An Italian journalist who was held hostage by the Taleban for two weeks described how he was forced to watch as his captors beheaded his Afghan driver.
Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who was released yesterday, told how he feared that he would also be killed after seeing the brutal execution.
“I can still see it now," he wrote in La Repubblica. “The [Taleban] commander issued his death sentence in the name of Islam. He said we were all spies and we had to die. [The translator] is crying. I don’t understand. I ask him what they said and he, in tears, says ’they are going to kill us’.
“I get off my knees. Four young men grab the driver and shove his face into the sand. They cut his throat and continue until they have cut his whole head.
“He is not able to make a gasp. They clean the knife on his tunic. They tie his severed head to his body. They bring it [the body and head] to the river and let it go,” he wrote.
The Taleban captured Mr Mastrogiacomo, whom they accused of spying, in the southern province of Helmand on March 4, along with an Afghan translator and driver.
The Taleban said that he was freed in exchange for up to five insurgent leaders. His translator is still being held.
Angry relatives of the driver gathered outside the Italian-run hospital in Lashkar Gah, where Mr Mastrogiacomo was recovering overnight, in protest at the news of the swap.
"The government is making sacrifice for foreigners, but not for an Afghan," Delbar Jan, an uncle told AFP news agency.
Mr Mastrogiacomo, giving an interview to state-run Italian television station RAl, told how the hostages were shackled and forced to walk miles through the baking desert to 15 different prisons. He said they were kept in cells "as small as sheep pens".
He said that he was hit on his back and head with an AK47 and his captors threatened to kill him.
“The Taliban started saying, ’in the name of Islam, we sentence you to death', " Mr Mastrogiacomo said. "I was shaking. Obviously I thought ’it’s my turn now.' "
Mr Mastrogiacomo was due to arrive in Kabul later today, where he will leave for Italy shortly afterwards, Afghan officials said.

The Taliban use religion as a pretext for power and suppression of any oppostion to this power, they bend and twist things justifying everything in the name of religion. Islam is not the monster here, it's the Taliban.
Who created this monster? Ironically it was the CIA who helped form, armed, funded and supported the Muhajeddin groups to fight the Soviets, these groups went on to form todays Taliban.
I very much agree they must fought and freedom to the long suffering Afghan people restored. Some of the Islamaphobic comments here referring to Hitler choosing the wrong relegion, nuking the region are frankly sickening and puts such individuals in the same light as monstorous groups
such as the Taliban.

I was going to ignore this, but the 2 "pro taleban" statements pushed me over the edge. The Taleban will not respect us if we respect them. We did that and they violated that respect by harboring Bin Laden before and after the 9/11 attacks. They will cite Islamic law as pre-eminent and attack (via more terrorists / Islamists) anyway.
Let there be no doubt. We cannot live with radical Islam. Secular Muslims are one thing, but what's being preached (via support from our Saudi "allies") is violent and contrary to the principles upon which western democracies are based. This intolerance from the Islamic side dates all the way back prior to the crusades, to the very founding of Islam where Mohammed slaughtered whole villages of the opposition.
Do not forget history
John, denver, co,
I'm not surprised they beheaded the Afghan driver and let the Italian go. The Taliban may have seen the Italian as an enemy, but the Afghan was a traitor - and the punishment for treason is generally death....

just another day in the religion of extreme violence!
why didn't bush and blair finish the job before iraq? maybe because of the continued threats of weapons of mass destruction from saddam, whether real or imagined. saddam liked to bluff, his bluff was called. and there are still some of us that believe the raw materials were sent out of the country before the invasion.

This article clearly demonstrates the absolute brutality and savagery of these savage people. The Taliban should have been fought until not a single one of these people was alive. These, and their ilk, should be wiped off the Earth.

Clearly whether 5 people got released or not a ransom was paid, so they'll be back for more.

I feel terribly sorry for the driver. He was probably just an innocent guy trying to earn some money for his family. The Taliban who killed him have been doing the same thing to others among their own people, especially women. It's hard to understand how they think this kind of action is their ticket to heaven. What kind of God do they think they are worshipping, who would approve and reward such brutality?

This story shows me what I have always believed: it was wrong to invade Iraq. All available resources should have been sent to Afghanistan to annihilate this evil called Taleban, along with its cousin called Al Qaeda. It was a grievous mistake to go into Iraq without completing the job in Afghanistan. The head of the snake should have been crushed right there in Afghanistan. I believed and still believe as many as half a million allied soldiers should have gone into Afghanistan that November of 2001. If I could see it then, how come our leaders Bush and Blair didn't?

Can you say this in England today, or is it too politically incorrect ?? Hitler went after the wrong religion .

whoever said war was a nice thing? while I'm sorry for the driver how many tens of thousands of other Afghans have died for nothing?
The Taliban will rule Afghanistan again, regardless of what the US wants. We will have to learn to accept them and make them uphold the principles of international law.
When we learn to respect them, they will learn to respect us.
Akram, London,

How can anyone think that fighting people like that is wrong?
Randy, Ventura, CA
Would some one please tell me why we can drop a nuclear bomb in this remote area and poison the whole place for a generation. Europe/America you need to be aware.
Evil is breeding. Why are we waiting for the next horrific attack that will make 911 or Madrid or London look amaturish in nature ?
WW-II taught us the use of overwhelming force is the only way to defeat a determined enemy. We will end up using it, it will just be a matter of how many more must be sacraficed to this radical muslim menace before we act.
Lary Canary, Bohunk,GA, USA
Common people rejoice when a human being is saved.
But how many persons have died to secure the five talibans freed in exchange of Daniele life? And what about the driver and the interpreter? Are all of them less valued human beings?
What is right, what is wrong.. difficult to say.
Whatever one thinks about the mission in Afganistan, I would suggest that people deciding to get into the territories controlled by talibans, should refrain to do it, or keep his own adventure as a personal risk.
Often nowadays happiness is linked to sadness.
