China’s Loch Ness monster has been sighted. Or so Chinese state-run television says. Not just one, but more than a dozen huge creatures can be seen churning across Lake Kanasi in remote western China, leaving a foamy wake more like an enormous motorboat than a big fish.
A rare video filmed by a tourist at the lake in the Heavenly Mountains of the wild Xinjiang region, has reignited debate over the existence of an underwater creature that can compete with the Loch Ness monster in both mass and mystery.
The grainy film shows about 15 objects moving at high speed just beneath the surface of the lake and whipping the smooth blue water into a bubbling white frenzy. Chinese Central Television broadcast the video on its news channel, describing the footage shot by a passing tourist on July 5 as the clearest ever seen of a legendary beast that has been rumoured for centuries to live in the depths of Lake Kanasi.
Local myth among the Chinese Mongolians living in the scenic mountains near the Russian and Mongolian borders has it that the animals have been known to drag sheep, cows and even horses from the shore and into the deep to devour them.
Yuan Guoying, of the Xinjiang Institute of Environmental Protection, told The Times that the video provided important proof in his more than two decades of research at the lake. “Only fish could make waves in this formation. I think the video is real.”
The television commentator described the sighting as the first since June 7, 2005 when two black creatures measuring more than 10 metres in length appeared on the surface swimming at speed from the shore to the centre of the lake. The newsreader described the latest appearance: “They sometimes gathered in a flock, sometimes spread about or moved shoulder to shoulder. The scene is grand and they looked like a fleet.”
State television made no attempt to identify the animals, saying only: ‘This time a large number of unidentified creatures emerged, bringing more mystery to Lake Kanasi.”
Professor Yuan has been on their trail since 1980 and has been gripped by the mystery since his first sighting in 1985 when he says he saw as many as 50 of what he called fish. “They looked like reddish-brown tadpoles because I could only see their heads on the surface. They opened their mouths to breathe and their length was about 10 to 15 metres.”
He spotted the animals again on May 28, 2004 when he was standing looking down at the lake from a nearby hill. “I thought there was a huge piece of black plastic in the lake and that someone had been polluting it. But then I released that it must be the back of a giant fish. I was shocked because they were just too big. Looking at them was like looking at submarines.”
When Mr Yuan got back to his office he tried to calculate the size of the animals by setting their proportions against those of the surrounding landmarks such as trees or the shape of the shoreline. “I didn’t dare say they were bigger than 20 metres because no one would believe me.”
Chinese researchers in the 1980s said the ‘monster’ was likely to be a huge member of the salmon family – one of eight species of fish living in the lake. Mr Yuan gave their name as Hucho Taimen, a freshwater salmon tht thrives in deep frigid waters. He says the biggest Hucho Taimen salmon ever captured was 2.1 metres long and was found in Russia.
The animals that roam Lake Kanasi live in an area about 24 kilometres by two kilometers and with an average depth of 122 metres and as deep as 188 metres at one point.
Mr Yuan believes that a lot more research is needed although China lacks the scientific equipment to make further studies. And it would be impossible to catch a fish of this size. “This fish will have tremendous strength.”
Other Chinese scientists have cast doubt on his findings, but Mr Yuan is adamant. “People will just say ‘You’ve got to be kidding’. But I saw them with my own eyes. I am a scientist. I have no choice but to believe what I saw.”

I believe the giant sturgeon theory. Plenty of documentation that they can get up to 12 feet long. They can live to be over 100 years old. So what would it mean if a sturgeon was well over 100 years old?? In Lake Tahoe or Flathead Lake, how big could one of these things really get? I saw one once that was just three feet long, and I didn't want to get any closer. Creepy looking thing. If I came across one that was 20 feet long in one of these famous lakes, you can bet I'd be very motivated to be heading the other way in a big hurry. Supposedly sturgeon are not aggressive toward people, but I wouldn't want to find out by personal experience.

Well, there is nothing impossible on this earth. Human's imagination is supreme. Some times this imagination is infact Real and somtimes it is Virtual. The Mother Nature has many more surprises in her secret basket. Not matter we can use satellite to get at the bottom of the truth. In India, we believe but dont imagine all such things as other people in the world think about such surprise sightings.
I know and do believe this is possible. It is true that no-a-days sensational stories are at the top of every thing. And such sensational stories are only product of weak mind. We in India are more inclined towards the LORD supreme who has crated every living and non-living beaing. It is better to leave such creatures to have their own life, we should not disturb them. Man has done lots and lots of harm to nature by being progressive and industrialized. But may I ask every civilized citizen of the world" where are we today after all these facalities. In fact NOWHERE. We are afraid of no.

