A Dutch filmmaker who made a controversial film about violence against women in Islamic societies, has today been assassinated in Amsterdam.
Police said that Theo van Gogh, 47, had been stabbed and shot near a park in the centre of the city.
A man was arrested at the scene after an exchange of gunfire in which a police officer was seriously injured. The suspect was wounded in the leg and remains in police custody.
Radio Netherlands reported that the suspect had stuck a pamphlet to Van Gogh's chest before killing him.
The film maker's great, great grandfather, also Theo van Gogh, was the brother of the painter Vincent van Gogh.
Van Gogh had received death threats over a short film, Submission, which told the story of a Muslim woman forced into a violent marriage, raped by a relative and punished for adultery.
He had made the film with the Dutch Conservative MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who had escaped an arranged marriage 12 years ago. The pair were reportedly under police protection after the airing of the film on Dutch national television earlier this year.
Van Gogh's career as a filmmaker, writer and actor, spanned more than 20 years and he was in the process of finishing off a movie about the assassination of the popular right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn.
