A suicide bomber killed up to 13 Pakistani police officers close to Islamabad's Red Mosque today, hours after pro-Taleban extremists calling President Pervez Musharraf a "killer" reoccupied the compound.
The attack took place on the day the mosque was reopened, just two weeks after a major Army operation - authorised by the President - killed 102 militants and forced radicals from the mosque and neighbouring madrassa.
Witnesses said that the bomber was targeting officers from the Punjab constabulary, who had been ordered to the scene in order to disperse the militants inside the mosque.
The explosion, which took place half a mile from the Red Mosque site and close to the entrance of a hotel and market, also took civilian casualties, although the vast majority of the 13 dead and 50 injured are believed to be police officers.
As the blast went off, police surrounding the mosque were firing tear-gas in an attempt to disperse several hundred extremists who had raised the black flag of jihad over the compound after chasing a government-appointed cleric from the premises.
A Pakistani security official said the suicide bomber had particularly targeted police officers trying to stop the latest Red Mosque occupation.
"A man detonated explosives strapped to his body among two rows of Punjab police constabulary members who were there on duty because of the unrest at the Red Mosque," he told the AFP news agency. "Most of the dead were policemen."
Blood and pieces of flesh were seen strewn around the site of the blast near one of the main markets of the city.
"There was a huge blast. I have put the bodies of three civilians and three policemen in ambulances myself," an eyewitness called Saifullah, whose hands and clothes were stained with blood, said.
Meanwhile, inside the mosque, extremists demanded the return of their former cleric, Maulana Abdul Aziz, who was arrested by the Army after he was caught sneaking out of the mosque wearing a burka during the recent bloody siege.
The military operation two weeks ago killed the senior cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi, and led to the arrest of Maulana Abdul Aziz, who was his brother.
"If jihad is terrorism then this terrorism will stay forever," said one protester, Ghulam Mustafa, while others chanted "Musharraf is a dog," and "Musharraf is a killer."
The Times saw Pakistani police in riot gear firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse the students. In return, protesters threw stones at an armoured personnel carrier and dozens of police officers stationed on a road outside the mosque.
General Musharraf is desperate to ensure the current stand-off is solved without violence, however, and is believed to be reluctant to call in the Army at this stage.
After the military's huge weapons seizure in its recent operation, it is regarded as unlikely that the mob has arms at its disposal, although there are fears that weapons could be smuggled in.
Those fears have been fuelled by indications that sections of the Islamist community in Pakistan feel anger over what they perceive as a heavy-handed military operation by the Army to rid the Red Mosque of its extremists, and have growing sympathy for their cause.
The Red Mosque militants had been demanding the overthrow of General Musharraf's Government and the establishment of an Islamic state, and the Army's operation had discovered a massive cache of weapons, ammunition, grenades and suicide belts in the mosque compound.
Attacks against the Pakistani Army, particularly the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, have soared by pro-Taleban extremists seeking revenge for losses incurred at the mosque. Earlier this month, 16 Pakistani soldiers were killed in an ambush in North Waziristan.

The ruling establishment, all political parties, the judiciary and the civil society have to decide, once and for all, whether Pakistan will be a theocratic state like Saudi Arabia or Iran, or become a democratic , social welfare state in which all men and women are equal before the law, religion is an entirely personal matter, meeting basic needs like sanitation, clean water, housing, health, education, employment, eradication of poverty etc. take precedence over building up a miltary machine which has given to the people nothing but suffering and deprivation. Unless a declaration of the nature and the objectives of the state is made in clear and unambiguous language, the cliche, platitudes and double speak will continue to provide cover to vested interests to persist with actions which bring only grief and misery to the people.

Mr. Sharif, he's not blaming Islam. He's blaming ignorance, a void which religious leaders can and will exploit for their own personal reasons. The same can be said for Christianity. Without a strong control over these leaders, they can exploit the vagueness of their sacred texts to justify anything to an uneducated constituency. Christianity, at least the major interpretations, has some strong and international controls. Islam's controls end at the border, and even within those there are turf wars between leaders.
Providing "the masses" with a broad non-religious education is the best way to defuse the control that flakey religious leaders may try to gain through distortions and lies. Either that, or gather all the flakes in a room and blow them to the "kingdom come" they want to send us to.
Rufus, Spuzzum,
Only a religion called Islam can instigate love towards death for self and others as a means to please God. See the illogicity. The same God has given our lives to complete our life cycle I mean from Birth to Natural Death. Who are we to take away the lives of Ours and Others. Our motive in life should be to realise the Ultimate truth, not taking away our life and thus objecting to this objective of Self realisation.