While on vacation to Montana's Glacier National Park a few years back I saw what appeared to be the same type of creature swimmingf across a finger lake. Actually it appeared to be several of them, leaving white foamy wakes behind.. Always a doubting Thomas I kayaked out to them and found that both of them were simply logs being propelled by the wind. This is a phenomena that is especially found in long narrow finger lakes where strong breezes can exist in the middle of lakes while there is none at the shoreline.

Sounds like the Lam-tun worm, to me
geordie, newcastle,
Given that we now have satellite imagery which can supposedly allow us to read newspaper headlines from space how can it be that unknown objects of these dimensions can be a mystery? Is nobody taking a closer look or would that spoil a damn fine mystery?
Paul Hogan, Malaga,
I lived in Urumqi for a whole year, last year and never heard anyone mention any monster in a lake.

I thought Atlantis was located inland and was buried by landslides before being tipped into a lake?
Perhaps they had taimen to eat there too!
David de Havelland, Maclean, NSW Australia
They look like jetskis. And that video has been on youtube for months!
starling, Lancaster,
Why not? They seem innoffensive enough.
Now, on the other hand, I've seen unidentifiable creatures roaming the halls of the U.S. Capitol building. They look like senators and representatives, but by the evidence of what they're doing... obviously they're not human. Their behavior concerns me a lot more than some overlooked pleiseosaur in a Chinese lake.
James P, Sacramento, California
Yeah - but they taste like chicken.
Deepak, Wayland, USA
Next they'll discover Atlantis at the bottom of this lake.
Chris Wiseley, Nottingham , UK
That's not what they said?!? They said they may have discovered a creature in a lake. Do you think that we'll discover Atlantis at the bottom of the Loch Ness?
Alex, London,
It's all the industrial waste they're dumping everywhere, the product of man's inhumanity to the planet, like the Simpson's tri-ocular fish. Keep at it and you'll have penta-breasted mermaids coming out of there singing "OOOps I've Done it Again" and losing custody of their spawn due to pollution-induced amnesia.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany
Better not mention the existence of curious fish species too much, or we will have another Rick Stein outlet in China.

Several years ago I visited a respected scientific institute in China and was surprised at how many scientists were fascinated by B-Movie staples such as yetis, aliens, Loch Ness Monster etc. They were deeply disappointed when I explained to them the impossibility of the existence of Nessie due to Oligotrophic lakes not being able to feed such large animals.
I wonder if these mythical beliefs are related to the transistion from a superstitious to rational society? The UK and US went through this in the 50s.
Dave, Leeds, UK
It's Bigfoot, I tells ya!
Lee, manchester,
I think it might be like a play toy that is used underwater for boys or maybe its real. When I see the picture on the screen it doesn't look like Nessie or a Loch Ness monster. Nessie is a Diplodocus and that monster looks like a giant serpent. Don't you think it looks like a serpent don't you? it looks like a serpent to me. i like the investagion you guys put on yahoo. It is so interesting to me. Thankyou!

I read that in the Yakutia Sakha hunter were killing 2.75-3.0 m long taimen. May it is true. If there in Kanasi lake big taimen no more than 2.5 m. May be they seen 3-4 fish were swiming close and look lik one big bish. that pack of taimen was divided seperatly spots and persons who said saw them tahat bee 10-12 fish(dozen). If it true I think such.
But I don't believe Loh Ness monster. Why such mysteries left outsied of sea reseracher observations????

Don't be silly, not snakeheads at least none that are known to science, these would have to be gargantuan snakeheads. snakeheads are warm water loving fish, not temperate.
We're talkin "bigger than 20 meters" here, 1 meter = aprox. 3 feet. (39 inch.) 20 x 3 = well over 60 feet. This is either an unknown cryptid the likes of which are akin to other lake monsters (large dragon worms? maybe or the horse headed creatures such as seen in a turkish lake). The surrounding legends that exists for these animals, supporting their existence, seem to bely the idea that they are mere submarines, although that crossed my mind as well by the footage - as is often the case, there's probably footage not being shown that could help.

Must be snakeheads (fish species). Perhaps the "giant snakehead" at a length of six feet (1.8 meters) is not the biggest of the species. I believe snakeheads are native to China. SInce snakeheads can "walk" to a certain extent, maybe pulling barnyard animals into the water is that far of a stretch.

I once saw a half-turtle-half-baby leap out of the Yarra River in Melbourne. I'm not a scientist but I know I definitely saw something unidentified.
Angela, London,
The video looks credible
Joe, Pohnpei, Micronesia,
Gurgle, burrrrrppppp. Perhaps they are thinly disguised nuclear submarines. One hears that carp grow to enormous sizes.

The video is fairly impressive. It has an authentic feel to it. Check it out and see what I mean.
