Nobel winners unite in peace bid
More than sixty Nobel laureates have written to President Bush urging him to push hard for a tough UN mandate for peacekeepers to be sent to the Darfur region of Sudan.

The letter said that Washington should urge the deployment of a UN force under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which would provide a mandate to dismantle militia and protect civilians there. Tens of thousands of people have been killed during three years of conflict.

“Darfur will not stabilise unless the peacekeeping force has the tools to do the job,” the letter, signed by peace prize winners as well as laureates in chemistry, physics, medicine and economics, said.

A Chapter 7 resolution makes UN Council actions legally binding when there is a threat to international peace and security.

Letters were also sent to the leaders of the African Union, the European Union, the Organisation of Islamic Conference and several UN Security Council ambassadors. The African Union has expressed “deep regret” that two Darfur rebel factions missed a deadline it set to sign a peace deal aimed at ending the conflict. (Reuters)
