Nawaz Sharif's attempt to return to his homeland to overthrow President Pervez Musharraf ended in ignominy this morning, when the former Pakistan Prime Minister was arrested, bundled onto a plane and deported to Saudi Arabia.
After seven years in exile and weeks of anticipation of his return, Mr Sharif spent just four hours on his native soil.
On arrival at Islamabad aboard a Pakistan International Airlines flight from London, he was surrounded by black-uniformed commandos then shifted to the airport’s VIP lounge, where a senior investigator from Pakistan’s anti-corruption body served an arrest warrant.
The investigator, Azhar Mahmoud Qazi, said that Mr Sharif was being held on money-laundering and corruption charges stemming from a sugar mill business several years ago. He is accused of laundering 1.2 billion rupees (£9.8 million).

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the president of Pakistan’s ruling party, said that Mr Sharif had been given a choice this morning of going into exile again or being arrested. He said that Mr Sharif had chosen detention – but it emerged soon after that he was being deported anyway.
As his followers in Pakistan clashed with police, who had set up roadblocks to prevent crowds from reaching the capital to acclaim him, Mr Sharif was quickly spirited to another plane and flown out of the country towards the Red Sea port of Jeddah, a close aide to General Musharraf confirmed.
He had intended to spend the afternoon travelling in a grand motorcade to his home and political base in Lahore, about 290 km (180 miles) to the south of Islamabad, to kick-start his campaign against General Musharraf.
Mr Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz Sharif, who stayed behind in London, said that their political party would challenge the deportation through the courts.
"This will be counted as the blackest day in Pakistan’s history," he said on Geo TV. "I do not have words to describe my grief."
Mr Sharif’s elected government was ousted by General Musharraf in a military coup in 1999, and he was exiled the following year to Saudi Arabia.
This morning's deportation appears to sideline General Musharraf's most powerful political enemy. It is likely however to deepen the President's growing unpopularity, and to reinforce public perceptions that he is an authoritarian ruler, ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections.
Last month Pakistan's Supreme Court ruled that Mr Sharif had the right to return to Pakistan and that authorities should not obstruct him.

its a media trial of the pakistani politicans that they are corrput but reality is that military dictators are more corrput . its dilema that western countries always supported our military dictators in cold war era united state supported Ayub and zia regime and now supporting dictator Musharraf . only Musharraf did not like Nawaz his arch rival but entire army junta opposed Nawaz Sharif arrival in the country . Army knew that Nawaz Sharif has Punjabi background and has potential to end army role from the Pakistani political affairs . its army in the country which penetrated in civial buracracy and huge ecnomics interest and more corrput army generals then our politicans never wants that parliament would supreme in the country and geunine democracy will restore in the country.

Boob. Corrupt little opportunist. How delightful, to see him immediately shipped right back out.

Saudi Arabia has insulted Pakistani Supreme Court, Constitution and anything that is about human rights by forcibly 'accepting' Nawas Sharif as a 'guest'.
Saudi Arabia has played part in this illegal abduction of Nawaz Sharif by International Mafia (Saad Hariri being one of them who saw the oppertunity when his father got murdered and starting blaming Syria)?
While Nawaz Sharif was in Solitary confinement, his signatures on some deal mean nothing because of Duress element.
And now these people are interfering by unprecedented press conferences on a foreign soil by Saudi (incompetent) intelligence chief, who happens to be brother of King Abdallah. This says a lot about their intelligence capabilities.

Your Asstt. Sec. of State Richard Boucher was sitting in Islamabad for the last 3 days and managing affairs with your favorite Musharraf. Also Negroponte is now due in 2 days. No country is as throughly managed, not even Iraq, by the US.

Well done to President Musharraf, a sensible decision to stop a corrupt & dis-credited politician from disrupting Pakistan.
Pakistan needs a strong leader who can control extremists & create a platform for continuing economic growth.

Mr. Sharif was willing to surrender his Army chief of staff to the Indians before he was over thrown.
I know Mr.Sharif at close quarters and can say good riddance to him and others like him; they have skimmed the country dry. They are nothing but parasites, thieves in suit and ties.
Mr. Sharif, Mrs. Benazir Bhutto and most of the so called politicians of Pakistan are not only corrupt but lack sincerity towards their country they are the real traitors. And should never be allowed to become leaders off or play any part in Pakistan's future affairs. They have amassed huge amounts of illegally acquired monies. They have never done any good to Pakistan but lined their pockets at every opportunity.
Why does the UK government allow these thieves to live here knowing their actions have radicalised the masses? For which we are all suffering now.
It is time to change UK's foreign policy and stop supporting the crooks and we might just see a change of hearts and minds.

I thing, This is the end of Musharraf.

