Two unmanned Georgian spy drones 'shot down' over Abkhazia

SUKHUMI The Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia said that it had shot down two unmanned Georgian spy drones over its territory yesterday but Georgia denied that there had been any flights in the area.

The Black Sea region of Abkhazia is the focus of mounting tension between Russia - which backs the separatists who threw off Georgian rule after a war in the 1990s - and Georgia's pro-Western leadership. Western diplomats fear that tensions could spill over into large-scale conflict.

Sergei Shamba, the Abkhazian Foreign Minister, said: “The drone flights are a demonstration of Georgia's aggressive intentions towards Abkhazia.”

The shooting-down of a Georgian drone last month over Abkhazia sparked a bitter row between Russia and Georgia. The Kremlin sent extra peacekeeping troops to Abkhazia last week to counter what it called preparations by Tbilisi for a military attack. The Georgian Government has denied making any such plans.
