10,000 reservists get Iraq attack call-up

THE Government is planning to mobilise 10,000 reservists to ensure that war-strength units are ready for an attack on Iraq early next year.

The call-up is the largest since contingency plans were laid for a possible land offensive against the Serbs in Kosovo in 1999. Its size gives the clearest signal of the substantial military contribution the Government is expected to offer to a US-led coalition if diplomacy fails to remove President Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction.

The Government is expected to make a Commons statement before the call-up is enforced under the Reserves Forces Act. However, the Ministry of Defence said there were no plans for a political announcement this week.

It was also reported last night that the Government would issue a Queen’s Order, ensuring that no employer, or reservist, could block the call-up. The move would give defence chiefs the right to call up more reservists than would normally be available.

Diplomatic efforts were continuing to reach agreement on a UN Security Council resolution to back up the return of weapons inspectors to Iraq.
