One of Bollywood's biggest film stars wept in court today after being sentenced to six years in prison for possessing weapons linked to a terror attack which killed 257 people in Bombay in 1993.
In a case which has gripped the Indian media, Judge Pramod Kode said Sanjay Dutt, one of the Indian film industry's most recognisable faces, had shown "scant respect for the law" by being found with the guns at his home, given to him by some of the plotters.
As the Judge handed down his testimony, Dutt stood weeping before him. "In no sense can this be said to be a minor offence," Mr Kode said, adding as he looked directly at the film star: "Don’t be sentimental - be calm and quiet."
The star's sentencing marks the end of an extraordinary Bombay-based trial over the March 12, 1993, bombings, which has lasted 12 years.
During the course of the proceedings more than 100 people were convicted over the attacks, a dozen of which were sentenced to death, while 686 witnesses were questioned and thousands of pages of testimony examined.
Dutt was found guilty last November of illegally possessing three automatic rifles and a pistol, but was acquitted of being directly behind - or involved in - the terrorist bombings.
After serving an initial 18 months after his initial arrest before being released on bail, today's sentence means Dutt will spend four and a half years behind bars.
In particular, his sentence is regarded as bad news for Bollywood - the Indian answer to Hollywood - as Dutt was regarded as one of the industry's best-known and most marketable figures.
Bollywood could lose about 500 million rupees (£6m) for two unfinished Dutt films, Alibag and Fraud, Komal Nata, who runs the Film Information magazine, told the AP news agency.
"It is a body blow to the film industry," Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt, who directed Dutt in the 1986 hit movie Namm, or Name, added.
A well-known action hero who found a niche in comedy over the past five years, Dutt’s case was closely tracked in a nation whose industry has boomed significantly over the last decade.
Despite being out on bail for over a decade, Dutt was able to complete a number of major film projects and only recently finished filming comedies like Dhamaal, or Loud Noise, and Phatafat, or Pronto.

as u sow shall u reap, its the imperishable law of the universe..and today Mr Dutt is paying that price..its shameful to see a man like him who projects the good on screen ,being involved in such attacks in reality..justice has prevailed and now the supreme court should retain the same verdict.
Mrs Raj, TURKS, CARIBBEAN ISLANDS
IF ANY of you INDIANS are here showing disrespect for the verdict of the court, remember, you are showing contempt of court - and that is a punishable offence in itself. It is not the duty of the court to let somebody go, because there are others who may have committed a similar crime, like some of you lame arguers claim. It is the court's duty to consider all that is placed before it, and apply the law as laid down by India's own judicial system. The court has done its job by the book and that is perfectly the way it should be. Sanjay Dutt may be a good guy and all that, but for his irresponsible behaviour, he must face the music. The verdict is not one that is swayed by emotion or sympathy for anybody. It is a clear interpretation of the law that India subscribed to a long time ago.
Senthil Kumar, Venice, CA, USA
6 years was is too much for this non violent crime. He could have been put on probation.
Abhay Dang, Delhi, India,
Kudos to Indian judiciary for showing the stregnth in handing out this truly deserved sentence under pressures beyond anyone's imagination.
Keep up the good work....
Ashish, Milton Keynes, U.K.
Sanjay you r a brave and strong person. You have seen many up and downs, and this is merely a week breaker in your life. You will overcome it. I am sure u will get relief from supreme court. U r a superstar and as all of knows star is always star.
We will wait for u and we all want to see munna bhai-25.
Alok Kumar Thakur, Ahmedabad, India
I have been a great fan of Sanjay Dutt too. But having said that, justice is to be adminisitered in a fair and equal manner, without any consideration of the status of the person. It's hard sometimes, but with evidences and guilt found, the sentencing is justified. How else do you account for having the justice system in place. People who think this is injustice need to open their eyes up. Before the act, the crime takes shape in the mind and if you went on with your intent to procure illegal weapons, it knows no bounds, what else you could have done, if not caught.
Munish, Dallas, USA/TX
sanjay dutt was punished but rusi mulla was acquitted for the same offence. if anyone desrved leniency, sanjay was one. he admitted his fault in the court. only one to do so.
the reasons for his sentence are not far to seek though....
ashok gangwar, allahabad,
I am just shocked, looks like he was given harsh sentence. There are so many criminals who openly flaunt their ill gotten weapon, but Poor Sanjay had to be made the sacrificial goat.
He will come out of this just fine, hope supreme court has some sense, to do the right thing.
Sanjay -be strong, This phase will pass as well, have faith in Supreme Court.
Lalit S. Chaube, PSL, FLORIDA/USA
I still believe he got caught up in the midst of some conspiracy, its hard to believe 'apna munna bhai' could have done anything to harm the ppl of mumbai. Alas!!
Raghu, Mumbai, MH, India
Good people have good company and not the company of gangsters-keeping AK 47 at home.He deserved this sentence - how can one tolerate anti -national people involved in terrorist activities .
