Moments before Benazir Bhutto was assassinated today, she poignantly spoke of how her father was executed, and of the deaths of other members of her family. Now she too has become a victim.
With her kiilling Pakistan has been plunged into political instability at a moment when Mrs Bhutto was probably the most powerful political figure in the country.
The latest we have heard is that she was shot as she got into her car at the end of her political rally, hit in the neck and chest by attackers who were on a motorbike, and who then detonated explosives. She apparently died of her wounds as she arrived at hospital.
The immediate reaction in Pakistan to the killing is one of anger against the government – anger from her own political party that the intelligence agencies failed to protect her, and anger from the ordinary people who supported her, who believe that the Government may even have had a hand in her death.
Violence has already erupted in various parts of the country, particularly in Karachi and the province of Sind, which was her home. There has been gunfire in many places. The roads are blocked and several vehicles have been set on fire by angry crowds.
Ms Bhutto's supporters among the ordinary people are blaming President Musharraf. They say that the intelligence agencies could have been involved in the killing in a bid to eliminate her from the political scene as a dangerous rival.
Ms Bhutto had herself accused the intelligence agencies in the past of conspiring with the Islamic militants who have repeatedly threatened to kill her.
Her party is blaming the government for failing to protect her. They say that she was a target from the moment she arrived in Pakistan, that the Government had been given warning that she was a target, but yet she was allowed to go ahead with her rally today, when last month they had placed her under house arrest to prevent her from holding a rally in exactly the same place where today's killing occurred.
It is too early to say where this is going to lead. At this stage I do not think that civil war is likely.
One thing is certain – this has completely changed the political landscape of Pakistan politics. We will see a growing anti-Musharraf, anti-Government sentiment developing in the country.
Mr Musharraf has yet to react to the killing. If the situation worsens I would not be surprised to see the state of emergency, that was lifted on December 12, reimposed on Pakistan.

Benazir's father helped create Pakistan and was hanged by his people. And now people in Pakistan destroyed her daughter and the mere hope of democracy.
The attacker who was willing to be burnt by "hell-fire" may be sending the greatest protest to Allah against human injustice.

mr musharraf and his government should know exactly how ms bhuttot would be killed, the hour ,the day ,and the site.
mr musharraf is a dictator that have supported by many important nations ,and presidents of the world.,and we all know their names.
the moral of today politicts are the same - HAVING POWER AND FORCE THEIR ACTIONS BASED ONLY MONEY AND ARMS THESE ARE THE TOOLS OF THE TODAYS SUPPOSED DEMOCRACY.

Please get your facts straight. All videos show Benazir getting into her bullet proof vehicle and departing the rally venue. What happened just after is open for debate. On departure, reports state that Benazir stood in the vehicle, using the sunroof, to wave to the public. That is when she was shot twice and the killer set off the bomb as well. It is not clear whether her death was from bullet wounds or shrapnel from the bomb. What is clear that she was not killed as she got into her car.

It's just like the assassination of JFK - silently and stealthily the normal tight curtain of security swings aside - and lo and behold! an Oswald is there at just the right time to take advantage of it!
In Pakistan the conspirators had the advantage that they didn't need a Jack Ruby - the local Oswalds are stupid enough to eliminate themselves and don't need bumping off by a third party...

We as a nation owe a lot to this family who has sacrificed their lives for betterment of this country and for restoration of democracy. Despite few political differences with her i am extremely sadden and in a state of shock because I have supported this party from the time i had political sense. Benazir Bhutto daughter of courageous Zulfiqar ali bhutto and a good leader. It is the gloomiest day in the history of this country. Peace be on her.

At 4:00 p.m. Pakistan standard time, I left for Karachi from Lahore and the moment i landed here, i was getting calls from all those concerned with my life and with the state of our beloved country. i had to take another flight from here, perhaps that is the reason i am safe and sound, writing down this email from the lounge area of the airport. while i was boarding to the next flight, people tried to walk inside the international flight area.. someone was firing outside the airport and trying to kill innocent people.
If an airport is not safe, a departure lounge is not safe, how come government has any excuse to blame it on the dog?
Being totally unpolitical and least interested in all parties, i still feel, very much hurt and dejected.
