A suspected suicide bomber has blown himself up after opening fire at Islamabad International airport, killing himself and injuring at least three people, one seriously, reports say.

The attacker was on foot in the parking area of the airport when he was stopped by a security guard, according to police. After a brief exchange of fire, the man detonated his bomb, seriously injuring the security guard and damaging several cars, according Mohammed Farooq, a police official.

AFP reported that the man had been heading towards the VIP section of the airport and injured two guards when he opened fire. Akram Khan, an airport security official, told the news agency that the attacker then wounded at least another three people upon blowing himself up. Reuters reported that a total of three people had been wounded.

Aftab Khan Sherpao, the Interior Minister, confirmed there had been a suicide bombing and that one security official was seriously wounded.
