A French paratrooper who fired his assault rifle into a crowd of spectators during a hostage-freeing exercise will face charges of grave negligence, prosecutors said yesterday.
A three-year-old boy and his parents were among the 15 civilians and two military personnel who were wounded in the shooting, which took place during an open day at the 3rd Marine Parachutist Regiment barracks on Sunday afternoon.
The boy was shot in the heart and arm and five other people were seriously wounded. Doctors who operated on the wounded visitors said it was fortunate that no one had been killed in the incident.
President Sarkozy, who visited the injured, promised punishment for any failures that led the sergeant to shoot live ammunition at the audience during a military exercise in the southwestern city of Carcassonne.
“This shows absolutely unacceptable negligence,” Mr Sarkozy said. “I will ensure a rapid and severe reaction. The whole chain \ will have to explain itself, not just one person.”
Prosecutors said that the sergeant, a veteran of an elite regiment who had an unblemished record, had mistakenly inserted a magazine of live rounds in his standard assault weapon after emptying a first magazine of blanks in the exercise, which he was conducting with seven other soldiers.
“We were watching an exercise and it happened when there was only about five minutes to go,” a witness said. “There were seven or eight soldiers with guns, with one of them in the middle of the public pretending to be a terrorist.”
Another witness, who was among the hundreds of visitors watching the demonstration of hostage-taking, said: “Suddenly people were falling — we thought it was part of the exercise, and then we saw blood. We saw a child of about 3 years really messed up, that really struck us. There were loads of children.”
Another member of the crowd described how he went to the aid of a child as bullets continued to whistle through the air.
“It’s a miracle that I wasn’t hit. I could hear them crackling where my head was just as I bent down,” he said.
As panic swept through the crowd an officer shouted a ceasefire order through loudspeakers and the exercise was halted.
Hervé Morin, the Defence Minister, said that he could not understand how an experienced soldier could confuse blanks and real rounds because the two munitions had different appearances and were packed into different-coloured magazines.

Victor Cedar - the British SA80 A2 rifle is one of the most reliable and accurate weapons in the world. The original A1 version had problems, and was thus corrected. In nearly 3 years in the Army, I've only had two stoppages, and both were caused by me failing to forward assist the cocking handle.

the British troops on Parade are always kitted out with LIVE ammunition
and those are real sharp bayonets fitted on the end as well.
its a suprise that any live ammunition was not handed in to the master at arms before the French Parade, sloppy accounting of issued arms and munitions.

Agreed Barry. I did 10 yrs in Br Army and to date my regiment has had more casualties due to US fire than Gulf War 1 and 2, Iraq and Afgh combined - & its been to those half a dozen times now.....Have also served with Fr army and more impressed with them than US sometimes
Nick Teal, villars,
Well Victor, it's a shame that doesn't happen in the USA, then a few more of your civilians might still be alive!
Peter Nuttall, Leeds, UK
Could not happen in the UK as the British guns are so unreliable & will jam after first round.

France's pathetic military is only made to look good by Belgium, its "mini-me-minion." For that matter, when taken together, France, Belgium and Germany couldn't do much on today's battlefields - noted for being far from home and highly complex. Only the UK and US have the minerals!
Paul, Los Angeles, CA, United States
Gosh Ryan, I didn't mean to hurt anybodys feelings or anything. Actually the French are great soldiers.
Jerry, seattle, usa
atleast the french actually have guns to fire, not like they will ever use them in a combat situation!
Ross, scotland,
Jerry may be dismissive of the French, but being equally dismissive of the US isn't helpful; one person's sad mistake hardly amounts to a national policy issue. Jerry: France has no monopoly on moronic military behavior... maybe you should check our record before opening your mouth about France's.

Error on Terror... Army barracks are eager and enthusiastic to show they're useful, since many should be closed soon...
Gandes, praz-les-marais,
Unlike the Americans who have plenty of experience with guns - Columbine, any ''friendly fire'' incident.
Chris, Maesteg, Wales
Jerry, that's a bit rich considering the amount of "friendly fire" incidents caused by US troops.
AndyUK, London, England
I was not even aware that the French still had an armed military. That is too bad.
Claude, Paris, France
Jerry...With your country's abysmal "friendly fire" record, I wouldn't be quite so quick to comment on others' abilities.
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario,
The French should not be allowed to handle real guns. They have never had any luck with them.