Sanjaya, London, UK
Shows that our courts and processes are better than those in the US. IN Hollywood there are different rules for celebritie and different rules for the ordinary man on the street.
noel almeida, goa, india
What you do comes back to you?? Nice to know that India treats everyone the same when you are a criminal.
James, Orlando, US
I'm a big fan of Sunju baba too.
But if he was truly involved with the plotters which after 12 years is finally proved, he deserves his punishment.
Natural, Framingham, USA
Question here is ? why? and is it true?
Is it true these guns belonged to terrorist's?
and Why would he do that ?
zerokewl, madras,tamil,
In India there is no such thing as Justice. When you ask any Indian immigrant living abroad or Indian wanting to go abroad, there first reason is "there is no law and order or justice in India". I am no fan of Bollywood film industry. I personally think that Sanjay has been used as an excuse to publicise the so called justice in India. What of those who are being murdered for dowry, for being a female in a male dominated environment and for not having enough money to bribe people in authority? Why are people keen on leaving their homeland to live abroad.? Sanjay has been an excuse and would remain an excuse for those who are themselves guilty of many things which fail to hit the public domain.
TARLO, Moseley,
Yes, he was a legend, a real legend and a hero.
SL, United kingdom,
Any body with high profile remains unpunished. This is first time I remember that somebody got prison. Every rich and famous in India thinks he can just walk freely after comitting crime. Indian justice system can change things. Some of the corrupt politicians and people should also be punished.
Indian, USA,
There were several people involved in the 1993 bombay blasts. Most of them got lifetime sentences and some of them were hung. So why does Mr. Dutt get special treatment? Just because he is a bollywood star? He was involved just like everyone else. They didn't get a 10 year bail like Mr. Dutt. Only actors can get this special treatment from the government because money talks!!!! I can bet you that Mr. Dutt will be out in one year because its very easy to buy the Indian Government with bribes. And we all know that Mr. Dutt is part of an elite upper class industry so money is no issue. Look forward to seeing him out in about a year if that long. I have nothing against Mr. Dutt but I hate when stars get special treatment...they are humans just like everyone else. Others didn't have that much money to buy the Indian Government like the stars do.
Abhishek, Mumbai, India
He is lucky to get away with a lighter sentence, because the POTA law became non existant. The fact that he did accomodate weapons given by the plotters is in itself complicity in crime, and he deserves just as much as any other accomplice in crime should. Infact, his incarceration so far has been no real deal afterall, since he has been on bail for an extraordinarily long time, influenced either by his stardom, or by the expertise of his lawyers. Its time he hauls the coal.
Karthik, C'ville, US
KK, Try letting your heart go for him when he decided to have arms in his possession. Wasnt he aware that he was abetting crime then.....wake up KK.
Vee, Troy,
The entire world has watched for the last 12 years, machinery of India, which was in full mode to arrest thousands of known or unknown culprits of Bombay Bomb Blasts for reason or no reason and finally convicted more than 100, 12 for deaths. however, it is sad and shocking that not a single one has been convicted for killings more than 2000 innocent Muslims, who were killed during the Bari MASJID RIOTS, TWO YEARS BEFORE THE BOMBAT BOMB BLASTS in their own homes, watched their wives and daughters raped in broad day light. Krishna Commission has recommended prosecution, arrest and conviction of hundreds of culprits including Police Officers and Shiv Sainiks but the Maharastra Government has no money and no time to take any action against them.
THE JUSTICE IS BLIND IN INDIA. IT IS FOR HINDUS AND MAJORITY ALONE, NOT FOR MUSLIMS AND MINORITY.
GOD BLESS OUR COMMUNAL SYSTEM
ZEN DAHODI, Ontario, CALIFORNIA-USA
The punishment is out of proportion to the offence Sanjay has committed. I am sure Sanjay will file an appeal.
In that part of the world particularly in the neighbouring country, Pakistan, brazen defiance of law in Karachi on 12th May was witnessed in which activists of a linguist party were clearly seen on TV footage pumping bullets from AK-47.I
f these thugs were here in the UK they would have easily been hunted down but nothing happened to them in Pakistan simply because these thugs belonged to a party which is an ally of President Musharraf. Isn't it disgusting.
At least in India no one is above the law. The judiciary is quite indepedent in India.
And only very recently the judiciary in Pakistan has come out of the shackles of the dictator after successful movement by the lawyers in support of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry who has now been reinstated in his rightful position.
