The singer Kylie Minogue has been told that her six-month treatment for breast cancer has been successful.
Publicists for the star confirmed today that latest test results showed there had been no recurrence of the disease, with which she was diagnosed in May.
They were keen to play down reports that the 37-year-old had been given the all clear, saying that she will still require daily radiotherapy for at least six months to prevent tumours from returning.
The Sun today reported that the singer had travelled from Paris, where she had been undergoing chemotherapy after a partial mastectomy, to be with her family in Melbourne. Her brother Brendan, a television cameraman, will become a father in March.
Kylie’s publicist said today: "On May 21st last year Kylie’s surgeon announced that the operation to remove the cancer was successful.
"Since that time Kylie has been undergoing treatments to prevent a return of the cancer. Kylie remains keen to return to work and in particular to re-schedule the Showgirl Tour of Australia.
"Fortunately we are still able to say we have received no news of a re-occurrence of the cancer; however at this point in time Kylie’s treatments are continuing."
A friend of the singer, the Australian music guru Molly Meldrum, told Australia’s 7 Network: "I had heard just before I left to go overseas that in fact Kylie was coming back to Australia, to Melbourne, to spend time with the family and that basically the chemo had finished."
Mr Meldrum told GMTV: "The treatment was quite severe and probably Kylie was a lot sicker than most of us thought. But now, obviously, she is coming home for a little while and, as I say, the chemo is finished and I guess that she is now well on her way to recovery."
Dr Thomas Stuttaford, the Times medical expert, said that the reports were encouraging, but that it was too soon to say whether the singer had beaten cancer.
He told Times Online: "Nobody is certain of the treatment that Kylie Minogue has had. Every report, however, suggests that she has had the very latest treatment and many of those reports have suggested she has had herceptin.
"The care with which she has been treated and, if it was called for, the availability of herceptin will have materially affected the outcome.
"Nobody so early in a case of carcinoma of the breast could be certain that, although they can find no evidence of a tumour now, it will not recur. That is the bad news.
"The good news, however, is the extraordinarily good results for modern treatment of cancer of the breast.
"I should have thought that they would now sit back and see what happens. It's a question of keeping fingers crossed."
Kylie's diagnosis with early-stage breast cancer was first reported in May. The remainder of her Showgirl world tour was immediately postponed. Publicists for the singer said they were hopeful that the dates would be rescheduled for this year.
