the Tibetan community in exile come as no surprise though. As Michael Parenti says: âFor the rich lamas and lords, the Communist intervention was a calamity. Most of them fled abroad, as did the Dalai Lama himself, who was assisted in his flight by the CIA⦠throughout the 1960s, the Tibetan exile community was secretly pocketing $1.7 million a year from the CIA, according to documents released by the State Department in 1998. ' For more details, you can search CIA & Tibet from internet.
Keith Gary, Toronto,
Jack Cafferty is about the only person on CNN that is believable. I watch him daily and skip all of Wolf's nonsense. What he said is true and we all know it. Except that 20% of Americans who think this administration is doing a good job.
LYnn, Los Angeles , calif
This is what CNN is. Without biases and lies, CNN wouldn't be CNN. The network and its commentators and political analysts remanined a mentality of colonial ear. It so apologized is only because the China piece of pie is too big to let it go. What sense it makes for anyone to ask apology from a habitual liar?
RC, Boston, USA
Who cares if an oppressive government is offended? I can tell by his statement that he meant the Communist Party and not the laborers that makes dangerous and toxic toys or inferior quality goods imported by the United States. Any governement that uses force, fear, and intimidation to maintain order should be characterized as "goons and thugs". See Tiananmen Square 1989 or Rise of Nazi Germany 1933-1938 for justification of the above arguement.
West, Fort Benning, GA, USA
Now understand why China should ban CNN in China. It is not Mr. Jack Cafferty to comment how China should be governed. Mr. Cafferty is a newsman, so why can't he just act like one, reporting a balance news.
Hanjaya, Singapore, Singapore
Cafferty is an embarassment. His childish rants get him the attention he craves and since poor CNN is being eaten alive by FOXnews in the ratings Cafferty has job security.
JL Ronish, seattle , usa
Frankly, I agree with Mr. Cafferty. The problem the Chinese have with his statements is that they are true. China is getting so much bad press right now, they are doing everything they can to silence this type of opposition.
This years Olympics are going to be a joke. I sincerely hope it has the fewest viewers of any Olympics so the corporations that are playing by China's media rules end up loosing alot of money.
Boycott China!
Victor Ortiz, Bellevue, WA, USA
After the photos and videos I saw on Wikileaks of the Tibet carnage, I am in agreement with Caferty. The Chinese GOVERNMENT is a bunch of goons and thugs. They must release Tibet from China's oppression. Keep to your position Caferty.
JAG, Rancho cordova, USA
Swap the name China with the name Iran or Cuba. Any apologies now?
What a joke. It's all about the money as our MBA corporate sellouts collude with filthy pols to bring us poisoned pet food and childrens' toys. Because, you know, they really need two homes on each coast.
Meanwhile, the profits go straight to the Chinese military, which will clean our clocks for us one day.
Sad, sad, sad.
Logan Waters, Middletown, NJ USA
Jack Cafferty didn't say anything he needs to apologize for. He clarified that he meant the Chinese government. The Chinese government's human rights crimes could fill a phone book, (although one could also argue that the US has some issues too) and their quality control on their products is frightening. Jack is a commentator. In this country he has the right to speak. If he was in China, the would be torturing him as we speak. This isn't a racism issue, God there are so many real instances of racism in this world, its offensive that people are trying to label him with that tag. Grow Up!!
JLN, Boston, MA
Jack Cafferty, whoever he is, is entitled to his personal opinions and can safely keep them to himself.
It is CNN, as a responsible news network, who should keep such verminous sneese from public air.
David, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
No apology necessary! He was simply stating the truth. the chinese government are bullies and are the biggest violators of human rights in this world. Their products are junk and cause harm, death and illness to our children and everyone who eat theirchemical laced foods.
dara, new york, ny,usa
To Sara,
Have you any idea the volume of toys, furniture, etc. that have been pulled from us shelves due to lead quality? Or even the dental casts of teeth that contain mercury and causing health related problems?
The irony of China's actions in 1989, its treatment of Taiwan, and its treatment of Tibet when compared to the honor it is allowed by hosting the Olympics is vast.
America is not perfect. One only has to look how the Mormon compound is playing out in Texas to realise that. Yet, Cafferty has a right to his opinion as do all people in the United States. Especially, because it is an informed opinion. When hundreds of childrens toys are pulled because they may be poisoning those very children who play with them you should expect a backlash. Not expect people to simply accept that endangerment with no ill opinion,
Mark Sutton, Dallas, Texas
Mr Cafferty had it right all along! We need more people like him to stand up and say what is going on isn't right.Sugar coating things will not help China's people.
Here's a question:Why do we look away from the things China does to it's people?
Michael, Kannapolis, U.S.A.
if cnn needs to apologize about anyone on their network, it's certainly not cafferty. lou dobbs is an atrocity who spews hateful rheteric on a daily basis, thoroughly embarassing himself, his network, the media, and all americans. cnn, if you're listening, muzzle your rabid attack dog! maybe you can send him to mexico on permanent assignment...
sean ranieri, union city, nj
Wow....my freedom of speech is truly gone and the true power of china over the U.S.A is becoming more apparent.