B.A. Solangi, Ilford, UK
this is a welcome decision in the sense that it is one of the VERY few examples to show that law treats every criminal/suspect the same regardless of class, stature. what makes it more interesting is the fact that it happened in india where law can be easily bought...one of the other things i noticed is that indian law played fair game to hand down charges against a very popular public figure irrespective of his stature and standing where as if its in britain if a colored man has committed a crime as a white man, the punishment differs with the chances of white man absconding or subject to punishment of lesser terms
raj, london,
Let us be honest, indian judicial system works only in such high profile cases. Misguided acts of otherwise sane people like Dutt become an oppurtunity for the system to prove that it works. Thousands of ordinary people will tell you about corrupt judges and the justice that can be bught and sold like anything else in India. Murderes and rapists go free and some of them are sitting in the Indian parliament and the state legislatures. Let us not get ahead of ourselves here. Impriosing Sanjay Dutt for 4 more years serves no purpose. He already paid for his crimes unlike the millions of currupt Indians in all sorts of places.
sam singh, Chicago, USA
Its a lesson for everyone. You reap what you sow. I am proud of Indian judiciary who have shown that star power does not allow crime go unpunished.
Ranjan, Mississauga, Canada
I agree with Neha. Just because this guy is a popular actor and has acted in some silly movies, cracking up people does not mean we should cover up his misdeeds. I think the court has delivered a right decision, and he is just paying the price. Serves him right.
Arun, Cupertino, USA
No one is great beyond the law. You have done things which you are not supposed to do, so you got the punishment. Let this be a learning lesson for lot of Youngsters who usually follow their heroes.
Four and Half years is not a big deal when compared to life long miseries people faced during the Mumbai blasts, get your self more transformed and i guess this time will allow you to have a paradymn shift. No more weepings, face the truth and just obide and please do not get escaped from the law.
---A die hard fan of Sanjay Dutt,
VenkatP, Atlanta, USA
It' nice to know that Bollywood stars are not bigger then the law, and that India's new image of law and order cannot be bought with fame. I certainly think it's a big move in the right direction- all you other starts who think they are above the law think again!
Gurwinder S Kamboz, W. London, London, UK
well law does not distinguish poor and rich. All are same in the eyes of law. Yes it is a sad news for all wo love Dutt and the loss to film industry is huge.
But then a matured man that sanjay is , he should have thought of all consequences of his actions and should not
have acted in a manner which goes against law.
Time will run fast and in these 4 years plus in prison Dutt will profoundly change his perceptions of life and then on will have a new life --a new beginning worth adoration.
srinivasan, chennai, india /tamil nadu

Vee, Troy,
Finally a prominent star in india is put to jail. Let this be a lesson to all those promient people in India who think they can easily escape from the LAW using their STAR status.
suren, Orlando, US
Hope he learns his lesson ! Riches cannot always get you out of breaking the law. Justice has prevailed although many have suffered thru his actions.
jl, india,
Sanjay got what he deserves. Thank the judge who did not get swayed by the star power.
Ranjan, Mississauga, Mississauga
I think people should wake up and remember that has had a great life as a star and he abused this by associating with the underworld and buying weapons from bombers. I pity all those who died and are suffering from injuries ever since, although Dutt is a good actor on screen, who knows what he's really like in person.
Rick, London, UK
sanju baba is the finest actors our industry has got today and to add to dat a good human being but that certainly cant hide his bad deeds. he got what he deserved and people might think thats harsh. but just a give a thought to the scale of the crime and the victims of this tragedy. if everybody starts keeping an AK-56 rifle for "self defence" allegedly than what would be the need for the system??
maverick, delhi, india

It is the testimony for the Indian judicial system and proved that all are equal before the law.
Arul, Chennai, India/ Tamilnadu
Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal.Yes, he had been careless but he is a reformed and much more matured person now.His family's service to the nation as well as to the society should be taken into account. He surely deserves relief under Offendors Probabtion Act.We must have some empathy for our Stars.
May god give him strengh to bear all this.
sunil sethi, delhi,
KK, your heart goes out to sanjay?? My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives during the bomb blasts. Shame on you for pittying someone like SANJAY DUTT !!
Neha, Punjab, India
Sanjay Dutt got what he deserved.
Versamedi, Sacramento, USA
Don't pass go, don't collect 200, thanks
Adam Webb, Mk, UK
I used to like Sanjay Dutt. But now he disgusts me. How can Sanjay weep like a baby. He is supposed to be a hero. It seems I was wrong. Wheter he did those bombings or not, only God knows, but he should never have started crying. This is so embarassing. How will I now defend him in front of my friends. I am so ashamed of even talking about Sanjay. I am so shocked at his behaviour.
Vejay Patel, Manchester,UK, UK
I am die hard fan of Sanjay Dutt. I an extremely dissppointed over the decision. May God bless Sanjay. I will always pray for him.
Farrukh, Dubai, UAE
My heart goes out for Sanju baba. May god gave him all the strength to face difficult times.
kk, Pune, India
Law should treat everyone similarly. Sme people who are convicted of serious crimes(like murder, rape, ghotalla, etc) are still a Sansad. They should not be allowed to be anywhere near politics. But they are living happily. Offcourse Sanjay did do a crime by keeping the Rifle, and he should be convicted of that. But not such a rigorous one. He has suffered more than his crime. To prove that law is not partial other people who have commited more serious crimes should be given life imprisonment / life sentenced.
