9/11 mastermind killed Daniel Pearl
An FBI analysis of the video showing the beheading of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter, has revealed that the knife was wielded by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of September 11, writes Christina Lamb.

The analysis was carried out after Mohammed, who was captured in Pakistan in March 2003, boasted to US interrogators that he was behind the abduction and killing of the 38-year-old American.

FBI agents compared the hands carrying the knife in the gruesome video with those of America’s highest- level Al-Qaeda captive and found that he did indeed personally slit Pearl’s throat.

“It’s horrific to watch but there is no doubt that they were the same hands,” said a senior official.

Pearl was abducted in Karachi in January 2002 by kidnappers whose demands included the supply of F16 fighter jets to Pakistan by the United States. His wife Mariane was pregnant with their son at the time.

When he was abducted, Pearl was thought to have been investigating Richard Reid, the British shoe- bomber. But the disclosure of Mohammed’s involvement suggests Pearl may have been trailing the Al-Qaeda operations chief.
