Bombers strike at four towns

Laredo Four bombs exploded in northern Spain, including one outside a bank, causing damage but no injuries, officials said. A caller had given a warning, saying that he was speaking for Basque separatists. The first detonated outside a bank in the town of Getxo, damaging a cash dispenser and breaking windows. Others were in the Basque town of Muskiz, and Laredo and Noja on the Cantabrian coast. (AP)

Climbers freed by separatists

Ankara Three German climbers kidnapped by Kurdistan Workers’ Party rebels on July 8 while on an expedition to Mount Ararat were released unharmed, as the Turkish Army closed in on their captors, the Foreign Ministry said. (AFP)

Nine face being stoned to death

Tehran Eight women and a man have been sentenced to death by stoning in Iran, defence lawyers said. The women, aged 27 to 43, were found guilty of incest, adultery or prostitution, and the man, 50, of illegal sex with a student. (Reuters)

New law hits below the belt

Lynwood The Chicago suburb of Lynwood has passed a law imposing a $25 (£12.50) fine on anyone showing 3in (7.6cm) or more of their underwear in public. The American Civil Liberties Union says it is aimed at “men of colour”. (AP)
