Baghdad Saddam Hussein’s wife and eldest daughter are among 41 people on the Iraqi Government’s most wanted list, announced yesterday. Sajida Khairallah Tulfah Sajida is believed to be living in Qatar, and her daughter, Raghad, lives in Jordan.
Meanwhile, the body of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born former leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, has been buried at a secret location in Baghdad. (AP)
UN force hopes
Banjul, Gambia Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary-General, held talks with President al-Bashir of Sudan and said afterwards that he hoped that UN peacekeepers would eventually be deployed to the Darfur region. The President has been opposed to replacing an African Union force with UN troops. (AP)
Tigers train troops
Colombo Tamil Tiger rebels have trained 6,000 civilians in armed combat, a pro-rebel report said, indicating that the insurgents were preparing for all-out war with Sri Lankan military forces. The 2002 ceasefire between the rebels and the Government has been deteriorating, with more than 700 killed since April. (AP)
US aid warning
Kathmandu The United States has threatened to cut off millions of dollars in aid to Nepal if communist rebels joined the proposed interim government without first giving up their weapons. America provides Nepal with $45 million (£24 million) a year for development, education and health. (AP)
Intrusive ship
Tokyo A Chinese ship defied warnings from the Japanese coastguard and conducted a survey in waters near small disputed islands that lie between Japan’s southern island of Okinawa and Taiwan, violating a bilateral accord. The coastguard asked the Foreign Ministry to protest. (AP)
119 nails in belly
Hanoi Surgeons found 119 nails in a 43-year-old woman suffering from severe pain in the stomach. “After having her stomach X-rayed, we found a stack of strange objects,” a doctor at the hospital in Can Tho City said. Each nail was about 3in long and many were rusty. The woman did not suffer any major injuries. (AP)
Priest stabbed
Ankara A 74-year-old French priest has been stabbed in the port of Samsun, the third attack in Turkey on a Roman Catholic priest in five months. Pierre Brunissen is recovering from knife-wounds to a hip and leg. Police were said to have arrested a mentally ill man who had accused him of proselytizing. (AP)
Malaria hope
Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, have found that astemizol, an antihistamine, can kill the Plasmodium falciparum parasite that causes malaria. The findings are published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
