On average, crocodiles kill one person a year in Australia. Most attacks happen between late September and January when crocodiles are hungry after the dry season and are preparing to breed.
June 2008
Plumber, Tom Bartlett, from Cairns fought off a 5m saltwater crocodile with a palm frond and escaped with an injured knee which required surgery.
April 2008
Wendy Peterick,36, survived a vicious attack thanks to her husband who rescued her by poking the crocodile in the eyes with his fingers.
Mrs Petherick fought the 2.5m croc who attacked her as she washed her face in a creek in Litchfield National Park. She called for help from her 39-year-old husband Norm Moreen, who was swimming nearby. He leapt on the animal's head and jabbed it in the eyes. Mrs Petherick said: "We got away because we both fought back. If my husband hadn't been there, I would have been killed."
March 2008
A woman who lived through an attack in 1985 was eventually killed by a snake. Ecologist Val Plumwood, 67, was attacked by a crocodile while bird-watching from a canoe in Kakadu in 1985. When the crocodile appeared, she had climbed on to an overhanging branch before the reptile jumped up and wrenched her into the water. It then let her go before attacking her again as she sought refuge in the tree. Ironically, she was found dead on her property, near Braidwood, having suffered a fatal snake attack.
February 2007
A man on the run from the police survived a crocodile attack while swimming across the Daly River in Darwin.
Cassian Domoo, 40, was bitten on the head and on the hand by the crocodile. "I just ran down the river and tried to swim across," Mr Domoo said. "I turned around and saw the croc. It tried to bite me, just like a dog. So I poked his eye out."
