Spanish authorities have arrested 16 suspected Islamic extremists, including five people whom the Interior Ministry has linked to last year’s Madrid train bombings.
The other 11 suspects are alleged to be connected with the radical group Ansa al-Islam, which is thought to have links with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who has been blamed for many of the bloodiest attacks in Iraq.
More than 500 police were mobilised for a series of co-ordinated raids across Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Andalucia, as well as in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, north of Morocco.
Ten bombs exploded aboard four packed commuter trains during the morning rush hour on March 11, 2004, killing 191 people and injuring 1,900 in Spain’s worst ever terrorist attack.
A total of 26 people have been jailed over the train bombings, and more than 70 others have been questioned and released as the inquiry continues.
Yesterday authorities in Germany held three Iraqis suspected of backing Ansar al-Islam, although it was not clear if there was any connection with the Spanish arrests.
