Troops kill two in pay protest
CONAKRY Two people were killed and dozens were wounded as troops rampaged through the capital of the West African state of Guinea in protest at not being paid, witnesses said. Some soldiers have not been paid since 1996. (AFP)
Football losers go on rampage
ALGIERS The Algerian city of Oran was deserted after two days of riots following the local football team’s relegation. Thousands of young fans reacted angrily, ransacking buildings, vandalising cinemas and looting shops. (AFP)
Briton faces jail for Greek demo
SALONIKA A Briton was sentenced in Greece to eight and a half years in prison for taking part in violence at an EU summit protest in 2003, court officials said. Simon Chapman was not present, and he and three others will appeal. (AFP)
Baby in freezer
FREUDENSTADT A woman in southwestern Germany was arrested on suspicion of killing her newborn baby by putting it in a freezer, police said. The 20-year-old woman from Horb-am-Neckar, near Stuttgart, said the child had died. (AFP)
Belgrade rule
BELGRADE Serbian nationalists and allies of the late President Milosevic signed a coalition agreement to form the city government, probably ensuring that an extreme right-wing politician will become the capital’s mayor. (AP)
Mosque arson arrests
TOULOUSE Eight people, some of them French soldiers, have been arrested over an arson attack on a mosque in Colomier, near Toulouse, last month, prosecutors said. A fire was started in the entrance and a prayer room was wrecked. (AFP)
Nuclear celebrations
ISLAMABAD Hundreds of Pakistanis rallied to mark the tenth anniversary of the country’s first nuclear weapons test. Pakistan detonated five nuclear devices underground in 1998, two weeks after India conducted similar tests. (Reuters)
Relief crew
WASHINGTON A lavatory pump will be delivered to the International Space Station after its zero-gravity lavatory stopped working properly. The crew of the Nasa space shuttle Discovery will carry out other repairs to the station on Monday. (Reuters)
Vietnam apology
WELLINGTON New Zealand’s Government made a formal apology to its Vietnam War veterans for failing to recognise their war service properly and not supporting hundreds who suffered from the effects of the defoliant Agent Orange. (AP)
Bomber loses hands
PARIS A French postman claiming to belong to a group that blows up road speed traps had his hands blown off by a homemade bomb, officials said. The man, aged 29, suffered life-threatening injuries at his flat in Clichy-la-Garenne. (AFP)
£3m diamond sold
HONG KONG A 101.27carat diamond the size of a squash ball has fetched £3.1 million at Christie’s. It is internally flawless and one of only three colourless diamonds above a hundred carats ever to be auctioned. The buyer is anonymous. (Reuters)