For shame cnn, to back down like this, you lost me as a viewer, I will watch MSNBC Ffrom now on.
China does import garbage, china's goverment are a bunch of goons and thugs(our goverment is also), NEVER BE AFRAID OF TELLING THE TRUTH!
John, new york, new york
He needs to retire, period!
G, Wilminton, USA
I have watched CNN for years. My experience has been that in order to increase its viewership, CNN has engaged with those Star-like people, who often draw people's attention because of their opinionated ideas or weird style.
Cafferty is a case in point of being cynical. Yes, he severely criticizes the US government on many issues. That's true. But that criticism doesn't guarantee him the right to slander the Chinese people around the whole world. He acted simply out of stupidity.
CNN's apology certainly lacks a sense of sincerity. But the real punishment against CNN lies not in their apology. If their reporters -- any of them -- go to China to do an interview, they will be questioned about their integrity and honesty. Still remember their doctored pictures to show China's brutality? It's outrageous!
Ken, Arlington, USA/VA
i dont think jack should apologize, cause hes telling the truth. China only show the good side of themself, but always aviod the bad side. the junk china make are junks! i am here to say China skills and workers are all under knowledge. why does china need taiwan this much? cause Taiwan has the skills and knowledge, which the chinese dont have. China has nothing, economy is up but thats only the outside, if all foregin organsation took out their investment from china, china will be back into the ages where they believe MAO president is a GOD. let me make this clear china stock market is high not because they are good its because foregin organsation made it high. If chinese government wont change their attitude towards comment made against them. sooner or later china will have no economy, but india will beat them by 1000000 time. the only reason why china is strong is because of what????? or should i say LIFE IF CHeap. YES, they are strong because LIFE IS CHEAP not wroth a PENNY!
Wu jaing yue, Walnut, CA
From the postings on every single Chinese website that the Chinese government allows to exist, I see why Cafferty is right in his way of describing the Chinese people. As a Chinese, I apologize for the ignorance of my people, but it was the result of nearly 60 years of brainwashing on two generations. It may take another 60 years, but please be patient and believe me, we Chinese are nice most of the times.
Cui Yi-Min, Beijing, China
CNN had no reason to apologize for Cafferty's comments about the Chinese government. Thuggery is their stock in trade. It uses bullying, imprisonment and even judicial killing to achieve its political goals and quell dissent.
While Cafferty is incorrect in generalizing Chinese-made products as junk - I personally own many that are of a very fine quality - his description of the repressive government of China is spot on. His comments were not aimed at the Chinese people, but at its government. In the United States, taking aim at and calling out repressive regimes - especially our current regime - is OUR stock in trade.
Greg, Asheville, North Carolina, USA
This is definately not a sincere apology, they are still playing the words. Cafferty is a racist, it's a shame for CNN to hire people like this. I don't understand how USA would allow such obvious racial discriminational words to be spread, regardless on a major media or not. It's a shame on America's democracy. Canada is much better in terms of acceptance of other cultures.
Ellen, Toronto, Canada
An apology to the people of China is fine. Worthless, but fine. I have been to China three times, and have found the Chinese people, for the most part, gracious, and giving. One must remember they have a communist government, and political correctness is a must. Kind of like America. We are not without heavy handed leaders. We have a government that will use force against it's own citizens, shoot and burn them out. I am planning on retireing in China, as I see little difference iin our countries governments. We should fix ourselves and let the Chinese be Chinese, bring our jobs home, readopt the constitution, and be Americans. China will do what they want, and no one can stop them. America is too weak. America has no leadership, and none on the horizon. Perhaps Jack should address that.
Mark Hudson, Pahrump, Nevada, U.S.A.
I don't think what CNN responded is an apology. Cafferty needs to be honest and face what he has said, or he is still a coward like how he was in 2003 when he committed a hit-and-run. How does a news agency count on him for an "objective and balanced" view?
A coward is always a coward; a liar is always a liar.

I agree with EVERYTHING Jack says. I can't believe how oppressive China is - all you have to do is read the Amnesty International reports to look at the MANY instances of human rights violations. They are so oppressive to peaceful people like the Dalai Lama and Tibet - what is wrong with their government? Thank you Jack for speaking out. It's too bad that other news organizations are simply too scared to speak out against the Chinese government.

I do not think that Mr. Cafferty has just made a big mistake. He really needs to learn how to respect other countries and people. I am not sure if he is suitable for the job he is having now with CNN.

I think Jack Cafferty should apologize for his comments towards China. Cuz he didn't know the truth about China before making bad comments. Maybe he was just heard a little. it's unfair. so if the USA face the same situation that a main media in other countries described the USA as a junk, how will the government of the united state and American people feel? So, Jack made a big mistake!
