The new Pope chose the name Benedict because he wishes to be a man of "reconciliation and peace", the Archbishop of Westminster disclosed tonight.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, preaching at Westminster cathedral at a Mass for the election of the new Pope, described the momentous atmosphere in the conclave that chose Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as Pope.
He said that the new pontiff wished to be like Pope Benedict XV, who was known as a man of reconciliation and peace. He also wished to invoke the intercession of St Benedict, patron of Europe, "that his own ministry will be one of prayerful contemplation of the work of God and building of His kingdom in our world".
The Cardinal said that the new Pope had pledged to him that he would pray for all the people of England and Wales, not just Catholics.
"After the Pope is elected and has accepted his office, one by one, each Cardinal goes up and kisses his ring," said Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor. "When I did so, I said to him that he would have the prayers, the support and the loyalty of all the Catholics in England and Wales. The Holy Father responded 'Please assure all of the people of England and Wales of my warmest greetings and my prayers'."
