Deadly bombing on eve of poll

Batticaloa A bomb tore through a café in Ampara, eastern Sri Lanka, killing 11 people and wounding 29. Tamil Tiger rebels were blamed for the attack on the eve of crucial provincial elections meant to be a final step in restoring normality to the Eastern Province. (AP)

Mystery illness seals off train

Toronto Canadian authorities quarantined a train in the town of Foleyet, northern Ontario after a woman in her 60s died and several other people suffered a mystery flu-like illness. (AP)

Manson ranch to be dug up again

Independence The Barker Ranch in Death Valley where Charles Manson and his group hid after their 1969 killing spree, will be closed this month to look for human remains, officials said. (AP)

Museums send treasures home

Rome Sixteen artefacts in the Cleveland Museum of Art in the US that were allegedly looted or smuggled will be returned to Italy. Officials have struck similar deals with two other museums. (AP)

US offers to help fight killer virus

Beijing The US has offered to help China to fight an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease that has killed 34 children, including 22 in Anhui province. There is no vaccine for it. (AP)
