A British man and his wife are believed to have been among the 22 people killed in the Bali bomb blasts.
Colin Zwolinski, the British-born manager of a mining company in Australia, and his wife Fiona, a nurse, were holidaying with their two sons on the island when they are believed to have been hit by the full force of one of the three blasts.
Formal identification of the couple from the steel-producing town in Newcastle, on the coast of New South Wales, has yet to be completed but a statement from Tunnel Mining, the company established by Mr Zwolinski, said they "are expecting the worst".
As the massive investigation into the attacks continued, Indonesian police today revealed that they had been given the first name of one the three suicide bombers, following the widespread publication of photographs of their severed heads.
Abdul Madjid, the police chief commissioner in Solo, a city on the main island of Java, said the man was only identified as Gareng.
Mr Zwolinski is said to have held dual British and Australian nationality. The couple, both in their mid-40s, had travelled to Bali with friends to chaperone their teenage sons Isaac and Ben on a surfing holiday.
The couple were having dinner in a restaurant at Jimbaran beach on Saturday when suicide bombers struck. Officials are waiting for the results of DNA tests to confirm their identities.
A spokesman for Mr Zwolinski's company said: "At this moment, we do not have formal confirmation of Colin and Fiona’s death, although we are expecting the worst. We will provide a press release if or when we have confirmation. Fortunately, their children are safe and back home in Newcastle."
A Foreign Office spokeswoman in London said that confirmation was expected tomorrow, adding: "Although the coroner is working today, a public holiday in Bali, we don’t expect the results until tomorrow, but it is highly probable that a Briton/dual national has died."
At least 22 people died and more than 100 were injured when three suicide bombers simultaneously targeted restaurants in Jimbayan Beach and Kuta, to the south of the island, on Saturday.
Although nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks, suspicion immediately fell on the Islamic group Jemaah Islamiyah.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said two Australians were confirmed dead, and there were "grave concerns" for another two, not seen since the Jimbaran Bay attack.
Officials yesterday released a list of 25 people who were unaccounted for, including 12 Indonesians, two Americans, two Japanese and two Danish.
The Foreign Office has already confirmed two Britons were injured, one slightly and one seriously. The latter, a woman who has dual British and Australian citizenship, was flown to Australia for treatment.
The police investigation has focused on an the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah network, blamed for a string of attacks in Indonesia, including nightclub bombings in Bali three years ago that killed 202, most of them foreign tourists.
Several countries, including the United States and Australia, have warned in recent days of possible new attacks in Indonesia.
In travel advice issued today, New Zealand's Foreign Ministry said: "We continue to receive information that attacks are in the advanced stages of planning."
