Politicians held in police sweep

DHAKA Security forces have arrested at least 14 political leaders, including nine former ministers, in predawn raids, according to official reports.

They included Nazmul Huda, the most recent communications minister, of the outgoing Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Mohammed Nasim, the former home minister, from the main opposition Awami League.

No reason was given for the arrests, but a spokesman for the Armed Forces said that a statement was imminent.

The arrests were the most high-profile since Bangladesh’s military-backed interim government began a crackdown on corruption, underworld-linked politicians and criminals.

At least 33,000 people have been arrested since a state of emergency was declared on January 11, police said last week. ( AFP)