I think Brian the reference is to our supporting yet another right wing military semidictatorship. A kneejerk reaction we would do better to overcome. Look where it has gotten us this time - bin Laden & co. believed to be hiding out in an area of Pakistan with permeable borders, and the government would fall if it were to try to deliver them up.
Hotspur, NY NY US,
It does not matter what Mushraf and currupt Pakistani army and their backers - US, UK the corrupt Suaids - do. The days of the army rule in Pakistan are, God willing, numbered. The more they fight to keep their control the harder they will all be kicked on their backside by the Pakistanies. I am very optimistic.
Rubina Gul, London, UK
it is a shame for Musharaf. His days are counted. He is the most hated person in Pakistan.
As for as Nawaz Shrif is concerned he has won the game. No body but Mush is the looser. He created confrontation of civilians and army.Pak army is working for America and is no more a national army.
Saudi Arabia has played very cotroversial role , a role for America not for Pakistan.

"In the melee, as paramilitary police in black T-shirts held him in an armlock, Mr Sharif told The Times: "I'm amazed by this fabricated case against me," repeating: "I'm amazed." He seemed lost for words."
We, in India, were amazed how these people hoodwinked and got Pakistan. From then on, they never looked back. They eliminated non-Muslims within two years by constant genocide.
Did it stop there? No. Then it was turn of Ahmediyas, Shias and so on. Sharifâs party is part of the whole amazing bunch of things Pakistan has been doing!
After ruining Pakistan, now you will all be amazed to know how the Pakistanis will ruin UK, the US and Europe! Get them in to be amazed all around at their spins, justifications, wearing of different hats as per occasions and ultimately making Pakistans!

Democracy any where in the world is not achieved in few decades but takes centuries to take its shape.Pakistan is never given a chance to experience democracy(let it be corrupt form one),this state became a victim of its geographical location, first she was a frontline state to counter Communism during Cold War and dictators like Ayub Khan and Zia ul Haq were pampered and patronized by USA and her allies. Now again Pakistan became important state in War against Terror and Pervaiz Mushrraf is a blue eyed baby of West.We simply cant blame politicians for the ills in Pakistan, where institution like army has taken over every civilian setup, any change in political setup and state is with the blessing of Pakistan army and USA.

Its shocking that ex politicians who have clearly ripped off millions of dollars from the countries wealth as well as take advantage of their position, are welcomed back by millions, same goes for Bhutto, how she can assume she should be able to broker a power deal is beyond any reasonable person.
These people should be tried and subsequently convicted and sent to prison for many years to show this kind of corruption and abuse of power will not be tolerated.
Lets hope Musharraf hangs in there an continues the good work of the last few years. Your country needs a strong leader, and luckily you pakistanis have one !!
Rapido, Kingston, London, UK
President Musharraf should learn a lesson from history. Whoever does not part from power with dignity, has to part without it. He should read the writing on the wall and respect what people of pakistan actually want , and not what a bunch of flatterers gathered around him are telling him.

The apparent arrest and force return of Mr. Sharif outside Pakistan is another vivid example of United States plan to keep her puppet in power. No wonder people of the world no longer believe in America as leader of the free world.
Ben T., Houston, Texas
The meanness of Musharaff is obvious. Behind the veneer of mild mannerism and sweet grin, Musharraf is, in fact, a spineless and vindictive man. It is an insult to call him a general. I have seen the footage on the BBC website when a government minion was reading charges against him on behalf of so called National Accountability Bureau in which he was mentioning 'money laundering'. Isn't it ridiculous that Musharraf's ally Altaf Hussain is allegedly living in London with money laundered and moreover he is the man who is directing terrorism against the people in Karachi. Musharraf has brought disgrace to the nation in resorting to throw Nawaz Sharif out of the country in clear defiance of international law and recent verdict from the Supreme Court. For how long Musharraf will continue to cling to power?

oh please, tell me how this has anything to do with the US. This was a political decision made in Pakistan, not Washington DC.

We people in the UK have just no luck. It's a sad day when a Pakistani national decides to go back to Pakistan and they will not let him in. No doubt he will end up on these shores again.

All one can do is pray that Musharraf, Shortcut Aziz and the whole military and civilian hierarchy will be hanged and then their carrion picked off while they hang. This will leave no trace of them that they ever existed.
This is the end of Pakistan. US and rebel soldiers of rouge Pakistan army have made sure it's soul dies.
Billoo Bhai, London, UK
the President of Pakistan is making too much of an agreement under which Nawaz Sharif was forced into exile. The general had also agreed with the opposition parties that he Ward dorff his uniform in 2004. It is now 2007, but he's still insists on keeping to offices at the same time. He merely said he had changed his mind. It appears he can change its mind whenever he likes, but not Nawaz Sherif. He is paranoid.
General Musharraf had violated the constitution in the first place, by staging a coup against the elected government, and now he is bent on denying Nawaz Sherif the right to challenge him

Hi,
I think Mr. Sharif has taken the right and daring step in his life. He has the right to return to his country. I saw his interview in a news channel. He is back to put Pakistan constituency and Economy back on track. He has seen that Pakistan mostly known for his terrror (since Musharraf holds the PM rights) but if you compare other asian countries, they has reached on top of the world Map. India, China are the best examples. And a true country lover cannot see his country people lagging in any prospect of life.
