Bangkok Samak Sundaravej, Thailand’s former Prime Minister, has accepted his party’s nomination to return to office — only two days after the Constitutional Court removed him for hosting a cookery show on commercial television while in office.
“Tomorrow, the People Power Party and other coalition parties will reelect Samak as the Prime Minister,” Kudeb Saikrachang, the PPP spokesman said.
The decision will put Mr Samak back on a collision course with protesters hell-bent on stopping him.
The People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), whose protesters are occupying the seat of national government in Bangkok, said that they would not accept Mr Samak, who also faced opposition from within his own party before today’s parliamentary vote.
A PPP faction with 70 MPs said that it would abstain from the vote because Mr Samak’s return would exacerbate weeks of political tension.
Mr Samak is accused by the PAD of being a puppet for Thaksin Shinawatra, the ousted Prime Minister. (Reuters)
