Crashing jet hits house
Bogotá A US cargo aircraft taking flowers to Miami crashed into a house soon after take-off, killing three people in Colombia. The Boeing 747, owned by Kalitta Air, a Michigan-based company, fell on the home 12 miles (20km) west of Bogotá after reporting an engine fire. An adult and two children who lived in the house were killed when it was hit by one of the engines. The eight crew were injured. (AFP)
Fresh head for Hitler waxwork
Berlin Madame Tussauds is to repair a waxwork of Hitler that a visitor beheaded at the opening of its new Berlin branch at the weekend. “The figure will be repaired, so that it can be reintegrated into the display,” the museum said. (AP)
Opera singer breaks legs
Geneva Joan Sutherland, 81, the soprano, is recovering after breaking both legs in a fall at her Swiss home. The accident occurred while the Australian singer was picking flowers in the garden and lost her balance. (AP)
Soldier shoots four comrades
Moscow A Russian soldier shot dead three of his comrades and wounded another before committing suicide, the Defence Ministry reported. The private was stationed at a base near the port of Vladivostok. (AFP)
China rule curbs 400m births
Beijing China has more than 100 million single-child families since introducing rules in the late 1970s that limit many couples to only one child, Xinhua, the state news agency, said. The rule has prevented an estimated 400 million births. (AP)
Tanker pipe falls short of task
Nicosia A ship carrying Greek water to ease a drought in Cyprus was unable to pump it ashore because the connecting pipe was three metres too short. It was the first of several shipments of water from Greece to the island. (Reuters)