Blame a few, give me a break... Until the leaders of the tainted religion stands up to the many that are doing the kiliing, this World War will go on. To say this is a few, is to deny the reality of the killings around the world. Just one person dying because they do not accept anothers religion shows a lost sense of the value the writer places on human life.
It's a Stage 4 Cancer that is spreading, not a pimple that needs a bandaid. It's about using religion for power, control & money & it has nothing to do with real faith, or caring about people, their after life, or a better world. There is a problem when religions take a position, of live the way I tell you to live or die. The lack of real leadership in the tainted religion is a problem. The leadership doing nothing shows they also place little value on human life or perhaps they secretly support the extremists goals. The leaderships lack of action, even if it's just words does suggest the real goals of the tainted religion.

The problem is that there is no credible opposition to Musharraf. At this stage, the choices besides him are a civilian elitist group, turned out of office in the middle of blatant corruption, or a the extremists.

Humans are blessed with the ability to think and reason. Religion takes advantage of this by creating an alternative path away from reason through the idea of some higher power and the bs rules handed down. This structure and order was needed for the foundation for culture and law as one of the only ways to instruct the common man/woman civilized means of which to live. The only way to correct this malfunction is through education. This of course will take centuries and being that their are millions of people and not enough resources to go around I don't see that ever happening. Religion will be the ultimate downfall of the human society as we know it and there is really no way around it. The world is too populated and we can all kill each other very easily through nukes. We can either be pro-active and eliminate these defected humans which will cause massive backlashes or wait until they get a hold of nukes and kill us all. I give society about 200 more years until we're gone

Don't blame the religion. The religion absolutely forbids killing innocent people. Suicide is also considered a sin in Islam.
It is because of a few individuals who just happen to belong to the faith that the whole religion is tainted. Blame the individual, not the religion.
Ahmad Sharif, Lahore, Pakistan
These people who kill innocent citizens of their own country and all their supporters must be absolutely heartless and perverse. I thought the people of Pakistan hated the Americans more than their own people. I was obviously wrong! If I were a Pakistani i would be very fearful for the future whilst these treacherous people now turn their murderous intents on their innocent women and children. What utter madness. Still the only benefit will be to non Islamic religions - after all who in their right mind would want to become part of a religion which will sanction the killing of its own nationals and fellow Muslim?
Its just utter madness. I really feel so sorry for the Muslims in the West who are seen as terrorists because of such vile acts. Nothing that anybody has done deserve such carnage nothing. George W Bush is a saint compared to these lustful heartless killers.
They are just lions dressed up as lambs. They should help to create jobs for their nations like India and China.
R Singh, London , UK
I think true democracy & political tolerence is the key factor to address such issues in any civil society.
Shahid, London UK,
Heavy handed or not - you simply cannot let people get away with threatening the population with their " or else " tactics.
A heavily armed threat - massing such weapons as suicide belts surely needed to be dealt with in this way.
What other realistic option did president Musharaf have?

Chantz,
Taleban is in power in pakistan... Im sure next move from the americans would be to cross into pakistani territory, this will further fuel the hatred towards US...
Where have all the leaders gone... Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mandela... Lord help us!

Considering the fact that Pakistan has nuclear weapons (don't know who helped them to acquire it) these are very worrying events.
Nick, Montreal,
People are being killed here in Pakistan due to the wrong policies of GENERAL Musharraf, and he is busy in Duabi to save his Presidency and Dictatorship by meeting the "Daughter of the Nation" Bay-Nazeer Bhutto. The wrong Policies by the GENERAL and his ARMY are now paying the result, and not only the ARMY itself, but the innocent public are facing the heat.
On the other hand, I am wondering that what sort of Democracy America want to promote by suporting and protecting a Military GENERAL in Pakistan????
I am now waiting for a news, that may be some day when I wake up this news is running on the TV Channels..that...The President of Pakistan GENERAL PERVAIZ MUSHARAF is missing from the President house, but i am wondering which country in the world can offer him a asylum??? any idea..??
Khan, Duesseldorf, Germany
The problem. in my view, comes from the factthat Pakistan president has the approval of US president but has not the approval of Pakistani people. Pakistan's survival depends on getting an elected goverment with or withour US approval.
Suresh Kumar, london SE108Jt, UK
Well! Militant Muslims do not talk about their problems. All they want to do is kill innocent people who cannot alter nor effect their own set of problems.
I hope Musharaf deals with these Militant Muslims quickly and effectively.
Marserobert, Nottingham, England
This is a very worrying development.
Musharaf is an evil necessity to retain secuirty over the nuclear weapons.
However, his misjudgment in recent weeks has now given him no more room to maneuver.
I am surprised that he has lasted as long as he has, however, now, it is the end game for him, as he has unleashed the wrath of a sector of his society that is only the extension of the resentment felt by the more moderate.
Kambiz Shahri, Pretoria, South Africa, Gauteng
Now is the time for Musharraf to stand firm, call the army in, and take care of this mess before the Taliban gains any more strength. It is critical for the future of Pakistan that Musharraf makes a showing of strong leadership.
