Richard Lloyd Parry in Ichikawa
The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday
The man suspected of killing Lindsay Hawker, the English teacher found strangled in a Tokyo suburb on Monday, drew a portrait of her just days before she was murdered.
Tatsuya Ichihashi, the subject of a national manhunt who was stalking Ms Hawker, handed her the sketch with his address and phone number on it when he followed her home.
Detective Akira Ebihara yesterday said that the teacher then agreed to give Ichihashi, 28, a private English lesson.
Ichihashi fled from police on Monday when they arrived at his apartment to question him over Ms Hawker’s disappearance. The horticultural student ran barefoot from nine police officers and has been missing ever since. Moments later, police found the body of the woman, from Brandon, near Coventry, in an earth filled bath in the apartment, located in Ichikawa, east Tokyo.
Ms Hawker, 22, and her expatriate colleagues at the language school in Tokyo where she worked had grown concerned at Ichihashi’s attentions.
Fellow teacher Toby Wheeler, 30, said: “We all told Lindsay not to be so trusting but she thought the best of everyone.”
Bill Hawker, the victim’s father, took formal possession of her body yesterday after the conclusion of a post-mortem examination. It showed that her hands and ankles had been tied with plastic cord, and she was buried in horticultural soil.
There was speculation the murder, echoing violent Manga comics which are extremely popular in Japan, may have been copied from the cartoons.
Piles of the comics, which feature stories of rape and torture, were found at Ichihachi’s flat. The search for the suspected killer continued in vain yesterday as Japanese police raided a suburban sex motel following a reported sighting. Twenty officers went to the Hotel Chateau, a “love hotel” in NishiFunabashi, east of Tokyo, where rooms are rented to couples by the hour. After a search of the premises, broadcast on Japanese TV, police emerged without their target.

Not that an isolated event such as this one details the new age of an entire nation, but it does seem that the golden days of ESL teaching in Japan are long gone. Japan, once touted as one of the safest countries in the world, definitely is plagued with its own issues. To make matters worse, there is little care or protection given to "gaijin" from local police authorities. The yakuza are still in heavy control of much of the urban areas. I spent the year 2002 teaching in Tochigi-ken. I was randomly attacked by local gangsters and left for dead on the street. I was severely burned and bludgeoned. I spent a week in the ICU and a further month in the hospital. I lost everything and had to return to the U.S. The police called me a liar and I was unable to reclaim any expenses.
Japan is a great nation with wonderful opportunities for foreigners. However, like any other nation, one must educate himself before and during the visit. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Hawker's family.

I can not forgive this perverted man who distroyed this women's chance to have an amazing experience in Japan. I feel close to her because she used to teach English for kids and adults in my home town in Tokyo. I am very proud that she chose to visit Japan, learn about my country and my culture . I really hope the man that did this will be arrested and will be severely punished for killing her. I feel complicated and very sad as a japanese person that something so terrible can have happened to somebody visiting my country.

On the other hand, quite a few of Manga comics Otaku and Japanophiles head for Japan. It is strange that they invariably find a job at a language school, such as NOVA, AEON, etc. as only Mother tongue English teachers. They fancy that Japan is a safer country than other foreign countries.
Anyway, in order to avoid repeating a tragedy like this again, you should learn a sense of approaching danger and have a bilingual friend who you can ask for help.

On earth what are the manners that seem to criticize the whole British Japan though there is not it by a national crime such as the war crimes that Japan violated?
Are you stupid?

I want to share an e-mail from a friend in Japan: She writes:
We hereby deeply applogize to all the British people for the lady killed by
a Japanese youth. Hateful news. Ken also pushes me to appologize to you,
so.....We see her father and sisters with tears facing media people in TV, which squeeze us Japanese. She must have loved Japan and believed that Japan was a safe country. What a pity. In this case, we see no excuse with the murderer.Wait, we will soon find him out and bring him to court.

I can completely understand how a young girl could find herself in a situtation that in any other country she would not willing have placed herself. Japan is a place where general reality seems to be suspended. I lived in Osaka and taught at Nova for 2 years, and although I never taught any private lessons, many of my friends did. You rarely feel scared in Japan so you lower your defenses.
Despite what anyone may say it is not this girls fault, she was doing what hundreds of young foreigners do everyday. I think the only thing that needs to be brought into question is possibly the Japanese veiw of women. This is a country that has exfetively porn placed through its letter boxes everyday (adds for call girls that Playboy a run for their money), and where being felt up on the train is so common they now have seperate womens carriages. Its the problem that needs to be addressed here.
From the Past teacher at the Nova Multi Media centre, our thoughts are with her family.
