Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency in Pakistan on Saturday ahead of a crucial Supreme Court decision on whether to overturn his recent election win and amid rising Islamic militant violence.
Eight Supreme Court judges immediately rejected the emergency, which suspended the current constitution. The government blocked transmissions of private news channels in several cities and telephone services in the capital, Islamabad, were cut.
"The chief of army staff has proclaimed a state of emergency and issued a provisional constitutional order," a newscaster on state Pakistan TV said, adding that Musharraf, who took power in a 1999 coup, would address the nation later today.
The state TV report gave no reason for the emergency but it follows weeks of speculation that he could take the step. Military vehicles patrolled and troops blocked roads in the administrative heart of the capital.
The US and other Western allies urged him this week not to take steps that would jeopardise the country's transition to democracy.
During previous emergencies in Pakistan, a provisional constitutional order has led to the suspension of some basic rights of citizens and for judges to take a fresh oath of office.
"This is the most condemnable act," said Ahsan Iqbal, a spokesman for the opposition PML-N party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif whom Musharraf barred from returning to Pakistan from exile in September to mount a campaign against military rule.
"The whole nation will resist this extra-constitutional measure," he said.
Private Geo TV network reported the eight judges rejected the declaration of emergency and ordered top officials, including the prime minister, and military officers not to comply with it.
Dozens of police blocked the road in front of the court building. The judges were believed to be inside. Geo reported that the army had entered the court building, but those reports could not immediately be confirmed.
The government blocked transmissions of private news channels in the capital and other cities.
Shahzad Iqbal, an official at a cable TV news provider in Islamabad said authorities were blocking transmissions of private news channels in Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi. State TV was still on the air.
"The government has done it," he said.
Residents of Karachi said their cable TV was also off the air.

About the situation I want tell that I am deeply disturbed like all Pakistanis over the ironic situation that we are facing right now. I donât know why people of Pakistan are not waking up and still pretending like life is running as usual or nothing happen which is not, thatâs only because we donât have sense, education, knowledge, courage and self respect. We are still waiting for gestures of our so called leaders that are already been sold-out.

Under the current situation of lawlessness, Taliban and al Qaida with sympathetic ISI rogue elements inside the Pakistan military, President/General Musharraf to prevent a complete terrorists take over had no other choice and martial law is in order to have law and order.
I lived and worked at the old US Embassy then in Karachi, West Pakistan 1963-1965, and have watched the Indian Subcontinent ever since. First as a young international banking officer, later as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (staff) as a reserve Colonel, USAF, and as a now retired career US Civil Servant.
Since 9/11 I have been publishing dozens of letters in both the Karachi DAWN and Peshawar FRONTIER POST advocating support by all Pakistanis of the war on terror and against Pakhtun tribal independence movements which are fellow travelers of both Taliban and al Qaida by their lack of support of the national government of Pakistan.

This is an admission of failure of Mushrraf policies and is strange situation where the dictator imposes emergency against his own rule.He has been in complete power for eight years and if there are any serious problems, then who else but Musharraf,is responsible. His government has been claiming bringing democracy and rule of law.All dictators lie about their so called successes but he has been at a much higher level in this.It is no surprise that he did this,as everyone knew that he will do anything to stay in power. He stage managed Lal Masjid afair for this but backed down on threat from US and now he created Swat situation to justify this. All for the sake of selfish rule. All dictators are bad but Musharraf is worse of the lot.Nothing surprising except maybe for USA.

This latest move by Mr. Musharraf is not going to win him any brownie points with United States, Great Britain and the EU. While it is not completely clear why he saw fit to take this particular action, it does not bode well for general stability in the region. If nothing else, it will strain US-Pakistani relations, and distract the Pakistani military to some extent, from their mission in the tribal areas. This, in turn, will further stress US assets in the region, potentially lightening up pressure on the Taliban and Al-Queda, as well as providing opportunities for other less-than-helpful players to step in and interfere with stabilization efforts. This tyrant believes he is above the law of the Pakistani people and will do anything to remain in power. The fact that the present US administration has not denounced the power grab by this dictator shows that George W. Bush is a windbag and only speaks about democracy and does not truly believe in democracy.
The world should be outraged at this power grab by this little two bit dictator. I ask all that are outraged by this latest corrupt move by Musharraf to boycot anything and everything that has a made in Pakastan label on it!

This act of Musharraf is shameful and rightly expected from a shameless man. It is going to be the last nail in his coffin. Those self proclaimed politicians siding Musharraf are fair weather friends. We will certainly resist this act. Pakistanis are in the crutches of Military voltures. But we are not going to tolerate them in this country.

Power corrupts! I cant believe this ridiculous man has actually done the unthinkable. Will Pakistan ever be able to have a democracy? I wish the people would stand for whats right. Until they want to fight for their rights, they won't value them enough to prevent this abuse.

Gen Musharraf is certainly doing the right thing. Democracy should not be imposed but should come through natural progression. Pakistan is not in a stable state, hence the Emergency being imposed. Long live the General!
Mushtaq, Halifax, UK, Yorkshire
This is another huge mistake Musharaf made to legitimate himself. This so-called emergency has nothing to do with curtail extremism or promote democracy. It is all about to legitimate his position by illegitimate ways. Itâs an obvious and clear message to the nation that Musharaf does not want any institution to be autonomous against him. He wishes to be a solely power to run the state affairs and indeed thatâs too will go against him in an intense resistance resulting internal strife and bad agitation.
Mishee, Islamabad, Pakistan
Its upsetting to see that the blue eyed baby (Musharaf The Dictator) of the west is walking all over the Constitution of Pakistan.....Welcome Democracy!!!!
The West is going to slap him on his wrist for is imposition of Emergency and then wink to continue in fulfuling their (Western) interests...
Only God Knows who is sincere with Pakistan!!!!
Zarak Khan, Islamabad,
Until such time that world politics will interfere with national politics, there is no light at the end of tunnel for countries to mature.
All the main political Pakistani figures should have disappeared long ago, but thanks to outside interference they managed to remain in comanding positions only to further their own political agendas with total disregard for the needs of their fellow citizens.
Tom Ochrymowicz, Massignano (AP), Italy
This is the best outcome for Pakistant - the nation. An donly General Musharaff understands this. Thieves, gangsters and looters the likes of Nawaz Sharif and Benaazzr Bhutto should the first to be shot and hanged ublictly to show that Pakistan will no longer be ruled by these despots whose only interest if to line their own pockets. Pakistan Zaindabad. Musharraf Zindabad.
Aziz Miah, London, UK
You got to say that Musharaf has done well to get every last penny out of the Americans now you see his true colour. I don't whether to say Musharaf has been clever or American's have been dum. Just to sweeten up American's he may catch Bin Laden.
Satish Parmar, Harpenden, England
And this is a US ally ... you can see politics has little to do with human rights, terrorism or corruption, although the US likes to talk about these issues in a big way.
If this was Iraq or Iran George B would have made several statements of condemnation by now.

Dream on just like Gen Musharraf "war on terror"!

Why do people tolerate military dictatorships? By definition, a dictatorship is not an inherently legitimate form of government.
