Several Arab and Uzbek fighters were among 28 people killed in the deadliest US drone strike yet in western Pakistan’s tribal areas.
Two Hellfire missiles fired by an unmanned Predator struck three compounds in the village of Shrawangai Nazarkhel in South Waziristan, a stronghold of Baitullah Mehsud, the region’s most notorious militant commander.
Mr Mehsud, who is leading a regional Taleban insurgency, has been accused of planning the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister, of harbouring al-Qaeda fighters and of training suicide bombers. Saturday’s attack, in which most of the dead were identified as foreign fighters, was the third since President Obama took office. Remotely piloted US aircraft have launched more than 30 attacks over the past year.
Elsewhere in the country the Pakistani Taleban called a localised ten-day ceasefire in response to peace talks. In the northwest Swat Valley, officials were in talks with Islamist leaders on a deal in which elements of Sharia would be imposed in Malakand division, which includes Swat, and militants would disarm.
If finalised, the accord would face criticism from the US for caving in to Islamists who have destroyed more than 200 girls’ schools and forced women to stay indoors.
